White Shell Water Place, An Anthology of Native American Reflections on the 400th Anniversary of the Founding of Santa Fe, New MexicoBy

This anthology, a companion to the Santa Fe 400th Anniversary Commemoration publication, All Trails Lead to Santa Fe, affords Native American authors the opportunity to unreservedly express their ideas, opinions and perspectives on the historical and cultural aspects of Santa Fe using their own voice and preferred writing styles that are not necessarily in accord with western academic and writing conventions. One cannot truly contemplate the history and culture of Santa Fe without the voices of the Native Americans--the original inhabitants of Po'oge, ''White Shell Water Place.'' Indeed, much of Santa Fe's story is conveyed from a western colonial perspective, which, until fairly recently, has predominantly relegated Native Americans to the fringes. However, over the last thirty years colonial narratives regarding Native American history and culture have been, and continue to be, disputed and amended as the pursuit of academic, intellectual and cultural self determination gains momentum in respective Native American tribal and academic communities. The Santa Fe 400th Anniversary Commemoration has created an opportunity for the Native American voice to be heard. This anthology is a ceremony of Native voices, a gathering of Native people offering scholarly dialogue, personal points of view, opinions, and stories regarding the pre and post-historical and cultural foundations of Santa Fe.

The Real History of Santa Fe
By JGghost
"White Shell Water Place" is a comprehensive overview of the history of the Indigenous people of Santa Fe and the surrounding Pueblos. It is the true story told by Native people who know it, not by mainstream historians or scholars who "think" they know it. Read Dr. Gregory Cajete (Santa Clara Pueblo) on the the Pueblo perspective of Santa Fe, Diane Reyna (Taos/Ohkay Owingeh Pueblos) and her discussion of "crossing the tracks", Dr. Herman Ogoyo (Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo) telling the truth of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, an enlightening, albeit disturbing, overview of the truth behind the 'genizaros', slavery and the mixed-races of New Mexico from Dr. Ramon Gutierrez (Laguna/Zuni ancestry), and the moving introductory Blessing written by the noted Kiowa author N. Scott Momaday, who has lived in and around the New Mexico Pueblo communities for over 60 years. Storytelling is the basis for education and language preservation in traditional societies, and this anthology is superbly edited to capture the essence of Pueblo life from a relatively peaceful pre-contact period (pre-1540) to 21st century survival, and should be read to our children, Native or not. The editor, historian F. Richard Sanchez (Isleta Pueblo ancestry) wove these chapters together to make the truth of Santa Fe history come alive with documented history, personal stories, and the memories of the pain of colonization. This book has received the well-deserved award from the New Mexico Historical Society, The Gaspar Pérez de Villagrá Award-- for an outstanding publication by an individual or individuals (articles, monographs, books, etc). All proceeds of the sale of this book go to the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, so buy it, not only to enhance your understanding of the New Mexico Pueblo Indians, but to support the education of American Indian students at IAIA. Teachers, use this in your classes; tourists, read it before you visit our fair city; everyone, please read this book! All of us, and you, will benefit.

A nice sampling of Native viewpoints
By Peter D. Tillman
This book is made up of ten essays, mostly by Pueblo people whose ancestors were living here when the Spanish arrived in 1540, seeking Cibola, the "seven cities of gold." Tewa scholar Alfonso Ortiz describes the Coronado expedition as a "rampage of death, deceit and destruction," and relations between the Spanish and the Pueblos didn't improve much until after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the only successful Native revolt against their European conquerors in what's now the United States.

It's said that history is written by the winners, but it's fascinating to read history from the viewpoint of the "losing" side -- although, after 470-some years of European contact, almost all of the old families are some mix of American Indian, Spanish, Anglo and Mexican Indian blood. I found the history of the Genizaros, detribalized Indians who were once household slaves of the Spanish settlers, queasily fascinating. And the series of vignettes by Carol Harvey, daughter of a Navajo father and a Nuevomexicana mother, of growing up in Santa Fe, was one of the high points of the book. The ten essays vary in quality & writing style, but I enjoyed all but one. Recommended for anyone interested in the history of Northern New Mexico.

"White Shell Water Place" is a translation of Ogha Po'oge, a Tewa name for Santa Fe.

I've put a link to Editor Richard Sanchez's introduction, and a sample of the book at Google Books in the comments, as Amazon won't allow links in the body of the review.

Happy reading--

The Pueblo Indian point of view on the Re-Conquest of Santa Fe, which was far from "Bloodless" as Santa Fe's current Fiestas say
By Stephen Fox
This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of New Mexico. The 19 Indian Pueblos of the state still exert a strong gravitational pull on New Mexico and the entire Four Corners region for those who care to listen, witness, and absorb their cultural gifts to the public. The beautiful drive up I-25 from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, then 285 up to Taos, would have been lined with development had it not been for the Tiwa, Keresan, and Tewa Pueblos of the Rio Grande valley. "White Shell Water Place", written by Pueblo scholars, completes the history of this beautiful mountain state capital with the perspective of those who united, for the first time, to drive the Spanish out in 1680, and who are still united today despite the efforts of the Spanish and later the Americans to stamp out their religion, worldview and ways of life.
