In 1835, a petition for land far from Santa Fe, New Mexico was awarded to "pobladores" (settlers) willing to relocate to the eastern edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Founded along the Gallinas River, the settlement became the Las Vegas Land Grant. The history of this grant is the history of New Mexico. On this 496,000 acre community grant, beliefs about land and faith were intertwined within a system of shared sacredness. In the 1890s, Anglo-American merchants and cattlemen joined with Hispano elites in the first concerted effort to wrest control of this grant from its original owners and heirs. The heart of this book investigates how a rural "nuevo-mexicano" (New Mexican) movement on the Las Vegas Land Grant evolved from burning barns and cutting fences to political activism and success at the ballot box. It also examines the history of New Mexico land grants, Hispano mountain culture, the origination of the town footprint, the boom of Territorial Las Vegas, and the cultural diversity that existed within the two distinct towns that emerged when the railroad came to Las Vegas in 1879. "Honor and Defiance" details the impact of American expansion into a well-established Hispano urban center, and highlights the robust nature of "nuevo-mexicano" spirit, determination, and ingenuity on the Las Vegas Land Grant. The book also includes photographss of Las Vegas, leaders of the period, and the land the land they fought for. JAMES BAILEY BLACKSHEAR received his master's degree in history from Texas A&M and his PhD in history from the University of North Texas. He has won awards for his literary essays, and has been published by the "New Mexico Historical Review" and the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series. He has spoken about the Las Vegas Land Grant at history conferences in both Colorado and Texas.

The history of the Las Vegas Land Grant, a settlement along the Gallinas River founded in 1835, is a convoluted one because of the many paths that crossed here. The author identifies with the evolution of a Hispano mountain culture that was based on a feudal system, but determined to survive through faith, ingenuity and communal values. Blackshear captures the essence of the times with: ''Serenity and danger seemed intertwined, different coils of the same knot, pulled together by a variety of competing senses and priorities.'' Territorial Las Vegas was transformed by the coming of the railroad and an ever-expanding population of Easterners while the bison that the Comanches depended on grew scarce. Though Blackshear champions the underdog, he also shows how the violent acts of the disenfranchised evolved through barn burning and fence cutting to political activism and success at the ballot box. James Bailey Blackshear received his master's degree in history from Texas A&M and his PhD in history from the University of North Texas. He has won awards for his literary essays, and has been published by the New Mexico Historical Review and the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. I absolutely loved this book

.I absolutely loved this book! It gives a vivid description of life on the Las Vegas Land Grant from before its inception showing the influence of the Native American Indians, the settlement of the Land Grant by Mountain Hispanos and the invasion of American Anglos and how the Land Grant. IT is like being in an old Western Movie in which you don't when they are going to catch the "bad" guy. There is always suspense even though the story is real. Anyone who loves the history of the Southwest and that of New Mexico will love this book. It is well written with many colorful passages that make you want to keep on reading.

A Must Read for Anyone With Roots in Northern New Mexico

This book is a must for anyone researching genealogy related to San Miguel County, New Mexico. It is an engaging story of a period in New Mexico history that has been widely forgotten even amongst New Mexicans until now. Blackshear examines this chronology as it culminates into an insurgent war at the end of the 1800s, fueled by American westward expansion, political cronyism, greed, and a misunderstood culture of Nuevo Mexicanos that ultimately rebels against efforts to remove them from their ancestral lands. Highly recommended!
