On March 9, 1878, three men were murdered in isolated Blackwater Canyon in New Mexico. The suspects were Billy the Kid and a number of his Regulators. This action, almost assuredly taken in retaliation for the death of the Kid's friend, John Henry Tunstall, became the real catalyst in the Lincoln County War. In 2006, the author and a team of investigators searched for the remains of the men and related artifacts in the obscure canyon--the first to do so since the murders. The murders were reconstructed with the discovery of over thirty bullet cartridges. As part of the reconstruction of the crime, the author widens the scope of his investigation by examining the lives and paths of all three victims: William S. ''Buck'' Morton, a Virginian fleeing from his past; Frank Baker, a mystery man who hid his real name and shady career; and William McCloskey, an elderly cowboy who unsuccessfully attempted to play the peacemaker. The myths and accounts of the three men and their murders are analytically separated. Connective events where the paths of the participants intersected, such as the death of John Tunstall, are likewise examined. Legend and fact are separated in the case and its participants--both victims and suspects. Billy the Kid is justly portrayed as a human being wrought by conflicts. The Regulators and their opposition reveal character both good and bad. An investigative approach to this portion of the Billy the Kid saga corrects the record on some old assumptions and creates new avenues of insight and possibility.

Good read; hoped to learn more, however.
By K. Etling
This is an excellent book, but it could have been even better. We learn all about the history of the Blackwater Draw incident, including what the author has been able to cobble together of the backgrounds of the three victims. We also find out what those who were present when the killings took place later said about the incident, and also what friends and acquaintances of the victims, the other participants and the people who buried the bodies later said. More importantly, we also learn how many cartridge cases were discovered and what caliber guns they were shot from or probably shot from, BUT the one thing I would have liked to learn was WHERE in the canyon each group of spent cartridges was discovered. There are several groupings, but how far from each other were they? That would have been most helpful to learn. Also, the author and a team of researchers searched for the bodies of those killed near some tombstone-looking rocks on a ridge near the site where the cartridge cases were found, but the victims (Morton and Baker) supposedly ran to that spot from somewhere in the bottom of the draw. I would have been interested in finding out whether any search for a body was done in the bottom of the draw where, as it seems likely, one victim (McCloskey) was shot and killed. A diagram illustrating the placement of the various shell groupings would have been extremely helpful. Still, the author has to be given his due for researching this small but incredibly important facet of the Lincoln County War and Billy the Kid's participation in the event.

Good Lincoln County War History
By amazon customer
I enjoyed this book because of the history of the Lincoln County War. If you collect Billy the Kid, you must have this book. It reveals a few new facts about the war in 1878, particularly the early history of Buck Morton. Much is supposition, but I also enjoyed considering that, as well. Its biggest drawback is the author's premise that this incident started the Lincoln County War, which is absolutely wrong. Otherwise, I would have given the book a higher rating. It seemed obvious that the author did not reveal the location of the murders to prevent others from finding the site and metal-detecting. I have no problem with that. But Mr. Turk does seem to promote and protect Buck Morton, who murdered John Tunstall, and lied about Tunstall pulling a gun and firing at a twenty-man posse riding down on him. Still, a very good read about a key incident in the Lincoln County War.

Disappointing
By Jeff M. Schwehn
I have to give Mr. Turk credit for having produced the first book of which I'm aware that's solely focused on the capture and deaths of "Buck" Morton, "Frank Baker" and William McCloskey during New Mexico's Lincoln County War. He quickly asserts that their demise sparked the entire War. Not only does his book not prove his assertion, he barely refers to it again after his introductory section. The hundred or so pages that follow are replete with unsupported supposition, speculation, selective use of biased sources and bit of information about Morgan that does nothing to advance the author's argument. The entire volume needs a thorough re-editing from text to footnotes to photographs. Mr. Turk's organized search of Blackwater Draw some 125 years after the killings yields groups of unsubstantiated artifacts that ignite an imaginative reinterpretation of the deadly event that he maintains kindled the Lincoln County War. After reading Mr. Turk's book, the mystery surrounding the slayings in Blackwater Draw remains as murky as before. Draw you own conclusion.
