Santa Fe Bohemia (Softcover), by Eli Levin

By the early 1970s, an active bohemian colony had developed in Santa Fe and it became a cultural boom town. The number of art galleries went from two to a hundred. Besides the Santa Fe Opera, there came into being endless festivals: for art, music, literature, theater, movies, fashion, and the crafts of Indians and Spanish Americans. The city's complex heritage of three interlocked cultures became "Santa Fe Style." But the fifteen years between 1964 and 1980 held a special magic. And Eli Levin experienced it all: the fading generation of older artists and the newly arriving younger generation; wild night life at Claude's Bar; artist's battles with conservative arts organizations; questionable successes and tragic failure of careers; exemplary examples of lifetime dedication; and a number of suppressed scandals, one even involving possible murders. Packed with amusing anecdotes about the various artists with whom Levin painted, plotted and partied, this vivid memoir testifies to the exciting rebirth and burgeoning growth of one of this country's most well known art colonies. Eli Levin, the son of novelist Meyer Levin, is known for his paintings of Santa Fe night life. He has run art galleries, written art reviews and taught art history. He hosts two artist's gatherings, a drawing group since 1969 and the Santa Fe Etching Club since 1980. Levin studied painting with Raphael Soyer, George Grosz and Robert Beverly Hale, among others, and has Master's degrees from Wisconsin University and St. John's College.

A Review of Eli Levin's Santa Fe Bohemia
By Catherine Bibb
While Eli Levin's book "Santa Fe Bohemia" covered a very important time period in the Santa Fe's artistic formation, he ultimately did himself and those he wrote about an injustice. The sarcastic and bitter tone of his narrative was unflattering and only proved he was jealous of his fellow artist's successes. He also characterized many of his fellow artists in a misleading manner and did not include any of their opinions on events in which they participated. The book would have been greatly improved by interviews by fellow artists and people that knew them. There seemed to be a sense of indecision about whether he should focus on himself and his art or the group of artists. This was signaled by the choice of his own art for the cover of the book and the placement of himself as the first artist in the book. Obviously a more objective viewpoint would have done justice to the great events that took place in the lives of this group of Santa Fe artists. The book also suffered from weak sentence structure and an inability to engage the reader. The author seems aware of the outrage his book will cause to those he has portrayed. He is hoping to become famous through the creation of a controversial piece of literature, yet his book falls short of the revered designation of literature.

Huh?
By BC
I was growing up in Santa Fe during a lot of the years covered in this book and know a lot of the folks mentioned in it. Yes, it is always good to have more information, but there are quite a few faults. First off, the writing just is not great. That would be forgivable if the information were good. But so much of it just seems way off the mark. He talks about artists without really seeming to understand exactly where they were coming from, spends too much attention on minor figures and completely ignores important people and events of the time, possibly because he simply was not hip to any of it.

entertaining
By Nolan Winkler
Eli Levin's book on Santa Fe during those years is written plainly, which is rather a delight. It is the author's view of what went on, pretty straightforward. I found it an enjoyable read. Just one man's opinion.... Take some, leave some. I also find visual artists do not have an easy time 'getting' others' work, so don't expect it. I know a few of the artists and cannot think they'd mind what Mr. Levin had to say. A commentary not especially on the time, but on the author's time. Enjoyed it.
