Parsing of Gallic Wars Book 1 - A Booster to Learning on Own
By Amazon Customer
The few pages that are available to scan in the preview of this 2006 paperback printing of 1898 parsing by James B. Finch of Caesar's Gallic Wars Book I (only), accurately represent the nature of the entire content. This book is a relief for the self-teaching student like me who seeks to read more with less pain of look up and re-lookup through the very slow process of parsing each word and its exact impact on the sentence. Learning this interesting but dead language requires of course to read, read, and read more. But in the learning process, in the absence of an instructor, there are few paths that allow for a managed level of progression and pain once moving into the classic sources, which are wrought with moments of a complete loss on how to decipher sentences when usually just one little piece of knowledge of idiom or syntax, omission, or deceptively similar word is missing, usually key to unraveling the entire passage - and costing hours upon hours of unnecessary frustration.

The text books that use Caesar as a basis, fall far short in their notes to aid in deciphering passages, especially the numerous idioms. Even the otherwise good Jenney series (i.e., Second Year Latin) includes notes that more often than not ignore idioms and generally assumes, understandably, that there is an instructor available. (Note: Gallic Wars is abridged and simplified in Jenney.) Interlinear translations alone are helpful along these lines, but still leave too many mysteries as to the translation is what it is throughout.

The very process which this book displays is the same process that a student must go through. It has an interlinear translation, but it is in original word order, and it adds careful dissection/parsing, and leaves no stone unturned as it breaks down each and every word in order of its appearance, its principal parts, its form, its key relationship in the sentence, and with additional language context that provides a more solid basis for the meaning, including omissions and idioms, with literal to smoother contextually-tuned meaning.

One not so small annoyance, and thus the reduction in rating, is that the references to the Allen & Greenough (A Latin Grammar - Revised Ed.) and the Harkness grammars, are made without specific years and are not the versions that I do have (A&G's New Latin Grammar 1903 and Harkness's 1898) nor that I can find of Allen and Greenough anywhere precisely, which greatly slows the much intended and desired cross-use.

I will continue to use other texts in my progression, but with this book (and similar parsing works), I feel that I have that missing teacher that I can pulse to facilitate those occasions of exasperation from the inability to explain a certain phrase or word in a sentence.

It does seem pricey given the subject material and that it was written in 1898 and may be available in alternate form, but the work here is consistently meticulous and the print, paperback binding, and paper quality are good. If you are committed to the task at hand of translating and thoroughly learning this piece of work on the path to learning the language, it is worth the investment, even if you already have an interlinear-only version.

Update/Edit: The A&G grammar that is referenced in this work is from a long out of print and earlier work by Allen and Greenough, titled A Latin Grammar: Founded on Comparative Grammar, Revised Edition, 1877, primary author Joseph Henry Allen, but both noted inside. Complete revived prints of this text have become available, but take care in selecting for completeness; most in the public domain are missing paras. 132-156 (out of 384 paras. plus Glossary, Appendix, and Index). (1881 Ed. likely still suitable for use with the parsed Caesar, but not verified.)

Like Having a Professor in the Room
By L. Saltern
The full text of Caesar's De Bello Gallico Book 1 is included with all the macrons marked. Under each word is an individual English translation that tries to take the cases and tenses into account. If you're not sure what case or tense a word is in--or better yet--if you don't know WHY it is in that case or tense, just look at the bottom of the page and it will tell you. For every single word. If you've got all the words, but the meaning of the sentence as a whole is still puzzling, there's an English translation of the passage just to the side.

Someone with a fairly good grasp of Latin will go through this book rather quickly. There's no reason to read all the explanations of word forms and usages (which takes up about 80% of each page). Just try to read the Latin and refer to the explanations when you have a specific question about what you've read. You'll get the benefit of reading and fully understanding the original Latin, and the next time you read it, you probably won't need the translations or explanations again.

Someone completely new to Latin could in theory use this book to learn from scratch, but it's going to be a rough battle. I'd recommend staying with beginner's material at least until you have a general idea of what all the language forms are, and what they're used for. Pay special attention to subjunctive verbs and indirect speech, which you'll find here in great supply. Then you'll be ready for this book.

Nicely reproduced copy of the publicly available (and free) digital scan of the original. Typical of these kinds of reprints, the cover isn't the nicest, but the paper is actually better than others I've found.

Even in the most civilized countries, there is still a reluctance to accept strangers into small communities. Another Damn Newcomer tells the story of a couple moving to a tiny town where the wife is eventually elected as mayor, but is despised by the other governing body members. One would think that being the mayor of a small town would enable you to make changes that would benefit both the town and the residents. Not so if the village councilors don't like you. During this time, the county had to contend with the environmental issues of the spotted owl and reintroduction of the wolf. Despite the problems encountered, the book is full of laughter and the delight of living. Enjoy the funny story of a middle-aged couple moving to an isolated New Mexico village where they find friends, love, opportunities and challenges--but never, ever total acceptance.

About the Author
Audrie Clifford was born in California, grew up in Colorado, spent several years in Arizona but loves New Mexico most of all. ''We are the state without pretense,'' she says. ''Many of our beautiful homes and buildings are actually made of mud. We eat a lot of beans and chili, and delight in our gorgeous blue sky. How much more real can it get?''

Hits the nail on the head
By New Mexico Reader
Ms. Clifford knows of what she writes. Having worked in this part of western New Mexico intermittently for many years, I can say she hits it bang on within every page of her delightful book. She recognizes all aspects of small town community life, the good, the bad, the funny, the grim, the beautiful, and the sometimes downright ugly truth.

She chronicles the strange irony of having to put up with closed mindedness in such an expansive landscape, but that there can still be generosity, friendship, and hope despite it all. That sometimes it just takes time, but twenty years may not be long enough to overcome the label of "newcomer", even if you somehow manage to become mayor of the place.

Read it and you will not be disappointed!

Interesting insight into heart
By Jean Cottrell
I found this book to be fascinating. It is about everyday people - everyday lives - warts and all; raising children, friendships that come and go, losses of people and animals that have left permanent scars in our memories . A striking picture of New Mexico, a look into the lives of a people of a particular area, including the sounds and smells of the beautiful , quaint land that only a certain type of human being can appreciate and love.
Interesting critiques of small town government, and at the same time saying something about all of us, illuminating our human flaws.

Great Book
By Karla K Moore
What a wonderful book that tells it like it is living in a small town in the Southwest. Audrey's writing is very down to earth and honest which makes for a delightful read. Her stories make one feel like you are actually there and you either love or hate the characters of the town and surrounding areas. Don't miss reading this book by a good writer!!

Billy the Kid Rides Again, by Jay Miller

In early 2003, three sheriffs set out to prove that Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid, thereby also proving that Brushy Bill of Hico, Texas was not the real Kid. Along their way, the sheriffs enlisted New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson's support and took two communities on a wild ride through court battles to dig up Billy and his mother. Governor Richardson found an attorney willing to work free and provide Billy with a voice. Follow 'Billy' as he speaks for himself in court, requesting that he and his mother be dug up to examine the DNA in their dusty remains for evidence that they were related. And follow the small towns of Fort Sumner and Silver City, New Mexico as they fight to retain the integrity of their municipal cemeteries and keep the legend of Billy the Kid from crumbling away. Author Jay Miller followed the strange unfolding of events, digging to find the source of the money that financed an official murder investigation and the court action against two courageous small towns struggling to prevent the exhumations.

From the Author
"Anyone interested in learning about New Mexico should first check with Jay Miller. This collection of Jay’s columns is the first in a series of books about New Mexico history and current events. It’s a must read." --Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico

About the Author
JAY MILLER grew up in Billy the Kid Country, listening to yarns about Billy, some true, some not. As a syndicated newspaper columnist, Miller has written often about Billy and the Lincoln County War and has used a collection of those columns to weave a riveting story of just what happened when Billy rode again.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
My interest in Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett began at an early age when my grandmothers, Laura Smith Miller and Annis Ford Meyer, of Las Cruces, New Mexico told me stories of Billy and Pat. They both were friendly with the Garrett family, who lived just down the street from the Meyers. And the Garrett family plot lies close to the Millers’ in the Las Cruces Masonic Cemetery.

Thus my fascination with this chapter in the lives of both men. As I wrote about the exciting events, I realized I was going to need the help of experts to answer questions I had about the way this story was unfolding. My friend Dave Clary, a Roswell historian with expertise in what seems like everything, led me to Robert Utley in Texas, and soon I made contact with Frederick Nolan in England and Leon Metz in El Paso.

Blessed with these contacts with the premier Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett and Lincoln County War scholars in the world, I was able to attack the impressive-looking Probable Cause Statement from the district court filing for Catherine Antrim’s exhumation in Silver City. Their analysis meant my suspicions were confirmed that there was more to this case than met the eye.

I then began an effort to determine what public money was being spent on this case and how it was being spent. My thanks go to Robert Johnson of the Foundation for Open Government for his help in guiding me through the quest. Thank you also to De Baca County Clerk Nancy Sparks for her quick and helpful responses.

When I bogged down in the forensics of finding DNA, blood and bullet holes, I received willing assistance from some of the most respected forensic scientists in the nation, among them Tom Mauriello, Brian Wraxall, Dr. Clyde Snow and Dr. Edward Blake.

Indescribable help came from Dr. Gale Cooper, a Harvard-trained M.D. psychiatrist and amateur historian for her insights into the motivations of the players in this game.

Also helpful in providing background information were Fort Sumner Mayor Raymond Lopez, Lincoln County Commissioner Leo Martinez, Marilyn Bolin, Rose Barton and Trish Saunders.

For the photographs in this book, I am indebted to Robert McCubbin, Bob Boze Bell and Joe Micalizzi.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has been supportive of this effort and of my future plans for several additional books designed to promote New Mexico and New Mexicans. He realizes I was pretty tough on him in this collection of columns for staying on the grave-digging kick much longer than I thought he should. He maintains, however, that his only interest in Billy is to promote New Mexico.

This book would not have been possible without the three sheriffs, the villains of the story. It also wouldn’t have been needed, because they’re the ones who caused all the commotion. I know they thought my investigation was unnecessary. We may never know what caused them to pull out of the Fort Sumner court hearing, but I figure my attempt to shed more light on the subject may have had something to do with it. To the extent their efforts end up aiding tourism in Billy the Kid Country, I applaud them.

Since this is the first of what I hope to be many books that will pull together some of my 6,000 columns on several subjects that have been of special interest to me, I want to thank the patient editors and publishers who helped guide me through the early years of this my second career and one for which I had no formal training. For whatever writing skills I might possess, I have only to thank my Deming Junior High English teacher, Joe Stell, now a state representative from Carlsbad and Stella Vaughan, my high school English teacher in Silver City. I have always wanted to thank them. Since this now sounds suspiciously like an Oscar acceptance speech, I will mercifully end. --Jay Miller

Facts vs factoids
By That Englishman
My research into Billy the Kid's life and career began in 1952 -- so I have been seeking the truth about him longer than many of the individuals who are participating in this discussion have been alive. That alone, I believe, entitles me to voice my opinions here. My mentors were Maurice Garland Fulton, William A. Keleher, Philip J. Rasch and Robert N. Mullin and their byword was integrity, a quality conspicuously lacking in some of "reviews" presently appearing at this site. If the investigation launched by ex-Sheriff Sullivan and his deputy has any integrity at all then Jay Miller surely has an equal right to question it. The burden of proof is incumbent upon all those who seek to overturn accepted historical fact and it is because Mr. Miller's brave little book highlights the continuing lack of any such proof, not to mention the constantly-changing positions of both playing field levels and the goalposts that he has become the target for such abuse. Mr. Miller documents and (rightly) criticizes those aspects of the case that substitute hubris for honesty, Billingsgate and blatherskite -- badmouthing and ballyhoo to you -- for bona-fide research. He has -- all of us have -- an inalienable right to question the actions of those in office if we believe those actions to be counter to the public good. This is as true for presidents as it is for sheriffs and that is why I believe Mr. Miller has done a much-needed good deed in a very murky world

AN OUTSTANDING REFUTATION OF TRASHISTORY AND PSEUDOSCIENCE
By David A. Clary
This is a most remarkable, provocative, and informative book--and also an unusual one. Why? Because in a time when we are inundated with nonsense posing as history and science, it follows the trail of one remarkable journalist in his quest to sort fact from the baloney, and in the process revealed a trail of official dishonesty, manipulation of fact (or more often, substitution of unsupported allegation for established fact), and even financial irregularities among elected public officials--all in an insane campaign to dig up the graves of persons long buried. The public, legal and historical, record has long since established that Pat Garrett shot Billy the Kid to death in the performance of his duties in 1881. In keeping with American tradition, however, in the 20th century a few old gaffers presented themselves as the "real" Billy, with elaborate, conspiratorial explanations of how they escaped shooting way back when. There were several of them, as there were others claiming to be the "real" Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, and what have you. Yet no facts lay behind these unsupported allegations, a detail that has not deterred each of them from suckering a few gullible believers into buying his story. When two--later joined by a third--New Mexico sheriffs decided to rewrite history, by seeking to dig up Billy's grave and that of his mother (in the common but ignorant belief that their DNA, if it could be found, would tell the "real" tale by magical incantation), the abuse of two communities' historic sites, the trampling of established fact, and as it turned out the misuse of taxpayers' funds and resources seemed likely to march forward to its absurd conclusion--until Jay Miller began to look into the affair. He systematically demolished the case for reopening a crime long since settled, for establishing "probable cause" to believe that nonexistent evidence would be found for a crime for which there was no probable cause to believe ever happened. This, then, is a modern, documentary history of a successful campaign to let Truth triumph over tabloid-style trashistory and pseudoscience. The taxpayers of New Mexico are grateful to Jay Miller. But the emotions this engendered are apparent in the preceding review, which dodges the merit of the book to smear the character of its author. To anyone who has had his fill of the false history and specious science that fills the supermarket fishwrappers and the cable TV airwaves, this book is highly recommended as an example of how fact, in the right hands, can put baloney in its place.

A Welcome Antidote to Snake Oil
By Trish Saunders
To me, one of the most interesting aspects of 19th century Western history is the flim flam man, the con who made his living by foisting fake 'cures' and other swindles upon a credible public eager to sample every new little thing.

I'm always reminded of this snake-oil aspect of western history when I read about another attempt to dig up Billy the Kid's remains from the old cemetery at Fort Sumner. Simply to "disprove" a phony mystery--that Billy the Kid somehow escaped and lived to be an old man--a vocal minority persists in trying to re-write history. Apparently, they don't care that attempts to dig up Billy the Kid have caused great anguish to Fort Sumner residents, who understandably revere their old cemetery, and don't wish to see it become a circus side show.

Jay Miller deserves great credit for writing a series of columns decrying the flim flammery of digging up Billy the Kid. Undeterred by vicious name-calling, Jay persisted in pointing out the real harm in distorting history, and ruining one of the most iconic images of the old West: the gravestone of the West's most famous outlaw. Fortunately, Jay's tough. He's also a hell of a good writer.

I loved his book, and passed it on to friends. I recommend it highly.

A Handbook of Latin Literature: From the Earliest Times to the Death of St. Augustine, by H. J. Rose, E. Courtney

A Handbook of Latin Literature (reprint of the 1954 edition) is a concise, yet comprehensive survey of Latin literature that provides brief biographical information about ancient authors from the earliest to the Christian and pagan writers, analyses of the most prominent works, and the historical and cultural context. It also places the works alongside their contemporaries, rates their relative importance in their own times and later periods, and explores their influence on subsequent literatures and Western Civilization. Each known work is discussed and analyzed in terms of content, chronology, genre, significance, meaning, genetic relationship to other works, and ancient and modern scholarship.

Comprehensive Reference
By A Customer
Having studied Latin all throughout high school, I was thoroughly proficient in grammar and mythology. However, I always felt lacking when it came to the wealth of Latin literature available. Studying Vergil's epic, the Aeneid, took a year in itself. At this rate, I would never become substantially familiar with Latin literature.
Then I was introduced to A Handbook of Latin Literature, a comprehensive reference of all significant authors and works. While the degree of detail makes this book no easy read, the same factor makes it extremely useful, as I can just look up any author or work when I come across an unfamiliar reference and learn everything I need to know. For the Latin scholar, I highly recommend this book as a collection of facts about literature. For the rest of us, A Handbook of Latin Literature serves as an excellent reference book for a topic that is too often ignored.

Viva Elfego!, by Stan Sager

'I will show them there is at least one Mexican in the country who is not afraid of a Texas cowboy.' Having drawn the line, teenager Elfego Baca backed up his words with his six guns. Nobody, but nobody, even Texans, would any longer subject the peaceful Mexican settlers of the New Mexico frontier to abuse, mutilation or humiliation. It took Baca just thirty-six hours in the fall of 1884 to earn his reputation as savior of the Hispanics of the Territory of New Mexico. When the gun-smoke had blown away, the eighty Texans who had poured over 4,000 bullets and a few charges of dynamite into the hut where the teen had taken refuge, toasted his survival with drinks at Milligan's Whiskey Bar. In the sixty years that followed, Elfego made himself into a lawyer often known for sleaze, a politician suspected of dealing under the table, a guy who liked his liquor too much, a bankrupt, and the object of a $30,000 reward by Pancho Villa. But why? Why did the hero fall from grace? Stan Sager has laid out the reasons for Baca's heroism and why he later destroyed his own reputation. Sager's book looks into the hero's childhood in Kansas to find the roots of both his valor and his vulnerability. It tells of the events of his young manhood that made it necessary for the kid who grew up in Topeka speaking English only, to fit himself into the Spanish-speaking community of Socorro the only way he knew how--by bravado and bluster. It relates the bizarre activities that led him to lose his reputation as a hero. And finally, it explains why the hero self-destructed, and it pleas for his forgiveness.

What is fiction?
By T. Norris
I was hoping to achieve much more factual information regarding the exceptional (no doubt) man Elfego Baca. In my eyes he is a New Mexican hero that few, out side of cowboy action shooters, know much about. However, when all of the third party descriptions and conjecture is removed, this book could have been at least 75 pages shorter. From the claim that "He was a kingmaker" to post mortem diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (but wait, that turns out to be another conjecture or possibility), a lot of this book is what "could have been" or "may have been". I was hoping the see more of the claim from another source that: "In May 1885, Baca was indicted for the killing of one of the men. However, when the door of Geronimo Armijo's house was introduced as evidence, having over four hundred bullet holes in it, Baca was acquitted." There was no mention of this door in the book. If it was actually introduced as evidence then wouldn't a review of the case mention the evidence? One should read this book paying close attention to what could have been vs fact or opinion. One very good thing about the book is its references. Now one really interested can find and read them for oneself to determine where the truth lies. I think perhaps this book was written as a justification of the Elfego Baca Project. Not that the project is a bad thing, but when presented with facts, people can make up their own minds about who deserves the title hero without trying to justify, or excuse, the inappropriate behavior not fitting to that title.

The Lincoln County War, A Documentary History (Southwest Heritage), by Frederick Nolan

The legend of the Lincoln County War in New Mexico and its most romantic figure, Billy the Kid, holds a special place in the history of the American West. Fueled by greed, propelled by religious and racial prejudice, inflamed by liquor and firearms, the war was a struggle to the death for the economic domination of a region where both sides saw enormous opportunity for acquiring wealth. In the end, neither side won and both suffered tremendous losses, human and financial.

John Tunstall, the McSweens, Jimmy Dolan, Billy the Kid, the Hispanic townspeople of Lincoln, the outsiders who tried to understand what was happening and restore law and order to the strife-torn territory--all speak out, and Frederick Nolan weaves their stories and opinions together with his own insightful commentary to produce a seamless, immensely readable account enlivened with eighty-three photographs and three maps.

Selected by True West magazine as one of its Fifty Greatest Western Books of the 20th Century, acknowledged to be the fullest and most carefully researched study of perhaps the most famous feud in the history of the American West, Frederick Nolan's masterwork, The Lincoln County War, A Documentary History, the result of fifty years of research, is now presented in a new edition which includes an addendum with corrections and additions, together with a new foreword by the author.

From Library Journal
"The Lincoln County War 1878-81 established nothing and proved nothing." Thus Nolan renders judgment on a conflict for economic control in New Mexico that attracted international attention. Weaving correspondence, newspaper accounts, and other documents into the fabric of his narrative, he strips away many of the myths that have surrounded the participants, often quoting multiple versions of the same event. Nolan provides a very readable and careful analysis of the conflict, adding significantly to the documentation available and to our knowledge of events, extending and amplifying the account in Maurice Garland Fulton's History of the Lincoln County War (Univ. of Arizona Pr., 1968). An important and reliable account essential for Western history collections and strongly recommended for others.

Review
''I have no hesitation in labeling Frederick Nolan the world's foremost authority on the Lincoln County War and Billy the Kid. No one comes close to knowing and understanding as much. His works have vastly enriched the historiography of this significant segment of western American history.'' --Robert M. Utley

Very well done. A lot of research put into the book. that is if you like to wade through sappy letters written by the English dude to his parents and sister. Other than that it is a very good historcal tool that separates the chaff from the wheat and is more true to what factors lead up to the War in Lincoln county. By the way, I live near Lincoln and have gone to the courthouse where the Kid shot his way out. Interesting place and has not been commericalized like the stuff they've done in Santa Fe.... Book is highly recommendedf.
