Spud Johnson and Laughing Horse is a portrait of the soul of a generation of artists and writers, the story of the men and women who made New Mexico a center of regional American literature, criticism and visual arts in the 1920s and 30s. Sharyn Udall's lively account of the quirky editor, poet, journalist, diarist and printer Walter Willard 'Spud' Johnson focuses especially on brilliant and diverse artists-D. H. Lawrence, Mary Austin, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Witter Bynner, Georgia O'Keeffe and John Marin among them-whom he befriended and published. Together they helped to create a new voice for the Southwest, fusing high art and low, repudiating the derivative cultural tradition of their predecessors, and bringing the Native American and Hispanic cultural heritage to the attention of the American mainstream.

From Publishers Weekly
Walter ``Spud'' Johnson (1897-1968) was a New Mexico editor, essayist and poet; Laughing Horse was the iconoclastic literary magazine which he began in 1922 at the University of California and published intermittently for almost 20 more years in Santa Fe and Taos. Part literary biography and part anthology, Udall's book provides detailed information about Johnson and other contributors to Laughing Horse along with numerous reprints of works first published there. Udall offers a lively account of Johnson's time at Berkeley, but the narrative of his later life is overpowered by increasingly frequent and lengthy reprints from the magazine. Nevertheless, Udall's gossipy comments on Johnson's connections with writers such as Witter Bynner, Mable Dodge Luhan, D. H. Lawrence and Upton Sinclair provide useful bits of social and literary history. Udall's reprints of poetry, essays and reviews make accessible many previously hard-to-find texts, yet the infamous ``obscene'' letter by Lawrence that led officials at Berkeley to ban Laughing Horse is notably absent. Art historian Udall includes many illustrations, but there is sparse commentary to bolster her claim that Laughing Horse made important contributions to the graphic arts.

From Library Journal
"Spud" Johnson (1897-1968) published the small literary magazine Laughing Horse between the wars in the flourishing arts communities of Berkeley, Santa Fe, and Taos. Udall, an art historian living in Santa Fe, presents an anthology of essays, fiction, poetry, and illustrations from Laughing Horse and elsewhere (many reprinted here for the first time), interspersed with brief commentaries. Udall's book is divided into three long sections: a biographical introduction, a section on the life and times of Laughing Horse , and a survey of three notable contributors, Witter Bynner, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and D.H. Lawrence. This format is effective in imparting a sense of the atmosphere and personalities that surrounded Johnson. The material on the magazine's struggle with censorship is notable. Recommended for humanities, publishing history, and regional collections.

From the Back Cover
Started as a college prank with two friends at the University of California, Berkeley in 1922, Laughing Horse gained a scandalous reputation and was suppressed by the university for printing an 'obscene' letter by D.H. Lawrence. In this volume are many beautiful woodcuts from Laughing Horse along with sketches and cartoons by a host of artists, including John Marin, Gustave Baumann, and B.J.O. Nordfeldt. Many of the works, both written and visual, have a uniquely New Mexico flavor, and some have not been published since their original appearance in Laughing Horse.Readers of all persuasions who are interested in New Mexico, the larger careers of these individuals, small-press publishing, regional matters, and cultural history will be rewarded by this book.

A Taos Treasure
By Zoe
I bought this book because this summer I had the distinct pleasure of staying at the Laughing Horse Inn, the home of Spud Johnson. I just had to have the book and find out as much as I could about Mr. Johnson, and how he lived in Taos. The book was a huge success. I got an enormous kick thinking about staying in his old room, and reading the book again. The book is a treaure.
