Rachel Berghash's lyrical, impressionistic memoir charts her relationship with her homeland during a lifelong journey of self-discovery, beginning with a child's-eye view of the city's sacred mysteries, her family's religious orthodoxy, and the underlying kinship between Israelis and Palestinians. At eighteen, she serves in the Israeli army, later attends the Rubin Academy of Music, and works as a secretary at the Israeli Parliament and The Jerusalem Post. When she marries an American artist, she moves to New York City and raises a family. Living outside the homeland she loves and having abandoned her adherence to religious strictures, she shuttles between her original and adopted countries. Touching on issues of emigration, exile, family, and reawakening to religion, this book shows how Berghash builds a new house of the spirit, drawing on the foundation of her past while embracing her life's new possibilities.

Review
''A beautiful, deeply stirring memoir about breaking away from Jerusalem, and also about discovering Jerusalem . . . written with the eye of a poet, the insight of a psychologist, and a heart of wisdom.'' --Jonathan Rosen, author of The Talmud and the Internet
''Evocative and engaging . . . a woman's odyssey to accommodate the spiritual mysteries of her birthplace (Jerusalem) and the intellectual freedoms of her adopted city (New York). Rachel Berghash shows how, in a life long struggle to be faithful to both, she made them one.'' --Clinton Bailey, author of Bedouin Poetry from Sinai and the Negev
''A deep affirmation of the human condition expressed with sensitivity and care . . . a beautiful book, at once spiritual and down to earth.'' --Michael Eigen, author of Contact with the Depths, The Sensitive Self, and Madness and Murder

Profound
By Ann Rothschild
I did not want this book to end. It was very good company. It was at once philosophically, poetically, spiritually, politically and psychologically enlightening. It was honest and it was brave. It zoomed out to grapple with the larger Israeli/Palestinian struggle and zoomed in to explore one small Jerusalem street and the joys, sorrows and challenges of the author's family. The author brings many resources to bear as she tries to resolve the conflicts in both. It's a rich multi-faceted treat that I would highly recommend.

Loving Reality
By Kat Jillson
Once you begin reading, it is hard to put down this lovely memoir. The writing is lyrical and, at the same time uncompromising in the author's attention to each part of her life as it was, and is. She recalls in rich detail her Jerusalem and her family, friends and lovers, and others --Arabs and gentiles as well as Jews -- without sentimentality; simply with love. The book is such a pleasure to read that one wishes to hear more from the soul and spirit that is sharing so much with us.

A Gem!
By PETER ALDIN
I read it in one day... It is one of those books that is difficult to put down. A lovely and witty autobiography of a profoundly thoughtful and humane woman, her loves, her family, her difficult trajectory from Israel to New York, her natural sense of tolerance which encompasses both Arabs and Jews, and recognizes as well the universality of monotheistic religions and of religious philosophies. -- Not to be missed.
