This question-and-answer book about Santa Fe, New Mexico contains 400 reminders of what is known and what is sometimes forgotten or misunderstood about a city that was founded more than four hundred years ago. Not a traditional history book, this group of questions is presented in an apparently random order, and the answers occasionally meander off topic, as if part of a casual conversation. What you find here will stimulate your curiosity and invite debate about what history is. References follow each entry. Black-and-white illustrations, photographs, maps, an index, and study guides further enliven this unconventional approach. A compilation of four hundred questions cannot attempt to encompass all of Santa Fe's history, but the bibliography extends an invitation to read more and connect to different topics. Also included is a game (''What Is It?'') scattered throughout the text.

Review
''The brain teasers collected in this book encapsulate historical nuggets drawn from New Mexico's dramatic past. Reading them, New Mexicans and others can test their knowledge of our local history and have fun in the bargain.'' --Marc Simmons, historian and author of numerous books about New Mexico history
''From its ancient beginnings to modern times, Santa Fe's history offers plenty of room for questions, and readers will find challenging, as well as entertaining, answers here.'' --Martin W. Aguilar, former governor of San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico
''The advantage to the nonchronological approach is that it reveals surprises as the reader turns the pages. The book presents scholarly information drawn from archives and published works as well as questions from visitors and recent arrivals to the City Different, and anecdotes from individuals whose families have been here for generations.'' --From the introduction by Adrian Bustamante, ethnohistorian and retired Southwest Studies professor

She worked at the Santa Fe Public Library off and on for over twenty-five years. During 2010 she served on the History Task Force for the Santa Fe 400th Committee for the Commemoration of the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Santa Fe.

This cleverly put together book teases the human brain to explore Santa Fe, N.M.
By Lloyd D. Richards
What I love most about this book of Santa Fe is its surprising twists and turns for showcasing this city's rich history, which is equally suited for the hard-nosed (are there any? Why sure there are!)Santa Fe-an or the new transplant to this fair city of adobe with so much charm. The mapping of this prodigious work brings to mind a giant sphere, with each new surface facet featuring a different question about an artifact, a painting, artist, or a significant historical event -- each fascinating enough to want to delve in further. So I'm glad they invented the post-it notes because I've already filled my copy with blue and green and pink markers on pages that struck me enough to want to find out more. The author has done a splendid job providing an excellent bibliography which is substantial and a handy reference guide. The drawings and pictures are very good aids to the text throughout. This eclectic compendium is more like a 20-volume set Encyclopedia for Santa Fe rolled up into one lovingly rendered and well-vetted tome that every person with an inkling to learn more of Santa Fe's rich and fascinating history would welcome on their bookshelf. And for general American history buffs, this book provides many insights on this great southwestern city's traditions, arts, and important people (of all kinds)which played a larger role in the cultural influence and development of the American west. I highly rate this book!

Fun, light historical facts about Santa Fe.
By tesuqueb
I bought this as a Christmas gift for a history buff after seeing it at the local library. The reciprocant of the book has been spouting fun facts about the town ever since!! Santa Fe is a town rich with anecdotal craziness and this book is light and fun and doesn't take it all too seriously. Great gift. Will buy another copy to have on hand for house guests.
