Surprising new information, meticulously researched, beautifully written

Mlle Chevalier has firmly established herself as the first Trobairitz (or lady troubadour) of La Conquistadora. The distinction is not without significance, as the respected Santa Fe author continues a tradition of fine scholarship inaugurated by Fray Angelico Chavez, the father of New Mexico history, and Chevalier's own professor, the methodical historian and classicist Pedro Ribera-Ortega. A fine history of one of New Mexico's most-beloved icons.

As a resident of northern New Mexico, I attend The Santa Fe Fiesta every fall to enjoy its amazing multicultural entertainments and pageantry. Until now, however, I had only passing knowledge of Fiesta's true centerpiece—La Conquistadora, a much-beloved Marian statue whose rich history dates back several centuries. Author Chevalier tells La Conquistadora's story with exceptional scholarship and infectious passion. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Fiesta and wants to understand its origins and meaning in the most deeply human terms.
