About the Author
Michael A. Williamson was educated at the University of New Mexico. He is a former high school science teacher and was the first curator of birds and reptiles at the Rio Grande Zoological Park at Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is a former Professional Fellow Member of the AAZPA and a co-founder of the New Mexico Herpetological Society. He has authored numerous publications in the field of vertebrate zoology, including a guide to the reptiles and amphibians of New Mexico (also published by Sunstone Press). He has edited two newsletters and reviewed an article on gila monsters for National Geographic Magazine. He also served two terms as a delegate to the New Mexico Conservation Coordinating Council. He is married and has two daughters.

''This is an epic about the winning of the West. We follow the members and affiliates of the Bolt family from their Georgia farm to a horse ranch at the foot of the Sangre de Cristos. There is also a sizable chunk of the Civil War thrown in. Patriarch John Bolt fights for the Union at Glorieta Pass, while back in Georgia his son Wes, who hates slavery, has to fight for the Confederacy. After the war he limps back to the family farm to find that Sherman's march to the sea has left the place in ruins. There's nothing to do but pack up his family and follow the old man.

The title has a double meaning. On one hand, it refers to the long haul to New Mexico, with each river crossing from the Sabine to the Pecos being carefully described, but it also refers to that wide river that all of us must cross someday. The ranch above Las Vegas, New Mexico gradually turns into a sort of earthly paradise where the family is reunited to live in harmony and plenty.

The Bolts are almost tediously handsome and stalwart but the supporting characters, freed from the onus of heroism, are an interesting and likable bunch. There is no middle ground. The good are good and the bad are bad to the bone and very easy to spot: 'He grinned evilly at her, causing a trickle of snuff juice to trace that which was already dried in the creases at the corners of his mouth.' ''This reviewer reads and reviews mostly books on history, so this fictional work is an unusual experience. It must be said that this is an historical novel, and the history is quite accurate, indicating considerable research by the author. The story begins in Savannah, Georgia, in 1835 and ends in New Mexico about 1870. It covers almost too much history in too much detail, as it covers the Mexican War, the Civil War, and various skirmishes in between.

Basically, the book describes the lives and vicissitudes of 12-year-old John Bolt, of questionable parentage, raised by a blacksmith, his marriage to a Cherokee Indian girl, and their progeny. The whole tribe, including non-slave blacks, ends up ranching near Santa Fe. The central character, and his Indian wife, Clemmy, experience about every kind of adventure possible. Clemmy is almost but not quite raped several times and John is shot, speared, and beaten up before the happy ending in New Mexico. The author is fascinated with dialect and the reader tires of black, Georgia Cracker, Indian, and Mexican English. The reader soon comes to anticipate coming happenings since the historical events are obvious. Oh, yes! ''This jam-packed true adventure story details Wilhelmsen's considerable time in Peru in search of Inca treasure and his escapades in Mexico, all of which became source material for travelogues he presented across the country in the 1950s. Wilhelmsen, a past director of the Los Angeles Adventurers Club, has the right credentials to call himself a legend hunter. He received the prestigious I Search for Adventure, Golden Voyage, and Bold Journey television awards. Jack Douglas, the producer of these films, gave him the title of 'The Legend Hunter' which he borrowed for the book. He's not a bad writer, either, as this memoir shows.

In 1533, the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro made his epic march through the deserts and mountains of Peru in search of Cuzco, the golden city of the Inca. Pizarro found gold, and his discovery whetted the appetite of the Spanish for more, setting the stage for their extensive exploration south to the new world. Gold, as artifacts and as the theme for stories and film footage, also motivated Wilhelmsen to launch the six years of adventure travel he talks about in the book.

On stage, his stories and the accompanying footage of Inca ruins, the foreboding jungle and the Indians he encountered along the way made him quite the celebrity. He hit the lecture circuit to share his real-life adventures with Inca artifacts, balky mules, rebellious Indians, revolutionaries, ancient ships filled with guano for the fertilizer business and more. Readers sensitive to the need to record and preserve archaeological sites with find the author's blatant accounts of what is commonly known as grave robbing, a chilling confession. About the Author
ROMAIN WILHELMSEN supported himself on these and other solo expeditions to Mexico, South and Central America, and Africa by filming documentaries and adventure travelogues, and by reporting to the CIA. He is a past director of the Los Angeles Adventurers Club, and has been the recipient of the prestigious I Search for Adventure, Golden Voyage, and Bold Journey television awards. Jack Douglas, the producer of these films, gave him the title of 'The Legend Hunter.' Romain makes his home in East Lansing, Michigan in the shade of Michigan State University where he has lectured in the past. He writes historical novels, and lives with the memories of his late wife and with the momentos of his incredible adventures. Occasionally he will point to a map, and say, 'I just might go back there.' He is the author of two other Sunstone Press books: Buckskin and Satin and Curse of Destiny.

From Pasadena to Peru

Memoirs of a real-life professional explorer---a sort of "Indiana Jones with a dash of Lara Croft" who abandoned an acting career highlighted by study at the Pasadena Playhouse to travel abroad filming exotic and dangerous locales, which he then fashioned into programs for early broadcast television and the lecture circuit. This volume focuses on Latin America of the 1950's and includes a varied cast of characters from a former driver for the German general Erwin Rommel to an intrepid female journalist of the time, one Barbara Holbrook who clearly left a strong impression on the author. I recently (2012) sent a copy of this book to a friend and she liked it very much.

An excellent book

For those of us, old enough to remember the "I search for Adventure" TV series, this is a fascinating book. We finally find out the background and the detailed travails of a great explorer. The discovery of the ancient tomb in the Peruvian desert has remained a secret that his partner Batanero has already taken to his grave. It reads well and adenture after adventure keeps the reader's interest until the last page is turned. It is too bad that the films have not been preserved.

A well-groomed story

Shock-Headed Peter (sometimes known as Slovenly Peter, or even Scruffy Peter, after the German Der Struwwelppeter) is a well-known children's story in German-speaking countries written by Heinrich Hoffmann in 1845; it is lesser known in English and other cultures, although it has made the rounds and resurfaces again and again as a popular children's tale. It is a bit controversial in ways - as one commentator says, the pedagogical content is very nineteenth century in its approach, and sometimes strikes the modern reader as bizarre or even cruel.
It is, in fact, a collection of stories; apart from Shock-headed Peter, we have cruel Frederick, poor Harriet and the matches, the Inky Boys, the man who went out shooting, Conrad who sucked his thumb, fidgety Philip, finicky Augustus, flying Robert, and Johnny with his head in the air. Reading these is somewhat like reading stories by Edward Gorey (the Gashlycrumb Tinies). The kids are disobedient or willful or just the victims of poor habits; in the end, they get a penalty that fits each 'crime', more or less - for example, Harriet playing with the matches eventually sets herself on fire. (This is what I meant by being questionable in its teaching tactics.)
The history of the Latin translation of Shock-Headed Peter is interesting. It is not a recent idea to translate this text, but rather one that has been around for generations. The first Latin translation was produced in 1934, a translation from the English translation; another translation taken directly from the German came in 1938. The translation presented in this book was in fact produced by Peter Wiseman in 1954; together with the original German by Hoffmann and an anonymous English translation, the three texts are presented on each page along with a colourful graphic representation of the character and action of the story.
Following these parts is a new verse translation in English by Ann Wild, and a brief essay on the history of the Latin translation of the text. A glossary (Latin-to-English) is presented, divided up by section going in order of occurrence of the vocabulary, rather than being an alphabetical dictionary type of listing. The glossary puts a simple meaning to the word, to encourage reading rather than analysis.
As a device for studying Latin, this is an interesting method. Wiseman purposely intended this to be a text for relatively beginning students, as well as 'those who are no longer as proficient in Latin.' This makes the text well suited to students and others who wish to practice their Latin on something a bit more fun than the political orations of Cicero.
This is part of the Living Latin series produced by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, who are gaining repute with such texts as this; their series on Dr. Seuss in Latin continues to attract attention, and other children's texts such as Arbor Alma ('The Giving Tree') render into fairly simple Latin tales that are already dear to modern readers, making the somewhat off-putting task of learning a 'dead' language more fun and meaningful.

"And at table Mother's glare / silently at all did stare" (in Fidgety Philip): Nowadays, to the moral toughening up, adults follow up TV-series like "Desperate Housewives", but for a first instruction of little children one could hand the "Shock-Headed Peter". We learn at the figure of TV-star "Susan" (played by Teri Hatcher) in "Desperate Housewives", that it takes trouble if one sets a house on fire, - or, if one does not look, where one steps, he will stumble. The little children (which do not need sex appeal to be able to concentrate on a topic) will learn with clear drawings of the "Shock-Headed Peter", that a house will burn down if one swirled here with open fire (Harriet and the matches). Looking to the marvelous clouds above, Johnny Head-in-Air fells down into a brook, where the fishes are waiting. While the scenes of the TV series "Desperate Housewives", which are rearranged around the overtaxed mother Lynette Scavo (played by Felicity Huffman), are dedicated to all the hard-working mothers, the "Shock-Headed Peter" grasps the core of the evil directly at the collar: the children. Augustus, who wouldn't eat his soup? He starves to death. Basta! If nowadays children go outside, for example at a hurricane of the strength of 5, they are swirled up (like "Flying Robert") as if they would intend to land on the moon. In short: there is nothing more educationally sensible, than giving children an entrance to the portal of life using the book with that tousled-hair Peter on the cover ...

About the Author
Steven M. Cerutti received his PhD from Duke University in 1992 and started the classical studies program at East Carolina University. In 1993 he received a Fulbright scholarship and in 1994 taught Archaeology at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. Cerutti’s publications include three books on Cicero; a popular book on etymology; an introductory textbook on Greek tragedy; numerous articles on Cicero, Roman topography, and numismatics; and book reviews for the American Journal of Archaeology. He currently teaches at East Carolina University.

This book presents a wide range of lung cancer information in a format that is well organized and easy to read, even for someone without a science background. This is a textbook, and as such is not appropriate to answer all questions about lung cancer but rather presents several topics in-depth. If you are a lung cancer patient or family member, you may find some helpful information but do not rely on this book as your only source of information.

If you want to go off of the beaten path, this is for you.

I got a lot of use out of the book and made 2 trips to Thailand on it. I went to Koh Chang, and the information was a great help in helping me plan when to go, what to do, how to get there and everything. It especially helped in Bangkok, which is needed as this is a place where you don't want to seem lost, it is overwhelming. One thing that I would add to this book, When you come out of the last gate at the airport, there will be very many people standing there, waiting for the tourists. Don't look at them!!!! As soon as you make eye contact, they will be on you like white on rice ready to find anything that you might need, just to get some kind of commission. I did a lot of research about a month or two both with this book as well as the internet (check out lonely planet's site, as well as other web queries), so it helps to not get there and open the book for the first time. If you want to go to Phuket or Koh Samui or some other tourist trap, you don't really need a book, but this book might tell you some insider's tips that you might not find just by showing up and waiting to be ripped off. One other thing, about flights, join a courier orgnaization. It will save you A LOT of money and you will only have to sacrifice some baggage space. Another thing, if you decide to go to the tropical spots, best time is the 1st of October. This is the beginning of tourist season, although it doesn't pick up for another month, so you can still do everything without the crowds present yet. One last thing: GO TO KOH CHANG!! It is the best!! This book is to me considered to be a necessary item for travel (Lonely Planet always is!).

Marketed For Whom?

This edition has plenty of information that is helpful. One can get enough information before going, upon arrival, or after arriving on where to explore without this book, however. The Lonely Planet Thailand guidebook (for the entire country and not just the islands and beaches) also has plenty of information on Thailand's islands and beaches.
With the inclusion of "luxury" accommodation and over-priced "tourist" restaurants and trinket shops, it appears this book is marketed towards a particular group: North Americans who only have two-weeks, and therefore need to "plan" ahead for their trip. This is a particular market and that is understandable, but it appears that LP is trying to get a piece of this market, and gear this guide-book towards these type of folks.
One thing to note: Ko Chang is not off the beaten track by any means. It's going to be the next place completely destroyed by the Tourist Authority of Thailand. They are working on it right now, evicting local Thais who've lived there for generations to build hotels.
There is no where in S.E. Asia that is "off the beaten" track, except perhaps, parts of Laos. The trail is crowded, and continues to get bigger. If you're a long-term visitor or a "two-week hoteller" then this book will due.

Poorly organized book with abundant misinformation

I purchased this book thinking that it would be the definitive text on the islands of Thailand. I could not have been more wrong. Lonely Planet's misinformation on the weather patterns (specifically monsoons typical locations at different times of the year) resulted in my being stranded on an island in a monsoon. Other guide books including the rough guide to thailand as well as my German and Irish colleagues books provided accurate information which frequently disagreed with the information in this book. I also found that the rough guide to Thailand provided more complete and accurate information on the islands. Overall I would not recommend this book to anyone- better luck next time to the authors.
