La Llorona: Encounters With the Weeping Woman, by Judith S. Beatty

La Llorona, 'the weeping woman,' is as well known to the descendants of the Spaniards in the Hispanic world as the 'bogeyman' is to many Anglo cultures. In this book of nearly fifty stories told by people from the Southwestern U.S., the dozens of descriptions of La Llorona include a creature nine feet tall and floating across a creek, a ball of fire rolling in your direction, and a gnomish little person with warts on her nose. No matter what she looks like, she nearly always manages to terrorize her wayward victims into changing their ways.

Review
''Here are 47 good stories about the Southwest's most famous apparition, La Llorona; at only a page or two apiece, they are perfect for reading during lunch or before the lights go out at night (assuming you're not too easily frightened by ghost stories). Known throughout the Southwest as an angel, a spirit, a wraith or an elusive being who cries for her lost children, La Llorona often appears near arroyos or rivers and is said to incite good or evil. The stories in this book are all personal recollections of the narrators and are a fascinating addition to Southwest folklore. Be sure to read 'The Rabbit Coat,' set in Villanueva, New Mexico. Another tale, 'The Tiny Screamer,' takes place near Acequia Madre Elementary School in Santa Fe, and 'El Rancho de Los Maranos' has La Llorona east of Roswell.

An enjoyable bonus is the English translation of Spanish dichos, or proverbs, as they frequently appear in the text. Originally compiled in 1988 by the author, a 30-year resident of New Mexico, it includes a Los Angeles sighting of La Llorona by contributor Edward Garcia Kraul and is illustrated with black-and-white drawings by Tony Sanchez.'' ----Betty Parker, Southwest BookViews

''This collection is a compilation of first-hand accounts from those who have seen, or believe in, this lady of local lore who walks the ditches searching for her lost children. Both the tales and the range of La Llorona's interests and social functions go beyond what you might expect! For example, there is the tale from the book's illustrator, Tony Sanchez, who had a vision of her telling him, 'You keep telling everybody...that I'm not real...I will keep appearing in your dreams until you either stop drawing me or start believing.' Consider the account of La Llorona having the Santa Fe police on the run...or a man cured of adultery when he tried to kiss La Llorona...or the braggart drunk tied to the church doors every Sunday until he finally agreed to start going to church willingly! There is much humor in this book, and some good, Halloween-type scary stuff, too. I loved the conversational, oral-history flavor of this read and recommend it to anyone passing through our state or settling here.'' ----Michelle Miller Allen, New Mexico Woman

Fascinating group of tales
By BookLover
I picked up this book expecting it to be one story, but it's actually about 50 stories, all "as told to" the author by various people, and all of the stories are very unusual and unique. Some of them are very, very funny, others very poignant, each of them in the voice of the person telling the story, which holds the reader's attention. The book is in English, but there are dichos interspersed throughout along with Spanish words. For anyone interested in this old legend, don't overlook this; it's definitely a keeper and a good reference book.

Very readable and very entertaining
By Celso Chavez
As we read each story, we hear the voice of the person who told it -- this is the book's greatest strength and the source of its charm. An excellent addition to any library on Hispanic culture.
