To Die in Dinetah: The Dark Legacy of Kit Carson, by John A. Truett

Early in the Civil War, young Terry O'Neill becomes obsessed with the idea of fighting in the Indian wars and volunteers for assignment at Fort Stanton in rugged New Mexico. He joins the famous Colonel Kit Carson, campaigning against the Apaches and Navajos in the deadly snowstorms of Canyon de Chelly, only to find himself a part of the Navajos' torturous 'Long Walk' to imprisonment at Fort Sumner. Struggling to understand the enigmatic Kit Carson while facing death, suffering and the love of a beautiful Navajo girl, Terry O'Neill's cavalier outlook matures in this tender story of real people and actual events during a tragic period of the Old West.

Review
''Truett tells the story of a young recruit, Terry O'Neill, who campaigns with Kit Carson against the Apaches and Navajos, and witnesses the Navajos' 'Long Walk' to Fort Sumner after their defeat at Canyon de Chelly. Although O'Neill admires Carson, he believes the frontiersman was manipulated by General Carleton into using his persuasive skills and reputation for fair dealing to trick the Apache and Navajo into surrendering, a view which Carson denies. Carson believes that General Carleton's aim is to make peace in the most fair and humanitarian way. Whether or not Carleton's ultimate goal was the virtual extinction of the Apache and Navajo as Truett indicates, the general's policies certainly brought no honor to the United States and resulted in human suffering surpassed only by the Trail of Tears. Carson's part in this fiasco is the dark legacy spoken of in Truett's subtitle. Truett's descriptions of an army on the march through a hostile wilderness, and his accounts of military engagements are first-rate. His flair for creating visual imagery cannot be overstated. Recommended reading for its setting and background.'' ----Western Writers of America Roundup Magazine

''Roswell resident Truett's years as a film script writer show through in this well-fashioned novel based on the Navajos' Long Walk. The dramatic events are seen through the eyes of a young man assigned to Colonel Carson, '…the man whom I had looked up to is like a statue on a crumbling pedestal.' For people who enjoy their history wrapped up neatly (and correctly) in novelized form, this is a book not to be missed.'' ----New Mexico Book League

Great Reading, Great History!
By Simbajak
I am fascianted with the history of the Civil War in the west, and especially interested in Kit Carson. One of America's most fascinating individuals if you ask me. Kit Carson was also quite possibly the first rancher and cowboy in the new American West.

This book really does a good job telling a story, with accurate historical facts, while at the same time being a good novel where the characters come to life and fascinate the reader.

This is a great book that offers an accurate history that our school books did not. Read it!

Other books I liked that offer a great read of American West history and Kit Carson:

A Man Named Job and the Navahos

Blood and Thunder

THE LONG WALK TO HELL AND BACK!
By Florine Marcell
i am a member of the Navajo Tribe, therefore it caught my interest. My grandfather told us some stories of that time when our ancestors were part of this long walk. He mentions how the government soldiers destroyed the corn fields and orchard in Canyon DeChelly. He also mention how they survived and how food was preserved and stored. Many Navajo people died along the way. They lived under harsh environment that they were not familiar with. Disease was a huge factor that took many Navajo.

The author knew our cultural ways and I wonder if any of his relatives operated trading post on the reservation. I did not find any information on him. The individuals that operated trading post have acquired knowledge of the Navajo ways. They were the nicest people that put up with a different life style for them to be among the Indians.

TO DIE IN DINETAH
By Luther D. Butler Sr.
Since I wrote a novel, A Man Named Job and The Navahos, about these same people during the same period of time as To Die in Dinetah, I am finding this novel by John A. Truett very exciting, informative, and very readable. Both Truett and I approach the Navajo tribulation of the Long Walk from different angles, it is as if Truett fills in the blanks about this time of horror. My novel gets inside the Navajo people while Truett not only gets inside the people but tells about the government's dealings that brought about the suffering of some very fine native people. Stupendous reading. Thanks
