Medieval Latin has long suffered from a history of misinformation that relegates its study often to the corners of pious seminaries or requisite graduate school courses. Classicists have long decried Medieval Latin as the regrettable devolution of a formerly glorious language. Such an attitude is, of course, as fallacious as it is ill-informed, and the perspicacious scholar of Latin has realized the wealth of delightful material there is available in the corpus of 'medieval Latin' for study and instruction, and the great number of medieval texts that will delight, amuse, touch, and inspire the eager Latinist. In his Medieval Mosaic: A Book of Medieval Latin Readings, A. W. Godfrey has afforded the student of Latin in both high school and college the opportunity to sample some of the best and most beloved Latin Literature from Middle Ages, and the generosity of his selection is assurance that there will be a rich variety of textual appeal. To be sure, from the 'age of faith,' many of the readings assume a religious or miraculous cast, but that should not deter anyone from use of the book: such readings are the authentic voice of the era, and to hold fast to historical accuracy, a book of Medieval Latin readings would be fraudulent if they were not readings incorporating religious sentiments. However there are also other genres represented in Medieval Mosaic: the earthy poems of folk life from the Carmina Burana; the self-absorbed musings of the philosopher Abelard in his memoir History of my Misfortunes, and the colorful recollections of the indiscreet Gregory of Tours in his History of the Franks. Godfrey also performs a great service to the Latin student by including material from every medieval century, the fourth the fifteenth, so that students are able not only to enjoy a wide survey of Medieval Latin material, but also to observe the subtle shifts in the Latin language as it moved progressively away from common parlance and into the revered halls of cathedral schools and universities. The collection of readings is prefaced with a perhaps too brief review of Medieval Latin philology, but, with the student of classical Latin in mind, Godfrey demonstrates some of the syntatical and semantic shifts that occurred in the language naturally over time. Each page is footed with a simple apparatus of the specifics of translation, or clarification of theme or imagery in the 'Supra' reading; each reading is prefaced with a brief mention of historical context of both author (if known) and the content to be read. The volume closes with abbreviated addenda that comprise a list of specifically Medieval Latin words, and a bibliography of medieval history and Medieval Latin anthologies: one would have hoped for lists of wider scope and annotation. Nonetheless, Medieval Mosaic is an appropriate and engaging compilation for use by intermediate Latin students, and it is a wonderful venue with which to introduce students to the notion of Latin as an organic idiom, one that did not die with the passing of Tacitus or Lucan, but persisted for centuries in diverse and novel venues. --June-Ann Greeley, The Classical Outlook

Riddled With Typos

A. W. Godfrey's Medieval Mosaic was the chosen text for my Medieval Latin class, but we were forced to discard it in favor of another text due to numerous typos and oversights. We compared typos in passages found throughout the text with a number of other versions of the Latin only to find that the vast majority of the errors were unique to Godfrey's edition. In many cases, misspellings were apt to cause confusion and mistranslations while Godfrey takes a number of liberalities when discussing peculiar uses of the Latin. My class' excited and hopeful approach to the text was quickly replaced with exasperation. Ultimately, we decided to take up Harrington, Pucci and Elliot's text because it offers better commentary, more thorough footnotes, and above all, significantly fewer typos.

An invaluable addition to academic Latin Studies

Medieval Mosaic: A Book Of Medieval Latin Readings by A. W. Godfrey (Department of Classics and European Languages at SUNY Stonybrook) is an excellent and enthusiastically recommended instructional text for intermediate-level students of the Latin language, and offers more than 75 selections of medieval Latin excerpts ranging from Tertullian, to The Nicene Creed, to the writings of St. Augustine, and more. An invaluable addition to academic Latin Studies instructional materials resource collections, the extensive annotations allow for close study and practice of the classic and instructional Latin language. Also very highly recommended is Professor Godfrey's beginning Latin textbook, Introducing Latin, which is currently in its 6th edition.

Decent compilation with unhelpful commentary and explanations

In Medieval Mosaic: A Book of Medieval Latin Readings, Godfrey has done a decent job of compiling (very) brief selections from a wide range of authors - both renown (Augustine, Boethius, and Aquinas) and less well known - ranging from Late (some might say closer to Mid-) Antiquity to the Renaissance. With that said, his work has many flaws.

First, Godfrey's introductions are frustratingly terse. They fail to appropriately historically contextualize the authors, and they do not place the selections themselves in their actually literary context. Thus, they the leave the reader disoriented when he begins trying to struggle through the selections.

Second, that struggle is only aggravated by the brevity of the selections. Not knowing the context (the first problem), the reader must begin reading at a seemingly random point in the narrative. By the time the reader has determined what is happening in the text, it is the end of the selection.

Third, Godfrey's footnotes are utterly unhelpful. Rather than offering definitions of uncommon terms, parsings of rare forms, and explanations of each author's own turns of phrase, Godfrey does not offer hardly any help.

In sum, this work might succeed as a reader for someone with an especially advanced knowledge of Latin, but it fails as an introduction to Medieval Latin for intermediate students (and beginning students would be totally lost in its pages).

Grade 1-3-The first book examines ways that animals' bodies and/or behavior help them survive in particular habitats. Types of adaptation include camouflage, hibernation, and migration. The second entry looks at the group of animals that includes the kangaroo, koala, and opossum. The last title covers various methods of locomotion such as swimming, flying, and jumping. In all three books, a two-page spread is devoted to a particular topic. Though none of the information is oversimplified, it is rather generalized. For example, in Marsupial, only one page is devoted to the opossum and it includes a discussion of varieties found in other countries as well as the North American species. A combination of color photographs and drawings adequately illustrate the texts. Though the information provided is simple, the language is a bit too difficult for the newly independent readers whom Kalman seems to be targeting. Many of the scientific terms are boldfaced and defined in the text and/or in the glossary, but there isn't much consistency as to which ones are defined where. Of the three books, Marsupials is the most successful, mainly because it has the narrowest scope. However, none of these offerings is in-depth enough to serve as a primary source for reports. All three are best suited to youngsters looking for brief answers to satisfy their curiosity and casual browsers who are animal enthusiasts.

Animals move in an incredible variety of ways. Some fly. Some swim. Others swing from tree branches. This book looks at more than a dozen ways in which animals get around, and it shows how the body of each animal is equipped for its own form of travel. We see amazing adaptations, from the hairy bristles on the legs of a water beetle (which make the legs more effective as oars when the insect rows through the water), to the patagium, or flap of skin, on each side of a flying squirrel's body (which enables the animal to glide from tree to tree). Readers are bound to learn something new from this book, whether or not they are familiar with all the animals in it. (They probably aren't--do you know what a basilisk is?) For example, both frogs and kangaroos have strong hind legs that are longer than their front ones, and both animals use those long hind legs to hop. But frogs land on their front legs, so they have to stop between leaps; kangaroos land on their hind legs, and so they don't have to pause. The book would benefit from a more extensive glossary, but even so, it is a welcome addition to the Science of Living Things series. Don't be surprised when your little readers start to hop, squirm and wriggle around the house, trying out new forms of locomotion.

Richard Melzer is a professor of history at the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus. He is an award-winning author of many books and articles about New Mexico, including two grade school textbooks to be published in anticipation of New Mexico's centennial celebration of statehood in 2012. He is the President of the Historical Society of New Mexico. Unheralded history of New Mexico

It included just about everyone who was anyone in 19th century New Mexico including the good, bad and ugly who made a name for themselves. A few were missed or overlooked, mainly, Hispanos, such as Daniel "Two-Gun" Archuleta , my great grand uncle , A US Marshall assassinated by the Grijalva Bros. during a political election being held in the tough cow town of Magdalena NM.

Most books with this much information cost over 20. Sure there are other good books, but not at this price!

'These archives,' writes Ralph Emerson Twitchell, 'are by far the most valuable and interesting of any in the Southwest.' Many of these documents were given a number by Twitchell, small stickers that were appended to the first page of each document, an act of heresy to archivists and yet these stickers have now become part of the artifact. These are the doors that Ralph Emerson Twitchell opened at the dawn of the 20th century with a key that has served scholars, policy-makers, and activists for generations. In 1914 Twitchell published in two volumes The Spanish Archives of New Mexico, the first calendar and guide to the documents from the Spanish colonial period.

Volume One of the two volumes focuses on the collection known as the Spanish Archives of New Mexico, Series I, or SANM I, an appellation granted because of Twitchell's original compilation and description of the 1,384 documents identified in the first volume of his series. The Spanish Archives of New Mexico was assembled by the Surveyor General of New Mexico (1854-1891) and the Court of Private Land Claims (1891-1904). The collection consists of civil land records of the Spanish period governments of New Mexico and materials created by the Surveyor General and Court of Private Land Claims during the process of adjudication. It includes the original Spanish colonial petitions for land grants, land conveyances, wills, mine registers, records books, journals, dockets, reports, minutes, letters, and a variety of other legal documents.

Each of these documents tell a story, sometimes many stories. The bulk of the records accentuate the amazingly dynamic nature of land grant and settlement policies. While the documents reveal the broad sweep of community settlement and its reverse effect, hundreds of last wills and testaments are included in these records, that are scripted in the most eloquent and spiritual tone at the passing of individuals into death. These testaments also reveal a legacy of what colonists owned and bequeathed to the next generations.

Most of the documents are about the geographic, political and cultural mapping of New Mexico, but many reflect the stories of that which is owned both in terms of commodities and human lives. Archives inevitably, and these archives more than most, help to shape current debates about dispossession, the colonial past, and the postcolonial future of New Mexico. For this reason, the task of understanding the role of archives, archival documents, and the kinds of stories that emanate from them has never been more urgent. Disorganized and a waste of money

SUMMARY OF MY REVIEW: Save your money and get free guides at the Cape Town tourism office instead!!!

Lonely Planet guides usually rate pretty good in my view, but this guide to Cape Town has made me re-think my devotion to Lonely Planet books. The one positive thing I have to say about this book is that it is small and packs easily, and that is why I think this guide deserves even one star.

The book is a very disorganized rambling description of Cape Town and neighboring communities. The guidebook begins with a historical overview, which is appreciated, but then is divided into sections that defy logical order. One of the first sections in the book, for example, is about wineries. Why is this section near the front of the book? Shouldn't more essential Cape Town items like lodging and dining come before wineries? Some destinations, such as the wine country, have different descriptions in more than one section of the book, making this book even more frustrating to use.

Additionally, there are very detailed descriptions for things like how to buy a car in Cape Town (how many vacationers are actually going to buy a car and then resell it while on their vacation???), but descriptions of more touristy things like Table Mountain or the Kirstenbosch Gardens are lacking.

Speaking of lacking, when you're in a new city, good maps are essential. So why are the maps in this guide so lacking in detail? The free maps at the Cape Town tourist office are ten times better.

It would be a much more effective guidebook if (1) it were organized in a more logical fashion, and (2) gave readers a clearer picture of what is a "must see" versus something not so good. Frommer's has a pretty good guide to South Africa in general, but I bought this one because it was specific to Cape Town and because it was small and portable.

Bottom line is that if you go to Cape Town, avoid using this as a guide. I'm sure there are better guides out there. If not, the tourist offices in Cape Town are EXCELLENT resources.

About the Author
Storyteller and author John Stansfield began exploring western North America as a boy in 1960 and has never stopped. He loves hiking and skiing the West and telling stories about its diverse lands, wildlife and people. He previously wrote Enos Mills: Rocky Mountain Naturalist (Filter Press, 2005) for the Now You Know Bio series. Stansfield presents a one-man show for all ages reenacting the life of Enos Mills. He teaches storytelling on the adjunct faculty of the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs. John's efforts to protect and preserve Colorado's wild places earned the Environmental Heroes Award from the Widerness Society in 2004. John and his wife Carol live in Larkspur, Colorado.

John Denver: Man for the World

this is a wonderful introduction to the life of John Denver for the young reader. The content is excellent and is written in a friendly tone. I love the Know More sections, which further explain some of the concepts covered in the text. The Story Behind the Song boxes give an insight into what inspired some of the songs that John wrote.
Every school library should own a copy of this book to encourage children to read about the life work of John Denver. I purchased two copies of this book - one for me and one to be donated to a school.

not what I was looking for

For those who are all about the music, this might be just right. I wanted a more multi-faceted picture, his personal life, history, etc. This was all touched on, but the book was laser-focused on the music, other groups at the same time, charts, etc. and how all the music groups, songs etc. were linked. Like I said, I wanted a more rounded and personal view, but I guess it's what you're looking for.

Great translation, a must read as it is really short

Usual amazing Plato-ness. The preface to this has a detailed discussion of how Plato makes Socrates seem a bit "Superior". I agree as this is a dialectic challenge, i.e. creating a speech of one's own defense that doesn't result in a person being "defensive" or at the very least outraged at false accusations. I found his discussion on politics and justice or righteousness to be fascinatingly timeless.

standard school text of the Apology

This textbook has much to recommend it. I used it this year in an advanced high school Greek course and know of no textbook either in or out of print that is more helpful. As a practical matter, it supersedes all earlier editions, most of which fail to meets the needs of current students.

The text contains a complete vocabulary. Each page of Greek text is accompanied by extensive notes on the facing page (along with translations of words that appear infrequently). While the Apology is often labeled an "intermediate" Greek text, it features many challenging constructions, including (to cite only a few) prolepsis, anacoluthon, attraction, and frequent ellipses. Intermediate Greek students cannot possibly unravel these syntactical knots without useful explanatory notes. Helm's comments are crisp and on point. Nor does he co-opt the student's task of translating.

Also included are references to more detailed treatments of grammatical points found in Herbert Weir Smyth's monumental "Greek Grammar." There are useful appendices, one with diagrams of several long and complicated sentences, another containing principal parts of key verbs found in the work. Overall, the notes are directed to the student who is coming to the text of the Apology for the first time.

My only quibble with this textbook is the Greek font, which I do not find especially appealing. I much prefer the Porson font found in the Bryn Mawr commentary of the same work.

As for the Apology itself, it is one of the great masterworks of Greek literature. To read it in Greek is an education in itself. An ancient commentator insightfully pointed out that the work is really four things: 1) a defense speech proper; 2) a counter-indictment of the Athenian people; 3) a portrait of Socrates the man; and 4) a depiction of the ideal philosopher. It truly is each of these things, and the brilliance of Plato's achievement lies in his simultaneous handling of these different aims.

The speech can be approached from a range of perspectives. In the very least it is a fascinating study in Athenian legal procedure (Socrates was tried by a jury of 500 Athenian citizens), where judges and lawyers played no role in the trial and jurors were largely free to interpret the charge however they wished. The speech also must be situated in its historical context, namely, the end of the Peloponnesian War, the rule of the Thirty Tyrants, and the restoration of the Athenian democracy. The way in which the traditional morality of Athens was challenged by the sophists must also be considered closely for a full understanding of the speech.

Some have argued that Socrates did a poor job of defending himself. Certainly there are passages where, rather then defending himself, he condemns the Athenians for failing to tend to their own souls and warns them in no uncertain terms that they will only be the worse for executing him. In the end, the speech is extraordinarily moving in its depiction of Socrates' unflinching moral courage and absolute devotion to his philosophical mission.
