About the Author
Pat Shapiro, MSW, RYT, is the founder and director of SageWays: Yoga for Midlife and Beyond in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For over twelve years, she has studied an approach to yoga that was brought to the West through the teaching of T.K.V. Desikachar. She has taught yoga for more than six years in Philadelphia and Santa Fe and has also done intensive yoga study at Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai, India. Pat has a special interest in the mid-life years and has written two books on the subject: MY TURN: Women's Search for Self After the Children Leave and HEART TO HEART: Deepening Women's Friendships at Midlife. She is also the author of four other nonfiction books, a writing instructor and coach, and speaker on women's issues.

A life support for women...

I've been doing yoga for over 30 years and have read a lot of yoga books. This is the first book I've found that really speaks to me as a woman in her early 60s. The author's voice is warm and inviting, the illustrations are easy to follow, and I feel so relaxed and clear after I do one of the recommended practices. Yoga for Women at Midlife & Beyond

What a relief that someone addressed the older woman when it comes to yoga. The photos show mature women, not the young lithe things featured in yoga magazines. And the New Mexico author is a mid-life woman herself who teaches yoga; and her style of writing is soft and gentle making this book a great home companion The book focuses on ten everyday practices from five to and ten-minute practices to sequences designed to calm, energize, reduce stress and induce more inner reflection. Shapiro even has a sequence for sitting in a chair if you can't stand and another for standing with a chair if you need help with balance. Nowhere is twisting into a pretzel to find nirvana advocated here. The book is basic, simple yoga. Throughout are detailed drawings that demonstrate the correct posture for the different poses.

This book was a great resource for me. I have just started taking yoga classes, and was feeling very old! This book explained beautifully the practice of yoga for those of us beginning in midlife, and really lessened my fears and anxiety. The exercises and poses are definitely doable, even for the inflexible, and like me, for those new to yoga. A great read!
