A good intermediate practice to Latin

Having tried to learn Latin, I found reading the Classics was extremely difficult. Afterall, it is written by a native speaker, and I am no Latin native speaker. So I found this book to be very useful. The only problem is that it emulates Dr. Seuss's writing so well, that the whole book uses pretty much once case in Latin. You will learn that case very well, but won't be able to practice other cases in normal writing. However, I think it was a terrific idea, and I like the fact that all the words are listed in the back (as well as the context). The fact that it uses more mundane words (compare with Caesar's Gaelic Wars) is also great for intermediate readers.
All in all, I consider it time well spent, not to mention, its just fun reading Dr. Seuss in Latin.

Appeals to any audience

Having studied Latin throughout high school, I could appreciate the innovation and creativity necessary to translate Dr. Seuss' classic story while still preserving rhyme and meter. However, my little sister, who has just recently learned to read on such classics as "The Cat in the Hat," perhaps enjoyed "Cattus Petasatus" even more than I did. Not automatically looking to identify subject and verb, she giggled with delight at the new words that roll off the tongue with the catchy meter and bragged to my parents that she was able to speak Latin! Because the pictures are the same as the English, she was able to follow the storyline and give expression to the words.
Whether as an introduction to Latin or an amusing twist of the Dr. Seuss classic, "Cattus Petasatus" is a wonderful variation that will make the reader and audience smile.

Optime! But be warned...Tougher than you think

I am a three year Latin student, and am particularly obsessed with the language. When I got this book, I was expecting a light and funny Latin read. However, I was surprised by its difficulty. Because the book has been (brilliantly) rendered into the same rhyming meter as Seuss' English version, the words in Latin do not directly correspond to the English. This makes it infinately more challeging, in that you cannot check your translation against the English book. In fact, it took me a good month or so to get through it. Despite the challenge, it was highly enjoyable to read. I am amazed by the skill it would take to rhyme the words in Latin in the same way Seuss originally did, while keeping the same baisic meaning. If students of the language would like a slightly easier read, I would highly recommend "Ferdinandus Taurus", which is also fun to read but with less complex language and grammar.

One of the most interesting and fun books to read.

"The Grinch Who Stole Christmas," in Latin is one of the greatest Latin books I have read. I am a student of Latin and it is hard to find interesting books to read and translate. The translation is not hard and with the glossary, it makes reading very easy.

When I first saw the book I knew it was what I was looking for. The idea of putting children's books into Latin is great because books in Latin are very few and far in between. I liked the book because it is colorful and easy to translate. Also the book makes a great gift for Latin students and teachers because it makes Latin a fun and interesting langauge.

First Pooh, and now the Grinch?

Imagine my surprise when this showed up one day from a friend of mine. He gave it to my wife and me because she was a religion major and I'm a theology student working through my latin. There is nothing quite as fun as trying to make sense of something you already know, and the Grinch is a story I've known for years! The flow and cadence are even preserved, making the translators into linguistic artists beyond compare! Just be sure to pick up Winnie Ille Pu as well, and read to your kids in a language that is, to quote Python, "not dead yet!"

It protects his head when he fights other male lions. Lionesses do not have manes.

Wonderful Introduction to Yoga

I purchased this book to give to my six year old niece for her birthday coming up this fall. I've been perusing the contents, and I find myself thinking maybe I should get another one for me!

As a trained health education specialist, I really appreciate how the authors have organized the book into a variety of different yoga sequences all with themes, such as poses that kick, poses that get wet, and out of this world poses. It shows that they know that it's important to really engage children on their level while teaching.

And it's not just the names of the themes that are fun. The explanations of the poses are fun too. Many of them offer information of interest to a child, such as how far a lion cub can hear his mama roar! They also offer benefits to each pose that the "teacher" can discuss with the child as the child's interest in this great form of exercise is learned.

I can't wait to pass this book along to my niece, and in the mean time I may take a page from the book and use some of the helpful and simple relaxation exercies and use them while destressing at work!

Ovid with Love by P. Murgatroyd is an aptly named selection of 770 lines from Ars Amatoria 1 and 2 and with its 23 page introduction on Ovid's life, Augustan and pre-Augustan love poetry, 148 pages of commentary and complete vocabulary, it is a potentially useful sixth-form reader.

The importance of stylistic and metrical features in Ovid's writing has led the author to comment fully on them over the first 92 lines and then, progressively, to leave it to the pupils to make their own investigation; notes on comprehension, and these always precede those on literary criticism, are detailed throughout; indeed at times one feels that there is overkill: e.g., 2, 431 (OCT) nam modo Threicio Borea, modo currimus Euro; on 'Threicio' the note reads: Thrace was a cold wintry region to the North of Greece, and so in Greece the chill North Wind was often called 'Thracian' and described as having its home in Thrace (because it came from that direction).

However, as Murgatroyd points out, he has tried to bridge a number of levels in this edition and the notes, which are set separately at the end of the text, need be no more obtrusive than individually desired. There are advantages in being able to sample from two books of the Ars when the selection is as carefully made as this one and in criticizing the fullness of some notes one ought not to forget the plight of the weaker student. --Greece & Rome

The BEST Way to Read Latin Literature

Let me just say that if you can read Latin, this is the essential way to read the fantastic works of Ovid. These selections from the Ars Amatoria and the Remedia Amoris are very fun to translate, as well as applicable to our modern society. The great thing about this book, though, is that there are vocabulary definitions ON THE SAME PAGE as the text itself, thereby eliminating the boredom of shuffling through a Latin dictionary, not to mention his notes on difficult to translate sections. There is also a pull out small dictionary at the back of the book, which contains every word that appears more than 10 times in the work. Therefore, this is the only book you'll need to translate, as opposed to a Latin dictionary. This takes the fun out and leaves only the pleasures of reading Latin literature.

Iain Baxter legally changed his name to IAIN BAXTER& in 2005. He appended an ampersand to his name to underscore that art is about connectivity — about contingency and collaboration with a viewer. He also effected the name change to perpetuate a strategy of self re-definition that is central to his creative project. BAXTER& began making art in the late-1950s under his birth name but quickly realized that the name itself was creative material, to be deployed, manipulated, and shared. In 1965, he formed a collaborative art-making entity which evolved into N.E. Thing Company, a corporate-styled entity whose co-presidents were BAXTER& and his wife Ingrid. Producing a diverse array of projects that encompassed conceptually based photography, pioneering works of appropriation art, and gallery transforming installations, the N.E. Thing Company offered a new model of art making, allowing the artists to remain anonymous and masquerade in the guise of business people.

Following the dissolution of N.E. Thing Company in 1978, BAXTER& produced extensive bodies of work with Polaroid film, created numerous installations that blended painting and sculpture, and made pedagogy a focus of his creative enterprise. Consistent themes permeate his work and vector through his thinking. And by assessing these themes — a relentless emphasis on reaching out to the viewer, a core concern with ecology and the environment, and a belief that art must assume plural means and media — one discerns BAXTER&'s creative credo, understanding that "art is all over."

This comprehensive book reviews BAXTER&'s remarkable career across all media. It accompanies a major international touring exhibition, which opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago in November 2011 and at the Art Gallery of Ontario in April 2012. About the Author
David Moos is an art advisor based in Toronto. From 2004 to 2011, he served as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario, where he organized such exhibitions as The Shape of Colour: Excursions in Colour Field Art, 1950-2005, and Julian Schnabel: Art and Film. He holds a PhD in art history from Columbia University, New York.

Alexander Alberro, Virginia Bloedel Wright Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at Barnard College and Columbia University, is the author of Conceptual Art and the Politics of Publicity (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2003). His essays have appeared in a wide array of journals and exhibition catalogues. He has also edited and co-edited a number of volumes, most recently Institutional Critique: An Anthology of Artists' Writings (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2009).

David Moos is an art advisor based in Toronto. Michael Darling has been the James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, since 2010. From 2006 to 2010, he was the Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Seattle Art Museum and Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, from 1998 to 2006. He has also written extensively on contemporary art, architecture, and design for exhibition catalogues, magazines, and newspapers since 1992.

Dennis W. Durham is an independent art historian. He received his PhD in art history from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he studied with Robert Hobbs. He serves on the editorial board for IAINBAXTER&raisonnE, a Web-based research and archive site for the study of BAXTER&, and is working on a collaborative volume on information theory and conceptual art due out in 2012 by YYZ Press.

Christophe Domino is an independent art writer, curator, lecturer, and professor established in Paris. He writes for Le Journal des Arts (Paris), has contributed numerous essays to catalogues and academic and museum publications, and has written a dozen books, including À ciel ouvert ; L'art contemporain à l'echelle du paysage (London and New York: Scala, 2005); with André Magnin, L'art africain contemporain (London and New York: Scala, 2005); Les années pop (Paris: Éditions Gallimard, 2001); and Bacon: Monstre de peinture (Paris: Éditions Gallimard, 1996). He also teaches and is involved in institutional boards and organizations (AICA, FRAC Bretagne, Archives de la critique d'art). Domino has worked with IAIN BAXTER& since 1997 on texts, exhibitions, and projects, from Géographhiques (Corsica: FRAC Corse, 1997) to IAIN BAXTER&: Art Is All Over (with Marie-Josée Jean) (Villa Arson Centre national d'art contemporain, 2006).

Lucy R. Lippard is a writer/curator/editor/lecturer/activist and the author of twenty-one books on contemporary art and cultural criticism, most recently Down Country: The Tano of the Galisteo Basin, 1250-1782 (Santa Fe, NM: Museum of New Mexico Press, 2010); The Lure of the Local: Senses of Place in a Multicentered Society (New York: New Press, 1997); and On the Beaten Track: Tourism, Art, and Place (New York: New Press, 1999). She is a receipient of seven honorary degrees, a Guggenheim fellowship, and a Lannan grant, among other awards. Her most recent curatorial venture was Weather Report: Art and Climate Change (Boulder, CO: Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, 2007). She lives in rural Galisteo, New Mexico, where she is on the County Traditional Community Planning committee and for fifteen years has edited the monthly community newsletter, El Puente de Galisteo.

Robert Wainstein is Project Assistant, Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario. He received a bachelor of arts from the University of Pennsylvania, where he co-curated Louis I. Kahn: The Making of a Room, exhibited at the Arthur Ross Gallery. He worked as a curatorial intern at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art before joining the AGO in 2010.

Adam Lauder is W.P. Scott Chair for Research in e-Librarianship at York University, where he is developing an online catalogue raisonné of the work of IAIN BAXTER&. He is also author of a chapter on BAXTER& and the N.E. Thing Co. in Byproduct: On the Excess of Embedded Art Practices (Toronto: YYZ, 2010) as well as journal articles in the Journal of Canadian Art History, Technoetic Arts, and Rampike. Lauder is also a contributor to Border Crossings, C, and Hunter and Cook magazines.

Isabelle Hermann is completing doctoral studies in art history at Paris 1, La Sorbonne, writing a dissertation under the direction of Professor Dagen that explores the reconceptualization of nature as an ecosystem in contemporary art since the late 1960s. Her master's thesis analyzed the N.E. Thing Co. and IAIN BAXTER&. Her analysis of the early production of BAXTER&, work strongly influenced by his ecological studies, spurred her current research on teh environment. Hermann is also a lawyer.

There is no doubt that the scientific vocabulary in English and other languages has increased enormously with every advance of modern science and technology, and this is in addition to the technical vocabulary for non-scientific discourse and disciplines.

Richard Krill's Greek and Latin in English Today is clear evidence that help is available for those who would like to find a way to master this very necessary vocabulary which is in great part derived from Greek and Latin. Dr. Richard Krill, who is Professor of Classics and Humanities and Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of Toledo, has put together a valuable handbook to introduce students and others 'to a concentrated study of important Greek and Latin roots commonly found in English vocabulary and to set forth for their benefit the basic principles upon which new words are coined annually even to this day from these ancient languages. The primary purpose of this text is to assist in these efforts' (preface). This book is not a classical languages textbook but it is a book that will familiarize the students with some very necessary Greek and Latin that will enable them to master technical vocabulary in a variety of fields more easily, including literature and the arts, medicine, law, philosophy, theology, botany, zoology, astronomy, pharmacy, chemistry, psychology, sociology, government, and education.

Real Greek and Latin are presented in their complete, natural and original form. More detailed vocabularies of selected fields are included in a special section. There is a wide variety of exercises for the student to practice with at the end of each chapter, and it is obvious that the user of this book will also need a hefty and reliable English dictionary with etymologies.

The three principal parts of Krill's work embrace (1) Derivatives from Greek (with a General Greek Vocabulary); (2) Derivatives from Latin (with a General Latin Vocabulary); (3) Derivatives/Phrases in Selected Fields (including mottoes, degree titles, educational terms, and time expressions). The book uses a graded, incremental approach to building English vocabulary, while at the same time encouraging the student to learn elements and structures derived from ancient Greek and Latin. Krill's book has already actually been successfully tested with hundreds of students in real classroom situations in a number of major universities and is now being made available to a much wider audience. In June 1991 cassettes will be circulated by which students can hear proper pronunciation of the Greek and Latin words and their English derivatives.

Greek and Latin in English Today is a very serious attempt to offer a practical handbook for the use of Greek and Latin in English. Though some will be able to use the book without a competent teacher, most will need a classically trained instructor to get the most out of this book, which will surely replace all previous books on the subject for some time to come. --John E. Set mostly in the latter part of this century in either Louisiana or Texas, the stories in this accomplished debut collection introduce characters drawn from a diverse cross section of America. Mogan's range is wide enough to do justice to both the narrator of ``Syzygy,'' a chillingly self-absorbed matron who long ago stole and married her twin sister's beau, and the angry, loving, AIDS-wracked gay lovers of ``See to Appreciate.'' In ``Desaparachos,'' which centers on a group of Salvadorans illegally migrating to the U.S., Mogan constructs a subtle biblical allegory while exploring the collision between the two cultures (which turns out to be literal as well as figurative). She also brilliantly captures the cadences and quirks of vernacular speech, as in ``See Ya Later, Floydada,'' in which a radio announcer offers for sale "`a pire of what cheers upholstered in naugahyde.'" Many of these intricately constructed stories end with a bittersweet nugget of revealed wisdom, such as the realization by the protagonist of ``The Proselyte,'' that ``from now on he would be carrying the burden of seeing partly through his parents' eyes, partly through Hector's but mostly through his own.'' Searing, unforgettable images--including a deserted, industrially poisoned town transformed into a bizarre and kitschy Christmas spectacle in ``A Certain Lot or Parcel of Land''--seem to be a specialty of this gifted writer. Bracing, original and peculiarly American, Mogan's voice is mature enough to explore public themes and issues like abortion, immigration and race with an insight that springs from her fidelity to her characters.

This raw, colorful debut collection by Texan Mogan packs a visceral punch as unsparing as Flannery O'Connor's, though Mogan lacks the patience needed for a timely delivery. In the "Age of Reason," when Rachel's grandfather, Grundy, becomes "one with the Spirit," he speaks in tongues and schedules the Rapture-the End, for the day after Easter. Although it doesn't come, his dreams foretold his family's deliverance and he must act. In "Mad," mute Baby Girl, age ten, watches as her mother and the black handywoman join forces to battle a raving, drunken old tinker who has invaded their home. The title story tells of a forbidden interracial romance in a Louisiana old folks' home for the "about-to-be-dead" and the "all-but-dead," where a suitor's jealousy and the staff's spiteful neglect doom the aged couple. With a touch of polish and some restraint about killing off her more interesting characters, Mogan could emerge as a major Southern talent. Recommended.

In "See Ya Later, Floydada", a displaced, divorced schoolteacher in a lonely West Texas town finds herself enamored of the local disk jockey; in "Desaparachos", a group of illegal Salvadoran immigrants meet with tragedy on their trek into Texas. "Syzygy" is the story of a brilliant young singer who loses her lover to her twin sister, then gives up her career and family to disappear into the fringes of society. Characterized by a wonderful blend of humor and compassion, and written with an eye for the striking detail and an ear attuned to the rhythms of speech, Beyond Telling is a welcome collection by an engaging new talent.
