From Publishers Weekly
In her 17th collection of short fiction, Oates ( With Shuddering Fall ) retrieves stories from her first six, as well as two stories not previously published in book form. And while the volume includes some of her best-known work ("Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?"), the chance to savor "The Molesters," never reprinted before though eventually included in her novel, Expensive People , and "How I Contemplated the World from the Detroit House of Correction and Began My Life Over Again" is momentous. For in stories such as these, the writer shows early signs of the sinister ingenuity and command of psychological nuance later fulfilled in other ways in other books. The new collection of work, dating from the 1960s and 1970s, reveals a consistency of theme. Oates demonstrates, for instance, that she was, as she is, cool-tempered yet seductive in her canny portrayals of innocence on the verge of defilement--and afterwards. The collection also displays the author's imaginative restlessness, and an apparent search for an anti-self in fiction concerned with molested children and suburban victims of sleaze and angst. Longtime fans will be pleased to be reminded of how Oates began, and first-time readers will find a good place to start.

You'll be charmed by Oates' world
By Adel Andersen
There must be a lot of people, who became Oates'fans after they read "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" Typically, Teenagers tend to disobey adults like their parents and teachers and to be self-centered. Heroine Connie is such a girl. Connie's charactor will arouse sympathy from readers. There must be many points that we used to think and behave like her when we were teenagers.

Connie is a self-centered girl. She is not chummy with her family and always resists her mother. She does not go to a church, does not help her mother, is not interested in family matters, and looks down on people. She cares her appearance, hangs out with her friends, likes shopping, and listens to rock'n rolls. She is, so-called, a typical rebellious teenager. One day, a mysterious guy shows up and causes something wired for her.

Joyce Carol Oates, the author of this novel, has been recieved many awards. This work was made into the movie, retitled for "Smooth Talk." This book will attract you and is worth reading. I think you will like it.

award-winning author for a REASON!
By Ashley
It bothers me to imagine people who are interested in finding out more about the works of Joyce Carol Oates may not buy this book because there aren't any really in-depth reviews of it. So I'd like to give you my insight into the novel.
I first became interested in Oates after reading "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been", the short story, for a college English course. After reading the story, I was instantly hooked. It is EXCELLENT, and so worthy of being read you could buy the book for that reason alone. I went on to write a fairly large essay on it simply because I enjoyed it so much, and I felt the need to analyze it so that I could better understand what is behind the story. If I had not done so, I probably would be in the "I just didn't GET it" category like some of the other more casual readers.
"Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" is, on the surface, a short story about a 15-year old girl named Connie. Connie is vain and self-involved, full of the sense of superiority that comes from being young and thinking you know everything. She has a strained relationship with her family. Connie believes her mother is jealous of her because the mother's looks have faded with age and children, while Connie is still young and beautiful. Connie's sister June is (in Connie's eyes) "chunky" and "plain". Connie enjoys looking down on other people, especially socially inept or unattractive boys.
One day her family is safely away at a barbecue, and a boy Connie has only once seen before while at a drive-through restaurant pulls up at her house accompanied by a male friend. Typically, Connie is at first only conscious of her appearance--does she look nice enough to greet the semi-stranger? She is unaware of any danger at having a strange man/boy show up at her house while she is home alone. The guy--who introduces himself as "Arnold Friend"--invites Connie to go for a ride in his car. Connie first thinks Arnold is around her own age, but as she stares at him longer and longer suspects something strange is going on: "She could see then that he wasn't a kid, he was much older--thirty, maybe more". And indeed, something strange IS going on.
I don't want to give away the rest of the story. I think I'd rather leave you wondering what happens to Connie and if her parents show up in time to make Arnold high-tail it out of there. In fact, the story has a rather open-ended conclusion, but that makes it all the more tantalizing.
Like most of the stories in the novel, when you first read the short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" you are probably not going to immediately understand it. There are those who have said they despise Oates, but those are the people who won't like her writing because they don't WORK at it. Yes, you may have to WORK if you want to understand her stories. The best suggestion I can offer you is--READ EACH STORY THROUGH AT LEAST TWICE if you don't understand it the first time around! Don't get frustrated. Be willing to invest a little extra time in this book; you will be rewarded for your patience. I honestly believe it will be worth your while. You may find my suggestion boring and tedious. It's easy to simply give up on a story when you don't understand it right away. I urge you--don't make that mistake with this book.
Joyce Carol Oates is widely read for a REASON! The novel contains stories which received O. Henry Awards, in addition to other stories which were previously printed in such places as The American Literary Anthology and The Best American Short Stories. Again, Oates's work may not be the most easily comprehensible. But this is a very good collection of her works, and it will give you a great idea of her writing style. I hope you are as taken with it as I am.

Somewhat unsettling but very well-written
By Jennifer A. Johnson
There is something very unnerving to me about these stories, something that makes me feel exposed and unsettled. Many of the stories deal with awkwardness and youthful vulnerability, and the mood is contagious.
Regarding the famous title story "Where Are You Going", my husband suggested that it is a dream sequence about a young girl's decision to lose her virginity, rather than an actual occurrence. This makes it a little less tense ~ but only a little.
Every story is very well-written and captivating, though not exactly pleasant. These subjects are hard to look in the eye.

There are few ancient authors as compelling as Lucretius: scientist, poet, philosopher, passionate observer of nature. While Caesar, Cicero and Vergil have long vied for first place in the classical curriculum, Lucretius' treatment of universal human matters rightfully earns him a place in their company.

Catto's text of Lucretius provides 53 passages in 1294 lines, spanning all 6 books of the epic. Each section features a short introduction, discussion questions, vocabulary and extensive line-by-line notes on facing pages and a wide variety of illustrative quotations from both ancient and modern sources.

Review
Bonnie Catto's Lucretius: Selections from De Rerum Natura is a welcome achievement for those of us who introduce this exciting text to high-school students... I have found other editions to be either too abridged, or too advanced in their expectations of the students' ability with Latin; all are too sketch in their presentation of modern scientific theory. Catto, however, provides enough notes so that fourth-year students can work out the passage on their own and also enough passages so that they get a good overall idea of the structure of Lucretius' poem. The variety of compared passages (from Empedocles to Stephen Hawking) renders most of my homemade handouts obsolete. Finally, Catto's questions...invite opinions on Lucretius' thoughts and methods of explanation and illustration. She has made an already relevant poem accessible to younger and intermediate students. --Elinor S. Wright

This is a good book. Those who wish to give second and third-year college students of Latin a good sampling of the De rerum natura, would do well to give this text their consideration. Following in the tradition of other learning texts offered by Bolchazy-Carducci, Catto's book offers the student not only a full sampling of the poem, but also an abundance of notes, vocabulary, and, perhaps most noteworthy of all, a florilegium of relevant passages selected from classical and non-classical authors that bear upon the particular Luretian passages to which they are attached. It is this combination of features which makes the book worthy of serious examination by anyone who intends to introduce students to Lucretius and his important poem. --C. A. Hoffman, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

Those who teach Lucretius to undergraduates as I have may find themselves wishing as I did for a volume of excerpts that provides the student with linguistic and intellectual aids for translating and comprehending this difficult but magnificent Roman poet without the spoon feeding that vitiates so many heavily annotated school texts. They need look no further than this book, a thoughtful edition of key selections from the poet prepared by Bonnie Catto.

Bonnie Catto's seventeen-page introduction is... a treasure trove for the teacher.

The passages are so chosen that the student has a comprehensive sampler of both Lucretian purple passages as well as the more technical passages of philosophical and scientific exegesis.

I wish that it had been available when I taught Lucretius, and I wish more ancient authors were so splendidly served. --Richard Moorton, Connecticut College, New England Classical Journal

Endeavors into Latin
By Y. Zemmel
If you want a book which will give you a decent introduction into the work of Lucretius (in the original Latin, of course), as well as plenty of help with deciphering the lines, this is the perfect book. Check the dimensions on this book, it was quite a bit larger than what I expected when it came in the mail: it is the size of a 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper, with very clear font on the actual Latin lines, with complete glosses for almost every word on the facing page. Lucretius brings up the Epicuranean aspects of existence in his work--through beautiful language. This book makes that accessible to almost anyone. (It is also meant to function as a follow-up to Ecce Romani I and II. This may give you insight to the difficulty of the language: it is AP, or Latin III material, but can also--in conjunction with other texts--can serve as a great college text.)

a crime
By Alexandra L. Daly
Only purchase this text if you are at the beginning to low intermediate level in Latin, as otherwise you may feel your intelligence insulted. Even at the lower level, be warned-- this is not DRN as Lucretius wrote it. Catto omits many key passages (including one of the most beautiful, i.230-1), glosses nearly every word (and not always well or even correctly), and overwhelmingly comments on poetic devices rather than more useful information (e.g., allusions). I found most offensive her modernization of Lucretius' deliberate archaisms (-ai rather than -ae 1st genitive singular ending, -os rather than -us 2nd nom singular ending, etc.), vitiating the Ennian feel and singular beauty of the verse. Her extensive (and in fact very useful) introduction discusses these and its many other eccentricities, so her emendations are not only irreverent but also unnecessary. For inconceivable reasons my university professor mandated this text, but I invariably deferred to the Loeb and Cyril Bailey's commentary. You're much better off with the full, unaltered text at any level. Yes, it is a difficult poem, but that does not mean we should dilute it. durum: sed levius fit patientia.......

Beyond Courage (Newly Revised), by Dorothy Cave

Bataan, the last bastion stemming the Japanese tidal wave across the Pacific, was about to fall. In the midst of crashing bombs and depleted stores, the vastly outnumbered lines broke and commands disintegrated. Only one unit, 'Old Two Hon'erd,' a small band of New Mexico National Guardsmen, remained intact. With only rifles, a few rounds of ammunition, and an unshakable esprit de corps, they prepared to die but not surrender. In her award-winning history, Dorothy Cave follows the members of a small unit who played a key role in this pivotal moment in history. They were the first unit to fire when the Japanese struck. They guarded the bridges of the strategic retreat as all others crossed into Bataan to make the now-famous stand. They were the last to lay down arms, and did so only when ordered by the high command. Then followed the Death March, starvation, and brutality of Japanese POW camps and Hell Ships. Laughing at their captors, they sabotaged the Japanese war machine at every chance. They were still fighting in Uncle Sam's army and only half returned. Amid human depravity, described in graphic detail, they kept their faith, honor, and a profound love of their country. Theirs is a legacy of courage and something beyond.

Amazon.com Review
A vivid narrative of the men of New Mexico's 200th and 515th Coast Artillery (AA) units. Cave skillfully tells a story of hardship, bravery, unspeakable treatment, and a never-dying belief that their country would liberate them. They were the first unit to fire on the enemy in the Philippines and the last organized unit to lay down their arms when surrender came.

Focuses on one doomed unit from New Mexico the 200th Reg.
By cdely@earthlink.net
Dorothy Cave has really done an excellent job of research and storytelling with this book. She was able to accuratly document the fate of many of the soildiers that were mobilized in 1940 in New Mexico.
I hope that Dorothy Cave will write a second book on the 200th and include more of the research material that would mean so much to the relatives and decendents of the warriers of the 200th Regiment.
Since I was born in Silver City NM and am now a member of the New Mexico National Guard, I request that all new Officers assigned to my Battalion to read Beyond Courage so that they may better understand the importance that history may place on their contirbution to New Mexico and the United States.

American Heros display fine mettle amid gruesome horror
By Robert J. Wisner
When I first moved to New Mexico in 1963, I became aware that many of the troops on the Bataan Death March came from New Mexico. They used to have an annual reunion here in Las Cruces, and I met a few of those men.
This book is by a professor of history at Eastern New Mexico University, who is I think a relative of one of the men on the march. The book entails the experiences of the 200th and 515th Coast Artiliary units, which were based in New Mexico.
I had always imagined that the worst part of their ordeal was the 60-mile forced march (and at war's end in 1945, I traversed that 60 miles in a jeep, a truly terrible ride in the Philippine heat and humidity). But far worse were the trips those heros made in the holds of enemy cargo vessels. They were put in the holds, so crowded that everyone had to stand, where the human urine and excrement simply dropped to the deck for everyone to stand in, and where people died standing up. The cruelty was worse than anyone could possibly imagine.
These units were the first to fire on the Japs and the last to lay down their arms when surrender came. And you learn of the espionage these guys performed when doing their slave labor in the factories and the mines of Japan and Manchuria. Such labor, and the treatment forced on the prisoners, were in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions, of which Japan was a signatory.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The author is a superb writer.

By Kaye Jordan
This revision is a better organized than the first edition. I don't know if the word "enjoyable" is an applicable description of the contents, since it deals with such horrific events in American history. Being from New Mexico, I recognized some of the names mentioned in the book, some of whom I did not know had been in Bataan. My uncle died in that prison camp and it was interesting, although devastating, knowing some of what he experienced. I wish those people who think our country acted as the "bad guys" in the war with Japan would read this book.

Ageless Adobe, History and Preservation in Southwestern Architecture, by Jerome Iowa

The American Southwest possesses an extraordinary depth of cultural heritage and much of its history is preserved in its architecture. Particularly prominent in the region's man-made landscape are the historic structures made from the earth itself: adobe. Attention has turned to ways of preserving and maintaining the old buildings of the Southwest partly because of the growing national interest in historic preservation. However, in the Southwest there has also been an increased awareness of the inherent viability of native architecture. Adobe structures present unique challenges and require special treatment and until now, much of that information has been unpublished. Ageless Adobe provides practical details on methods of preservation and maintenance for old adobe buildings. The over 200 illustrations in the book along with directions on 'how-to' will enable the do-it-yourself home owner as well as the professional architect or contractor to plan and carry out renovation. The author presents solutions to the problems of keeping an historic structure intact while repairing it and making it 20th century livable. The issue of energy conservation is discussed at length and the premise of the book is that historic integrity does not have to be sacrificed for energy efficiency. Rehabilitation is always preferable, usually possible and often more profitable than demolition.

The real deal
By Willa
If you are interested in preservation, vernacular architecture, architectural history, or just in understanding the beautiful and functional adobe buildings of northern New Mexico, this book is an absolute must-read. I've lived in Santa Fe my whole life, and have always loved adobe buildings, but I still learned a lot from it. What it's not: a superficial collection of pretty pictures to show you how to make your faux-dobe house look all "Santa Fe Style".

Also, if you are thinking of stuccoing your adobe house, put down the trowel and read this first. Please?

Interesting, but buy the Cornerstone book
By Spark
After a more-than-usually useful description of architectural styles of adobe structures, this book has chapters on restoring walls, roofs, porches and woodwork and doors and windows. Missing is what to do about floors. Chapter 12 (3 pages) is about adaptation and additions including solar energy. Page 117 has a detailed illustration about the difficulties of adding insulation to a flat dirt roof.

Good story, fairly easy Greek, superb format
By Markos
[[VIDEOID:moGBXMX5J1D7MP]]In this video I tell you, in Ancient Greek, why I like this edition of Daphnis and Chloe.

Click the link to the left to watch it, and then read the rest of this review.

I am a strong advocate of these type of user-friendly Greek texts. I think Clyde Pharr invented this format, with the Greek text on one page and glosses and brief grammatical notes underneath and on opposite pages. Helm's Apology and the recent books by Geoffrey Steadman continue in this tradition, and Byrne and Cueva here shine in the format.

This text has a super large, very readable font for the Greek text. The glosses include the principle parts for verbs. The grammatical notes are short and to the point and Byrne and Cueva give you literal translations for almost every tough piece of Greek. This makes ready the text a pleasure and not a grind. Go to LSJ if a word interests you, otherwise, keep on reading.

The key to these types of texts is to try to figure out the Greek before you look at the helps. Steadman suggests that before you look at a gloss, you should say out loud an English guess. To me, these editions are very helpful in REREADING the Greek. My goal is always to reread the text often enough so that I no longer need the helps. But the helps make this much easier to attain.

As to Longus' work itself, let me compare it to Chariton's Callirhoe, which I read earlier in the year. Longus Greek is a little harder, a little less pure Koine with more Attic touches, but his Greek is also more interesting and prettier than Chariton's. The plots are similar: Boy meets Girl, Boy and Girl undergo separation and trial, Boy marries Girl and all live happily ever after. Paradoxically, much less happens plot-wise in Longus than in Chariton, but Longus is somehow more pleasant to read, with a pastoral, open-air setting verus Chariton's urban and political intrigue. Longus is more poetic than Chariton, perhaps less realistic, but more playful.

There is something disturbingly un-democratic about the theme of Daphis and Chole, which is that the aristocratic nature will in the end be revealed and triumph. But the text is above all fun. Its Greek is close enough to the NT to make it a good text for those learning NT Greek. Highly recommended.

Not the most useful
By A. S. Drury
One excellent feature of this edition: diagrams of complicated periods (long Ciceronian sentences).

Otherwise, not the most useful. E.g., the vocabulary section gives all possible meanings of a word, which anybody can get from William Whitaker's WORDs. I prefer the approach of Walter Englert in Cicero: Pro Caelio, which is more specific.

Taken from Chapter 3: The Christmas tree The early Victorian tree The early Victorian Christmas trees were decorated with fruits, nuts, pine cones, and small homemade gifts. Tiny hand-stitched dolls and children's mittens added a personal touch, and treats such as small toys and sugar cookies delighted children. Hand-dipped candles shone from the branches, which were draped with strings of popcorn and berries. A star twinkled from the top of the tree to remind everyone of the Christmas star that led the Wise Men to Jesus.

Victorian Party
By Thomas J. Thompson
Victorian Christmas by Kalman and Bedell is a small volume in pages(32) but packed full of information with beautiful illustrations. It could be read by a teen or adult or even an older elementary student. We used the information to make our Dickens Christmas Party more in keeping with the period.

Great for lovers of Ancient Rome
By Sherry Christie
As a historical novelist, I found this book a great source of contemporary comments about various sites in the ancient city. Where else would you find out that Agrippa originally wanted to name the Pantheon for Augustus, but Augustus declined? If you're planning to visit and/or write about ancient Rome, Rome Alive and the Oxford Archaeological Guide to Rome make an excellent pair of guidebooks.

Bring the past to the lap of an enthusiastic Romanophile
By Dennis J. Lendon
Being not only a teacher of Ancient Roman History, but also an avid tourist of the eternal city, I found this book highly readable and very practical. It is a valuable resource for the teacher, student and adventurer all in one volume. This book is a must for anyone who intends more than a cursory few hours in Rome, not on a tourist bus, but by navigating the winding streets of Rome with a bottle of water, a good pair of walking shoes and this book as your guide. This book really brings the marble glories of Republican and Imperial Rome back to life. It is also a must for the student and teacher as the author has collected a dazzling array of ancient sources on a myriad of important structures that have contributed to the western psyche of what Rome was like.

Now Silence, A Novel of World War II, by Tori Warner Shepard

In this superbly researched WWII novel, award-winning writer, Tori Warner Shepard, captures the mood of remote Santa Fe, New Mexico as it waits out WWII for the return of her men held in Japanese prison camps. POW Melo Garcia has survived the Bataan Death March in the Philippines but his brother and father have not. Along with 1,500 other American prisoners, he is diseased, tortured, starved, and used as slave labor in a condemned coal mine outside of Nagasaki, Japan. Melo is the last living hope to continue his family's centuries old line for his war-widowed mother, Nicasia, who prays for his return alongside his sweetheart, LaBelle. They have received no reliable news since the surrender to the enemy in 1942. The novel is as much a story of the men's heroism as it is of their Hispanic community which after Pearl Harbor was a distant and a safe refuge from the war, sought out by the US Government as an internment camp for 2,000 Japanese Isseii barely a mile from the office of the top-secret Manhattan Project that was developing the atomic bomb to be dropped 20 miles from Melo's prison camp. Add to the mix FBI and counter-intelligence agents, Gringo fanatics opposed to Roosevelt, Melo's novia LaBelle and Phyllis, the redheaded bombshell, who challenges her. And Melo himself with his mother who embodies gracia, a word that does not translate. This gripping exposition of the Japanese atrocities is even-handed and the characters and personalities on the home front will haunt your memory.

Review
In Now Silence, longtime Santa Fe resident Tori Warner Shepard depicts Santa Fe as it was while in the grips of World War II. The city's residents await the return of sons, brothers, and sweethearts, some of whom have perished in the Bataan Death March, others of whom survived only to slave away in a coal mine outside Nagasaki, Japan. As she shifts between describing scenes in Santa Fe and Japan, Shepard depicts the heroism of both the soldiers and the women they left behind. Shepard grew up in war-shattered Japan, where her stepfather oversaw Coca-Cola bottling plants. Moving to Santa Fe in the 1970s, she found that, despite its distance from the battlefield, the city had been shaped just as much by the war as had the places of her childhood. Although the reader can easily be swept away by the thoughtful character portrayals and the compelling narrative, it remains clear throughout the novel that Shepard has paid diligent attention to historical details. -- --New Mexico Magazine, January, 2008

Santa Fe, New Mexico, World War II. This is the story of the women left behind waiting for the men in their lives to return home from the Japanese Prisoner of War Camps; men who will not be the same as when they left. There's Anissa, widow and local leader of the cult like I AM group with invoking St. Germain to stop the 'friendly fire'. Her feud with her husband's former lover, Phyllis, only fuels her madness. Nicasia, her husband and son killed in the war, clings to the hope that her remaining son, Melo Garcia, will return safely from the POW camp where she had last heard he was still alive. Needy LaBelle, Melo's novia (fiancée) lives with her intended mother-in-law, never quite in touch with the reality of what lies ahead. Their stories are interspersed with the story of Melo and his friend Senio Lopez as they struggle to survive the Bataan Death March and the torture and hideous conditions of the Japanese camp where they are being held. These camp passages are dark and disturbing and altogether real. They make for compelling, if not pleasant, reading and are essential to the story. Will they live to return to Santa Fe? Will the women survive the wait? Author Tori Warner Shepard has given us a glimpse into life as it was and, we hope, will never be again in a sleepy little New Mexico town called Santa Fe. Shepard has taken the profane and the faithful, the serious and the amusing, and woven together a story that should be a must read for all of us so we will never forget. --Sabra Brown Steinsiek, Readingnewmexico.com, November, 2008

Our experiences shape who we are. In the case of author Tori Warner Shepard, her early life laid out a path for her that could only be expressed properly in art and in writing. Having grown up in the tumult of World War II, she experienced the chaos through the confusion of the Pearl Harbor attacks and the unrelated loss of her father. With her mother remarried at the conclusion of the War, Shepard moved with her family to Japan as her stepfather oversaw the installation of Coca Cola bottling plants. She was dejected and forlorn, ripped away from her family in a foreign land that had been ravaged by war. But life has a funny way of making our darkest experiences useful and Shepard's early life has, indeed, proven to be useful. With her latest, Now Silence: A Novel of World War II, Shepard utilizes her experiences of being uprooted to tell an engaging story of the women living during the War. Couched in a mass of research and history, Shepard's novel has a broad epic feel as it pours out across the pages. Her characters are rich and convincing, her prose is pleasantly vigorous, and the informative research behind the pages of fiction adds a dark and almost sinister element to the war. Now Silence is, by and large, about two women: Phyllis and Anissa. Their stories form the centrepiece to the tale, granting a balancing point on which all of the other stories rotate. Phyllis and Anissa have one thing in common: a man. Phyllis, redheaded bombshell that she is, is introduced as she loses Russell, a man whom she loves dearly. Russell is still married to Anissa, a crazed cult-obsessed nutbag dragging her feet on the divorce. As Russell passes on in an accident, Phyllis undertakes a journey to confront Anissa and to give her Russell's shotgun. The trip takes Phyllis through military land, where she meets and suitably greets a host of men in uniform. Meanwhile, Anissa is still as nutty as ever and her life in Santa Fe with the fiery LaBelle is filled with attempts at bringing new converts to her strange religion. LaBelle, meanwhile, awaits news from Melo, who is in a camp outside of Nagasaki. The treat here is in how Shepard writes her characters. They are bold, energetic, and electrifying. Never venturing into mere stereotype territory, she writes her women with beauty and uprightness (even the nutbags) and weaves her characters around each other with precision. The dialogue is crisp and clever, allowing each individual time to breathe and exist on the pages. Along with the characters, the settings and the historical context are appealing. Shepard has spared no expense researching her book, filling pages with facts and the untold stories of the War. Despite this, Shepard remains equitable in her approach and is never preachy. This is no anti-war novel; this is simply a novel about life. The backdrop adds to the compelling and pressing nature of the stories, but there is no argument against or for the War. Shepard's Now Silence is an enthralling piece. It is intense, sexy, poignant, dark, humorous, and altogether engaging from the opening page to the final moments. --Jordan Richardson, blogcritics.org, October 22, 2008

Now Silence: Pacific Front of WWII
By S. Agusto-Cox
Tori Warner Shepard's Now Silence, A Novel of World War II takes place in the midst of WWII around the time Pearl Harbor is bombed, many U.S. military personnel are held in POW camps, and Japanese Americans are corralled in internment camps across the western United States, particularly in New Mexico.

Readers are first introduced to a self-centered, superficial Phyllis soon after the death of her fiance, Russell. Russell's soon-to-be ex-wife, Anissa, lives out west and had refused to sign the divorce papers, and Phyllis has hated her for many years and obsessed about this woman and the role she played in Russell's life.

After a great deal of build up regarding these characters' animosity toward one another, the confrontation nearly midway in the book is not as explosive as readers may expect. Phyllis is a complicated character, just like Anissa, and readers may find it difficult to wrap their arms around these characters' actions, though Anissa is a bit easier to get a handle on than Phyllis, who makes her way across America from Florida to New Mexico by riding a bicycle to make herself seem worthy of awe, only to break down and "sleep" her way across the nation.

The pacing of this novel is slow and awkward in places, but the best sections of this novel are in the POW camps of Japan. Readers will be introduced to Melo and Senio, who rely on each other for survival, with the help of Doc Matson. The brutality and uncertainty of their lives is mirrored in the lives of Anissa's neighbor Nicasia and her soon-to-be daughter-in-law LaBelle, who wait endlessly for word of their loved ones.

In just a little over 300 pages, Shepard weaves in a number of storylines and illustrates the environment present at home and abroad. Readers should be cautioned that there are some graphic scenes and sexual content in Now Silence.

Overall, readers will enjoy what they learn about the Pacific front and the characters are well-developed, even if Phyllis is a bit tough to take most of the time. While readers may find there is too much detail about Phyllis's earlier exploits and some of the sections about the WWII events are told rather than shown, Now Silence, A Novel of World War II sheds light on the Pacific Front of World War II from Americans on both sides of the ocean.

This is absolutely incredddddddddible!!!!!!!
By T. warner
"I loved this novel. The author's sense of history (WW II in the Pacific) and place (particularly Santa Fe) is stunning. The book portrays a fascinating mix of empathetic characters, especially the Hispanic ones such as Senio, Melo, LaBelle and Nicasia, with the more farcical Anglos like Anissa and Phyllis. Just as I've always been struck by D.H. Lawrence's believable portraits of female characters, so I'm impressed by the author's realistic sense of her male characters' inner life and dialogue. The structure of the novel, with its alternating chapters set in Florida, the Philippines and Santa Fe, economically telegraphs place and time to the reader. I won't give away the very moving ending. If you're looking for a compelling story that never flags, and/or are interested in WW II, the Philippines, Japanese and American history, Santa Fe--and a multicultural mix of characters--this book is for you. Do not buy it if you're not interested in sex, war, death, family and love."

Now Silence is a fascinating read, hard to put down!
By Fred Warner
This book really gets into the hearts and minds of the people during WW II.
I had no idea the South-Western Hispanics were chosen specifically for the Philippines, or what it was like for soldiers when Macarthur bailed to Australia.
And the lives when they return home... very intense.
And it is written so well, not like a dry history book.
I definitely recommend it.
