'[Latin for the New Millennium] is the best secondary textbook that I have ever used. Having used everything from Jenney to Ecce to Latin for Americans to Cambridge, I really appreciate using Latin for the New Millennium for a few reasons. First, it is clear in terms of terminology. Grammatical terms, sometimes troublesome for students new to Latin, are explained thoroughly and used copiously. Additionally, authentic Latin is referenced from the earliest stages of Latin. Students meet authors and have a good overview of the changes in Rome, in literature, politics, and society. Finally, I think it is the best preparation for the AP while still attending to conversation and oral Latin. Not only am I confident that I can finish the 1st year text in a year, but I am also confident that my students will have a better understanding of the Romans as well as their language and our own. Having the built-in support in the online resource center is also valuable and something that I would like to see us use and develop as we mature in the series. From a teaching standpoint, it is so helpful to have not only the resource center but also all of the ancillaries. With Latin for the New Millennium there is no need for teachers to re-invent the wheel each and every year. Support (Pedagogical, technological, and ancillary) is built into the series and into to system as a whole to allow teachers to use, borrow, and adapt what they need in terms of worksheets, explanations, vocabulary lists, and study guides.

Method has promise. Could use some tweaking.

I currently use this book in a middle school classroom, and I am about evenly split on its high and low points. I am aware that it is intended for high school and college students, but it is the text that was in place when I stepped in, and I will continue to use it as a curriculum template so our program is in line with our upper school's curriculum.
The text is meant, I believe, to be a hybrid of the strict grammar-translation method, and the intuitive approach. It is likely best suited to high school students, as I have found it to be lacking in developmentally appropriate readings for my students, and college students or adults might be bored with it. One of the other reviewers praised it for being a good self-teaching tool, and I can see how it would work well for someone who is very motivated.
PROS: Excellent resource for teaching/learning Latin as a living language. As a supporter of spoken Latin in the classroom, I have found this text's greatest source of riches to be the sections of Oral Latin. Students can learn conversational phrases and terms for things that are prevalent in modern classrooms--they have even included Latin words for things like dry erase marker, and white board. This helps teachers to conduct lessons in Latin; if the teacher doesn't know the appropriate phrases, grammatical terms and sample questions in Latin can be found in the teacher's edition.
Each chapter offers sections on culture, history, and mythology. My students have loved learning about Cicero, and mythology is always a hit.
The chapters provide a logical flow (for the most part) between grammatical concepts such as the various uses of the ablative, adjectives, declensions, and the passive voice.
CONS: Each chapter offers only one reading, which is heavily glossed. In my experience, daily reading is essential to learning a foreign language, and this method is a bit lacking. Teachers who are approved through the Bolchazy website can download one supplemental reading per chapter, but I have found these supplements to be very difficult for students to comprehend. Starting with Chapter 4, the gap between the concepts as they're presented throughout the chapter, and what a student must master in order to read the supplements, is huge. Hopefully this will improve with time, as the authors are very productive, and this seems to be a text system that is still evolving.
Additionally, the chapter readings are often adaptations of "real" works written by Cicero, Catullus, etc. This is something that seems wonderful on the surface, but can be ill-received by students who are either too young to be able to relate to the subject matter, or who have had no exposure to ancient history. What I've witnessed is that they get excited about reading an excerpt of Julius Caesar's de bello Gallico; but end up frustrated because even though they know what all the words mean, ultimately they can't infer from the context what is going on. As their teacher, I guide them in the right direction, but I see how the frustration just kills their zeal and confidence.
Students do not learn the 3rd conjugation until Chapter 8, and the 4th conjugation until Chapter 9. This may prove to be problematic if the teacher has any interest in having the students take the National Latin Exam, depending on the pace of the class.
Vocabulary is scanty, adding a total of up to 15-20 words per chapter (including conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositions). If a teacher wants to make supplementary worksheets or exercises for students, as I have had to do with mine using this method, he or she has to teach the students supplementary vocabulary. Not that big a deal, but still extra effort on the part of the teacher.
Overall, this is a good text, but it is not my first recommendation for a teaching tool.

Great new textbook!!

If you are attempting to teach yourself Latin, I HIGHLY recommend this book. I've gone through Wheelock,Jenney, Gummer and Henle and I think this and Henle are the best. Henle has the advantage overall because you can get texts with all exercise answers for Latin I-IV. For just a first year learning experience, however, this New Millenium text is the best especially if you buy the teacher's edition to get answers for all the exercises. This is a great addition to the field. This book has great graphics and does a nice job of integrating Roman history and culture. It uses some of Wheelock's techniques in introducing readers to real Latin prose early. It does not attempt to cover as much ground as quickly as Wheelock does but I view that as a positive. I'm looking forward to buying the second year New Millenium text.

A must for re-enforcing class concepts. Integrates well with text.

The review I just wrote was actually meant for the textbook. These comments therefore reference the workbook. I like the diversity of kinds of exercises presented. Plenty of choices to choose from depending on student's needs and competencies. Great ancillary for the basal text.
