God's Warrior: Father Albert Braun, OFM, 1889-1983 - Last of the Frontier Priests, by Dorothy Cave

Fellow priests called his ministry ''just short of a miracle.'' A superior castigated him as ''an adventurer,'' Apaches and migrant Mexicans claimed him ''one of us.'' To his fellow soldiers he was ''a man's man.'' Of himself he chuckled, ''I ve been in mischief all my life.'' He was Father Albert Braun, OFM, in turn mule-headed, explosive, or penitent. Vigorously outspoken, he once charged a group of august bishops to ''get off your butts and out among the people.'' His sense of duty was profound, his humor crusty. He arrived in New Mexico as missionary to the Mescalero Apaches just after Pancho Villa's raid, was a highly decorated chaplain in both World Wars, and after World War II he participated in the top-secret birth of the first hydrogen bomb on a south Pacific atoll. Drawing on archival and military records, letters, memoirs, and interviews, Dorothy Cave chronicles the amazing life of this last of the frontier priests from his birth in the lusty, brawling California of 1889, to his death and burial in the church he built his beloved Mescaleros in 1983. This book is at once a biography and a kaleidoscopic history of the tumultuous times in which he lived. From it there emerges the inspiring saga of a man who changed thousands of lives with faith, humor, dedication, and a generous dash of pure hard-headed cussedness.

About the Author
Dorothy Cave spent much of her childhood exploring with her geologist father the isolated villages and mountains of northern New Mexico, a practice she continues today. Although her formal education was at Agnes Scott College and the Universities of Colorado and Wyoming, she feels her true education has come from these remote but rapidly vanishing hamlets and pueblos and from the soil-rooted wisdom of those who live in them. Cave has traveled widely, danced with the Atlanta Ballet, acted, and taught. She is the author of two histories: Beyond Courage, which won the New Mexico Presswomen's Zia Award, and Four Trails to Valor, both from Sunstone Press. Her two novels, Mountains of the Blue Stone and Song on a Blue Guitar were also published by Sunstone Press. Cave served as historical consultant for two documentary films: Colors of Courage, produced by Scott Henry and E. Anthony Martinez for the University of New Mexico's Center for Regional Studies; and for Aaron Wilson's award-winning A New Mexico Story, based largely on her Beyond Courage. She appears in both films as narrator/commentator. Beyond Courage also inspired composer Steven Melillo's musical opus of the same title, acclaimed on two continents.

Great Biography
By John Thurston
This biography was thoroughly researched, chronologically organized, historically placed into context and interestingly presented from a realistic and personal perspective. While it was as good a biographical project as I have ever read, and I've read many, it probably won't market a universal appeal. They won't likely make a movie from it. Nevertheless, this man led a spectacularly adventurous and full life devoting himself in classical Franciscan fashion to everyone, especially those held in low esteem and forgotten by Anglo-American society in general.

Albert Braun lived such a unique and complete life. He was strong, adventurous and a giver. Above all, he gave hope, especially to the hopeless. He gave it to the Apache Indians in Mescalero, New Mexico shortly after the end of the "cowboy and Indian" wars. He gave it to the fighting, wounded and dying soldiers in the trenches when he became an Army chaplain in World War I. He gave it to the prisoners of war of the Japanese in World War II, rising above his own miseries to give comfort, aid, and inspiration to others in the worst human conditions imaginable. He gave it to the Mexican migratory working families in the barrios of Phoenix. He always went to the people. He did not wait for the people to come to him. He received the Silver Star for gallantry in action in each of the World Wars, saving lives under enemy fire and being wounded in action himself. He was a spy for the Order, crossing into Mexico to report on the abuses of the authorities and aiding the persecuted clergy. He established a Franciscan seminary for the Mexicans at Mescalero and El Paso. This was a man of enormous distinction and courage.

He built churches and organized parishes. He was known to challenge authority from time to time. He drank. He was a lousy driver. When engaged in important endeavors, he still found time and energy to teach catechism to the children.

As a prisoner of war, he learned to become a terrific thief at the risk of being tortured (as he occasionally was) and killed (which he narrowly avoided on more than one occasion). While starving, he shared the fruits (literally) of his labor (stealing) with others.

He loved to laugh. He had a tremendous sense of humor and big ears, probably because he was a good listener.
Some of his one-liners were priceless, even in his latter years:

1. "God is good to us. When we get old, He destroys our memory so we don't worry about the sins of our youth." (page 476)

2. When asked once what OFM meant, he replied, "Out For Money. God is good to us. He knew I couldn't handle money, so He never gave me any." (page 476)

3. In the "old folks home," "the sisters provide music, we are served a soft drink, cookies and candy ... I tell the sister, `this is Happy Hour, a soft drink does not make anyone happy,' so she gets me a glass of wine. I thank her and say, `In half an hour, I will begin to feel happy." (pages 476-477)

4. "The reason so many people come to me for confession is they know I can't hear well." (page 469)

5. My favorite was in response to a woman friend who told the padre she aspired to emulate St. Barbara, to which he replied, "to imitate your saint would be very difficult. She was not only a virgin, but a martyr as well." (page 468)

The Silver Star is a very distinguished award for valor not generously awarded, particularly to unarmed chaplains. He experienced being under fire on the front lines of battle in two separate wars, neither of which were as horrific as his three years under the Japanese as a POW.

The text is cited well with footnotes, references and a thorough index.

This is a very good story about Father Abaun. Dorothy Cave is a superior writer of Word War Two books about events and people. I would recommend this book as informative reading to anyone.

A Giant of a Man
By Lobo
I'm somewhat personally connected to Fr Al Braun, being named for him. Ms Cave did a fine job of examining this complex, dynamic man who influenced so many lives in the southwestern U.S. He was a great man, who exceeds the cliche "larger than life."
