Although its walls have changed many times, its doors and the encounters with those doors hold stories known and told and others not yet revealed. In the Archives, there are thousands of doors (4,481) that open to a time of kings and popes, of inquisition and revolution. 'These archives,' writes Ralph Emerson Twitchell, 'are by far the most valuable and interesting of any in the Southwest.' Many of these documents were given a number by Twitchell, small stickers that were appended to the first page of each document, an act of heresy to archivists and yet these stickers have now become part of the artifact. These are the doors that Ralph Emerson Twitchell opened at the dawn of the 20th century with a key that has served scholars, policy-makers, and activists for generations. In 1914 Twitchell published in two volumes The Spanish Archives of New Mexico, the first calendar and guide to the documents from the Spanish colonial period.

Volume Two of the two volumes focuses on the Spanish Archives of New Mexico, Series II, or SANM II. These 3,087 documents consist of administrative, civil, military, and ecclesiastical records of the Spanish colonial government in New Mexico, 1621-1821. The materials span a broad range of subjects, revealing information about such topics as domestic relations, political intrigue, crime and punishment, material culture, the Camino Real, relations between Spanish settlers and indigenous peoples, the intrusion of Anglo-Americans, and the growing unrest that resulted in Mexico's independence from Spain in 1821.

As is the case with Volume One, these documents tell many stories. They reflect, for example, the creation and maintenance of colonial society in New Mexico; itself founded upon the casting and construction of colonizing categories. Decisions made by popes, kings and viceroys thousands of miles away from New Mexico defined the lives of everyday citizens, as did the reports of governors and clergy sent back to their superiors. They represent the history of imperial power, conquest, and hegemony.

Indeed, though the stories of indigenous people and women can be found in these documents, it may be fair to assume that not a single one of them was actually scripted by a woman or an American Indian during that time period. But there is another silence in this particular collection and series that is telling. Few pre-Revolt (1680) documents are contained in this collection. While the original colonial archive may well have contained thousands of documents that predate the European settlement of New Mexico in 1598, with the Pueblo Indian Revolt of 1680, all but four of those documents were destroyed. For historians, the tragedy cannot be calculated. Nevertheless, this absence and silence is important in its own right and is a part of the story, told and imagined. About the Author
Kris Hotvedt, a native of Wautoma, Wisconsin has lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico since 1969. She studied at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, received a BFA degree from the San Francisco Art Institute and her MFA from the Instituto Allende in Mexico. An artist of strong professional commitment and identification with Native American and Hispanic culture, Hotvedt has exhibited widely throughout the United States in both group and solo shows. Her work is represented in public and private collections. She has been art editor of Pembroke magazine and taught art classes at St. John's College in Santa Fe. In addition, she maintains a schedule of lectures, demonstrations and workshops. The woodblock print has become her principal medium, a medium that seems to best capture her unique interpretation of the Southwest scene.

Life on the Reservation

I enjoyed both the art work and the text in this short but well-written book. It certainly gives an outsider real information about the lives of Indians living on the reservation today. MS Hotvedt is able to convey in her block prints something of what the dances and traditions must mean to these people. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in contemporary Indian life.

WONDERFUL WOODCUTS!

These wonderful woodcuts and related text take the reader into a world vastly different from mainstream culture. The images are taken from Kris Hotvedt's own experiences as she partakes in Pueblo and Navajo life. Owning several of the actual color woodcuts depicted in the book has given our family great pleasure. We especially love "The Coming of the Rivermen" (Cochiti Pueblo), a tradition not observed in any other New Mexico pueblo. This book is a highly recommended look at Pueblo and Navajo traditons as they are still practiced today.

Too Many Words, too Little Math

This book was a gift for our son from his grandmother. Had I seen it, I would have never bought it. It has many more words than numbers, although it claims to be a math book. The stories are extremely boring and the problems are not at all creative. If these are supposed to be "inventive excercises", I can't imagine how real textbooks are. No wonder so many kids are bad at math.

The math problems are not very advanced. My 7 year-old son has no problem with the math, just some of the voacbulary. Although, he is good at math, I think this book is too easy for grades 6-8.

A great addition to your library

I got this as a gift and am very glad that I did. While not a complete identification tool like RIC or SEARS, this is an awesome book for someone starting out with an interest in Imperial coins. It provides detailed inscriptions, RIC and SEARS numbers for the coins pictured, then provides an index of inscriptions and subjects. Truly a great catalog of a collection I want to see in person. Worth the price.

In Words and Ideas, editor William J. Dominik has created an introductory Classics curriculum within the context of a vocabulary builder and beginning etymology textbook. Not only is Words and Ideas multipurpose in scope, but it is also suitable for a variety of learning situations, from autodidacts yes, you can sit down on your own with Words and Ideas to homeschooling parents to regular high school or college teachers.

Supplementing each chapter of Dominik's Words and Ideas, are bibliographies, exercises, websites, and invaluable Word for Word cartoon strips. Words and Ideas can be read in almost any order or, if it's for personal interest, even randomly, but structured approaches would work better in the classroom. For this reason, Dominik suggests two structured approaches: either to focus first on the first three chapters to build up some basic understanding of word building before proceeding to the Greek and Roman culture and further word building sections or to study the first three chapters in conjunction with the remaining nine cultural chapters.

The first three chapters of Words and Ideas introduce word building, with essential, basic, explained terms like base, prefix, and suffix. Dominik explains the creation of hybrid words like sociology, which comes from a Latin base and a Greek ending, and the twisted paths by which Latin and Greek words find their way into our English vocabulary. Dominik says about sixty percent of words in common use in English are derived from Latin.... Dominik's writing style in this potentially confusing area is clear and precise.

Starting with Chapter 4, Dominik focused on Greco-Roman culture, the differences between Greece and Rome, and the essential words used to describe first mythology, then medicine, politics and law, commerce and economics, philosophy and psychology, and history. In the process, Dominik summarizes:
-the creation stories and major myths of the Greek gods and heroes
- the change from magic to reason-based medicine
-the development of the ancient city, democracy and the effect of Roman law on American and South African law
-financial systems and trade, including slavery and ancient machinery
-the concept of knowledge, with a quick look at individual pre-Socratics, Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates, the Stoic, Epicurean and Cynic philosophers, with a Freudian excursis, and finally
- the contributions made by historians to our knowledge of times past with a look at and occasional passage written by the ancient philosophers Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Polybius, Josephus, Caesar, Sallust, Livy, and Tacitus.

Cartoons drive points home quickly and provide easily remembered anecdotes about etymology. Did you know the tree-filled area we know of as an arbor does not come from the Latin word for tree? The (translated into English) literary passages are short. Dominik makes ample use of tables, lists, and bullet points, with occasional illustrations. These techniques make Words and Ideas easy and appealing to use. To keep Words and Ideas short, there is no answer key. This should not be a problem if the student (and homeschooling or other teacher) reads the chapter carefully and keeps a dictionary with etymologies handy.

The first three chapters explain the basics of word building: he shows how specific nouns, verbs, and adjectives relate to each other and how words can be broken down into the base, prefix, and suffix. The subsequent chapters contain overviews of classical mythology, law, medicine, history, commerce, philosophy, and psychology each followed by tables of Enligh/American words relevant to that particular topic, all with their classical derivations. The arrangement of words into their subject disciplines is why the book is different from other etymological handbooks though there is an alphabetical index if you need it. The book is attractive, compact, and contains useful extras: bibliographies, related web-sites, lists of Latin/Greek phrases and reasonably amusing cartoons which serve to break up the text. Benefits of the Classics for All

This interactive book brings the enhanced vocabulary from studying Greek or Latin to everyone. Having taken Latin throughout high school, I find myself frequently using that Latin vocabulary to figure out the meanings of unfamiliar English words. From passing entrance exams to reading literature, knowing word roots is infinitely useful.
Words & Ideas builds vocabulary by explaining Latin and Greek roots of words in the context that they are used. First, the book teaches readers to identify roots, with derivatives, charts to fill in, and even clever comic strips. Later, the roots are grouped into sections such as "medicine," "commerce and economics," and "history," not only defining the roots, but also providing historical background and humorous anecdotes, along with websites that have more information. I heartily applaud the organization of this book-having the roots grouped by context, rather than alphabetically or randomly. This way, they are taught just how they will later be seen, in related sets. Moreover, the glimpses into Roman and Greek culture encourage readers not only to recognize and define the roots of words, but also to put these terms in better context. This is an innovative approach to vocabulary building, introducing roots in related groups.

I used this book for my classics class at UC Riverside. It was very helpful and all the info in this book helped me achieve a high grade. I will be starting Latin in the Fall. I know this book helped me prepare for the Latin series.

Today the name Gene Kloss, NA, is synonymous with copperplate etchings and when this book was first published by Sunstone Press in the early 80s, it quickly became a collector's item. No wonder because her limited edition prints are now becoming priceless on the art market. This 20th anniversary edition, the sole complete source of information on this outstanding artist, contains 81 black and white reproductions on 192 pages and includes a text by Gene's husband, poet and noted author Phillips Kloss. When Gene and Phillips Kloss first arrived in Taos, New Mexico, her first etching press, a sixty-pound machine, was installed at their camp in Taos Canyon by cementing it to a large rock. That press was eventually replaced by a 1,084 pound Sturges etching press purchased from a defunct greeting card company. With the years and the continual dedication came honors, national and international. The Smithsonian, the National Gallery, The Corcoran Gallery of Fine Art, the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as many others, house the works of Gene Kloss in their permanent collections. From her spare life on the eastern edge of Taos with neither water nor electricity, but plenty of firewood, kerosene and inspiration, Gene Kloss informed the art world of the special beauty inherent in southwestern images: the churches, the Indian faces, the mountains and valleys, the dances and intricate rhythms of life in a part of the United States that remains essentially unchanged to this day.

''The above quote exactly describes the work of longtime Taos artist Gene Kloss, whose beautifully produced book of etchings was published by Sunstone Press of Santa Fe.

Her work is the opposite of 'esoteric' and 'unpopular' and may therefore suffer in this age of fashion, novelty, hype and nervous chic. It may never set the Rio Grande on fire, but it is definitely a loving and valuable observation of Taos and the Southwest over some sixty years. As her husband Phillips Kloss notes in the introduction, 'The etchings in this volume constitute not only an aesthetic record but also a historical record. She has done over six hundred copper plate etchings, too many to be included in one book, and we have selected the ones that reveal the full scope of her work.'

Though etching certainly still exists, it is one of the mediums of reproduction that has undeniably suffered from the rise of photography. Not many artists today possess the finicky patience, the love of craft, and the dedication to pursue so difficult a medium. That Gene Kloss has produced such a large body of work is important to the overall history of Southwestern art.

She belongs, historically, to that honorable line of artists who worked when the term 'illustrator' was not a pejorative one, stretching clear back to Winslow Homer and including such distinguished American artists as John Sloan, Robert Henri, George Luks, George Bellows, Boardman Robinson and, not least, that factory full of women who worked for Currier & Ives.

If her work lacks the rhythmic sweep, the powerful fist of some of these other artists, many of her etchings display a quiet charm that is wholly unassuming.

In today's hype-economy, the prices that art commands on the market are a subject of constant discussion. Supposedly, the higher, the better. But I mean it as a compliment when I say that I wish Gene Kloss could have had the great good fortune of living when and where Hokusai (the 19th century Japanese printmaker whose name means 'old man mad about drawing') lived. It was a time when a print could be sold for the equivalent of $1.00, and thus reach a mass audience. Not a photo of a print in a book, mind you, but the thing itself. I discovered Gene Kloss' etchings while in the Santa Fe/ Taos area this summer. Her etchings of Western landscapes and Native Americans are so fine I would have no difficulty comparing them to Rembrandt's prints. Plus, some are still affordable. A two volume hard back limited edition (1000) raisonne' of Kloss' complete etchings has recently been compiled and published by A. Eugene Sanchez @ $198.00. It can be purchased through the Harwood Museum, Taos or The New Mexico Art Museum, Santa Fe. If you're at all interested, now is time to grab a copy. So, this Amazon book is now the second and older source about Gene and her fabulous prints.

Taken from Chapter 10: Sportswear The first bathing suitsIn the 1860s doctors began promoting bathing in lakes and oceans as an aid to good health. The first bathing suits for women were made up of baggy trousers, over which a large, belted cotton shirt was worn. A net or bathing cap kept the hair in place. Men's bathing suits consisted of shorts and a short-sleeved shirt.

I didn't have a problem with the book, per se, but I wish there were more detailed captioned to place the garments at a particular year or decade. Also missing was information about the type of person, urban vs. rural or wealthy vs. working class, would wear particular clothing. The American is mixed with the British and Continental with no distinctions made to geography. Most of the attire was geared towards what the upper classes wore, while scant attention is given to regular, everyday clothes of average people. That makes it much less useful for me as a teaching tool. I had hoped to be able to use as a reference for students to be able to use as a jumping off point for making their own illustrations of historic events or perhaps keying it to historical fiction, something beyond Little House.

The book has some high points, but I still wanted more. For example, the section on underwear will surely thrill kids of all ages, however, each garment is shown separately on a page with different types of underclothes from different styles of the century, so it was difficult even for me as an adult to exactly determine, for example, which type of drawers would go with which crinoline. My daughter loves to make paper dolls, but this book had little to offer that isn't done elsewhere in more detail... for example, with the American Girl paper doll collection.

Definitely lacking is the section on women's hairstyles. It is impossible to even figure out how to begin to re-create any of the hairstyles, which are only shown from one perspective, the front.

The section at the end of the book about living history really didn't fit. The reader is inspired to re-create period dress, but there just isn't enough meat in the reference sections of the book to do it.

A Place To Start Your Research Anyway

I asked myself- how did people in Thoreau's time actually dress and are there any record or lithographs of it? So I started here with this book to get a short overview. Wish it was wider in scope with other suggested works and diagrams and more sources. Niche area not of use to everyone. Could be of interest to history buffs and re-enactors and people who make clothes for movies or want to add some steam punk to their wardrobe.

Mary Elitch Long (1856-1936), was a successful business women and founder of Denver's famed Elitch Gardens. At the time, she was the only woman in the world running an amusement park, and was a role model in a time when women had fewer options. Mary and husband John Elitch Jr. purchased an apple orchard five miles north of Denver intending to grow fresh fruits and vegetables for their restaurant business. With Mary's love for children, flowers, animals, and the theater an ambitious dream was born. The apple orchard was transformed into Elitch's Zoological Gardens (Denver's first zoo), a wonderland of exotic animals, orchards, and gardens. Debra Faulkner grew up in Loveland, Colorado. She earned her BS in education from the University of Colorado and her Master in History from the University of Colorado at Denver. She is author of an award-winning biography of educator Emiliy Griffith and is co-author of a history of Colorado with Professor Thomas J. Noel.

I really was expecting a much more in depth story about Mary Elitch. This book was geared for elementary school kids.
