Some swim slowly by moving their fins. Most fish, however, use their fins only to steer and keep themselves from rolling onto their side as they swim. Almost all fish have a swim bladder, a balloon-like organ that helps them float. When a fish lets air into its swim bladder, its body rises in the water. When it lets in water, its body sinks.

Great book for teaching

This is a great book for teaching classification of animals to elementary aged students. It has all the phyla with good pictures and just enough information for this age group so they are not overwhelmed! I had lost my book so ordered another one. I can't teach classification without it!

Awesome Book!

I loved how thoroughly yet simply this book covered Animal classification for children. It is even informative to adults who need a refresher course. I loved the use of beautiful pictures for visual learners as well. A+ for organization and clarity. My daughter who is 10 and son 8 loved it as well. We homeschool and I felt this book had more to offer than many textbooks on this subject in a fund and dynamic way. I would recommend it for any school age child.

Material for this book was assembled by students participating in a seminar on Petronius conducted at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in the fall of 1974. The text of Petronius is basically that of Konrad Muller (Munich, 1961) with some changes on the basis of Martin S. Smith's 1975 Oxford University Press edition. Running vocabularies face each page of the text. When a word occurs a second time it is marked with an asterisk, a third time with two asterisks, and a fourth time with three asterisks. Then it is dropped from the vocabulary lists. A word marked with three asterisks may be found at the end of the book in a vocabulary. Certain basic words with which the reader should be familiar before beginning the text are not included in the running vocabulary and are given in the instructions for using the book (pp. 6-9). The general introduction provides a brief summary of the story line of the Satyricon. The five reading selections of unequal length are titled as follows: A Scene at the Market Place; Dinner at Trimalchio s;. The Matron of Ephesus; The Death of Lichas; Eating Human Flesh for Money.

The notes at the bottom of each page are helpful and copious. The running vocabulary allows the student to proceed rapidly through the text. The passages selected seem interesting and appealing. Expressions regarded traditionally as obscene or scatological are not omitted but are treated gingerly in the notes and vocabulary. For example on pp. 70-71 the expression frigori laecasin dico is translated in the notes as I say to hell with the cold. In the running vocabulary laecasin is explained as an obscene word either from the Greek laikazein (=Latin fornicari) or leichazein (=Latin fellare). This attractive edition, while obviously prepared for college students, would be useful for mature high school students. The format lends itself well to independent reading and study. The last two decades have seen a revival of interest in the Satyricon: Fellini's film, The Millionaire's Dinner Party, M. S. Smith's Oxford edition of the Cena and a complete Penguin translation. Nonetheless, this American edition could well fill a gap, offering as it does a selection of episodes (only 37 chapters of the original, rather fewer than the size of the book suggests) together with vocabularies and brief notes. Produced originally for (and in part by) students at the University of Massachusetts, it could find an English context in post-O-level reading of Latin literature.... but a class equipped with this book will find Petronius instructive and entertaining. --Ian Pratt, JACT

I include that quote as evidence against the case that Lawall has skipped ALL the naughty bits in his selections from the Satyricon. I think he's done an admirable job of leaving in enough lewdness to hint at what readers would find if they were to read all of the novel, while at the same time acknowledging the real constraints of designing a text acceptable for use in high schools. If you want to read the real smutty stuff, there are plenty of other sources for the complete Latin text of Petronius...

If, however, you want a text that's perfectly user-friendly for a third-year or higher Latin class (I've also used it with a fourth-year class: the notes and facing vocab make it possible for them to virtually sight-read the thing, and lay the groundwork for working on some of the skipped sections as handouts), this is great. Sometimes I feel he translates TOO much in the notes, but that's fine too: since a lot of his 'translations' are matters open to interpretation, they too provide a springboard for further discussion and arguing for alternate interpretations. His occasional mistakes -- or charming little quirks like his fussiness over the gender of the dog in the above quote -- fall in the same category: for a competent teacher they provide toeholds for climbing to other levels than just what Lawall presents. An excellent classroom text, and perfectly safe for reading at home by anybody capable of not accepting absolutely everything the editor tells us.

Same Lawall, different day.

Don't get me wrong. It's great to have a text of Petronius for study, especially at a level where young, impressionable students may read it. But look out: all of the really juicy bits were excised under Uncle Gilbert's sharp eye. The raciest anything gets is some innuendo in the Matrona Ephesi. All the good parts are gone, but so are the boring bits of the Cena Trimalchionis and a lot of incidental linking material. You get a nice, tame, classroom-ready version of a trashy Roman novel. Gil Lawall's edition is as mistake-ridden as all of his best work (Ecce Romani, &c.), but the fun of Petronius shines through. Suitable at third-year level and above, with facing notes and generous but not comprehensive glossary.

Great text for first-time exposure to "true" Latin

For those students who are learning Latin, and want to begin working on real texts, this book is perfect. By using the simpler sections of Petronius, and incorporating grammatical help for each section, this book allows the Latin student to work through the text with only a moderate level of difficulty. Though this work should not be used to replace an instructional text on the Latin language for those who are in the first phases of instruction, this text is appropriate for any second year student.

About the Author
Kermit Hill's family migrated to New Mexico in 1912 and 1922 for health reasons. His parents became well known teachers and he followed his genetic destiny for forty-three years. Born in Las Vegas, New Mexico, raised in Santa Fe, Sacramento, and La Luz, educated at Weed, Alamogordo and the University of New Mexico, he is an avid reader, a member of the Historical Society of New Mexico's Board, Tularosa Basin Historical Society, and Old Santa Fe Trail Association. He taught middle school, high school and college social studies courses. That career included ten years as an instructor at the New Mexico State Penitentiary, ironically one of his easier teaching jobs. Formatting Really Spoils this Book

Personally I did not care for this book. I much prefer Guildersleeve and Lodge. But one of the main problems this book has is the format within the pages. There are just big paragraphs with the examples embedded in them. In G&L there are a lot of "white space" between text and examples. Bold print highlights points in text and example. This formatting makes reading the book and seeing various grammer points much easier.The examples are set off by blank lines above and after so the reader can more easily examine the grammar points in quote.

In Woodcock too much is run together in one paragraph for this book to be really useful.The idea that by running everything in one paragraph somehow makes it easier to read is false - it makes it much harder to read. it is almost as if the authors were trying to save pages. I am surprised as Bolchazy and Carducci usually do an excellent job with their publications, but they failed with this one.

I would not reccommend this book but rather suggest you purchase Guildersleeve and Lodge instead.

An excellent coverage of Latin syntax

As the title suggests, this book discusses and explains Latin syntax, albeit in an advanced manner; it does not give a coverage of morphology and it is not a textbook that contains exercises. The strength of the book lies in its numerous examples of sentences, taken from a number of authors from Terence and Plautus up to Tacitus and Pliny the Younger, to explain the Latin syntax which are presented in an organised and elegant manner. In addition, the author provides an extensive bibliography to direct the reader to the various sources from which he obtained his example sentences. The author presents the grammar - Accusative and Infinitve, The use of the Ablative, Independent uses of the Subjunctive, Conditional Sentences, etc. - chapter by chapter, some being combined in a single chapter, and does so in a manner which is far advanced than an elementary latin grammar book. This book is clearly one of the best latin grammar books I have come across and I believe it will continue to be so for a very long time. If you are keen in furthering your comprehension of Latin and not hesitant to take that extra step, that extra stride from your elementary Latin textbook, then this is the book for you.

Woodcock summarizes the workings of the language, discussing each construction from the perspective of how the language can be imagined to have evolved. Time after time this speculative approach proves to have great explanatory power, making otherwise opaque constructions or idioms intuitive. At times a discussion of grammar magically opens onto wider insights into the structures and habits of the human mind.

The discussion of each construction (and every argument about the development of the language) is supported by multiple, pithy examples from Classical Literature.

Page after page, this book makes scintillating, illuminating reading for anyone who loves the Latin language and the workings of language in general.

`Green Eggs and Ham' has been translated into many languages, just as other classic Dr. Seuss pieces have been so translated. So, why should it be unusual that `Green Eggs and Ham' would finally make it into Latin?
The publishers Bolchazy-Carducci, of Wauconda, Illinois, have devoted efforts toward an enterprise to publishing modern classics into Latin - and who ever said it was a dead language. The listing of vocabulary words at the end includes entries for about 100 primary words (depending, of course, upon how you count the words). The original challenge to Dr. Seuss for `Green Eggs and Ham' was to produce a book with no more than 50 primary words. To keep the story line, in Latin there are a few more words to be used, but still this book can serve as a basic introduction to help with vocabulary for those studying Latin, and want a break from the Vulgate or from Cicero.
The story line proceeds apace, similar to the same story in English. This is a translation, after all, and not a revision or rewriting. However, because the Sam/ham rhyme doesn't neatly fit in Latin, one major revision is in the key rhyming phrase.
Non mi placent, O Pincerna,
Virent ova! Viret perna!
`Ova' is a recognisable word even to those who have not studied Latin - the ovum means `egg', the ovaries of course being the place eggs are produced. `Perna' is the word for ham. (Ironically, the word `ovum' is a neuter term in Latin, rather than female; the word `perna' is a feminine word.) The word `Pincerna' means waiter or server (it can even mean butler). Virent/viret is actually a verb, meaning `to be green'. So, the above phrase would roughly translate into
They do not please me, O waiter,
Eggs that are green! Ham that is green!
Yes, I know, it suffers a bit in translation; imagine the power of poetry and how sometime this can be lost in translation. Thus, it is important to understand the literary license with which Jennifer Tunberg and Terence Tunberg have translated the text. They have made an effort to make sure the meter, rhyme, and story fit the text as a Latin text, rather than a forced translation.
The story continues as the waiter tries to convince the reluctant diner to at least try the `virent ova/viret perna'. They are offered in a `cista' (box); they are offered with a `vulpes' (fox); they are offered `sub tecto' (in a house); they are offered with a `mus'(mouse) - all offerings are, of course, flatly rejected, until near the end, when a taste, just a taste, is accepted. And the rest is history (a seemingly ancient history in Latin, now, to be precise!).
Despite the fact that the authors, in their appendix, say that they have not in fact tried to duplicate the precise rhyme-and-rhythm system that Dr. Seuss developed in the English `Green Eggs and Ham', in fact many of the versicles throughout do have a cadence to them that is reminiscent of the beloved scheme for which Dr. Seuss is famous. For example, read the following lines aloud:
Dapem tuam vix probabo.
Tuos cibos non gustabo.
Or
Omni loco tuam pernam,
Semper ova tua spernam.
They employ in many cases (as can be seen above) an eight-syllable line of trochaic rhythm that conclude in end-rhymes of at least two syllables (not just the final syllable). This is a common rhyming pattern in ancient Latin, used in secular and religious verse, dramatic and comedic. This can approximate the pattern, if read with the right intonations, the same kind of feel one would get from Dr. Seuss!
While this is not a Latin grammar, and the construction of verbs, noun endings, etc. are not explicated, still one can begin to pick up the basics of Latin grammatical construction from texts like `Virent Ova! Viret Perna!' Jennifer Tunberg (Ph.D., Oxford) and Terence Tunberg (Ph.D., Toronto) are both educators, and thus have a care for the reader learning something from the text in addition to gaining enjoyment from it. While one could easily see the translation of a book such as `Green Eggs and Ham' into Latin as a purely academic exercise, in fact the book serves several purposes, including teaching (or re-teaching) Latin to students, and introducing the language to people who might not otherwise be exposed to it. Dr. Seuss eliminates somewhat the `intimidation factor' that Latin has for some, particularly when presented with Caesar or Cicero in long-winded passages.
This is a wonderfully fun book, a good gift for those who have everything, a good offering to the budding or the latent Latin scholar, and an interesting conversation piece even for those who have no Latin background at all. The classic line-art drawings, complete with green-coloured eggs and ham, the same Seussian characters, and the same wild drawings, are preserved here, so it looks at first glance like any ordinary Dr. Seuss book.

Hilarious

It's a truly funny book. If you like Latin and want something to lighten the day try some green eggs and ham. They're delicious! My son, 3, likes this book a lot. The colorful pictures are attractive and the repetitive nature of the verses not only helps to learn and remember, but is also appealing to children. For a similar approach see Puer Zingiberi Panis: et Fabulae Alterae (Latin Edition) which is not really funny but quite charming and attractive for children.
