In the wilderness Temporary homes The first colonial homes were simple temporary shelters. Some shelters, called dugouts, were just a hole dug into the side of a hill. The roof was the ground above them! At first, the colonists did not have time to build permanent homes. They had to grow and harvest crops and build a barn for their animals before winter arrived. They needed the food to survive the harsh weather.
