Many of the themes of my first three books remain the same, but I have added a new section 'Art and Beauty' because the arts have been a great part of my life. I received my BA in art history, worked for galleries in Santa Fe for over twenty years, and have enriched my life through the years with the contemporary and historic arts in the gallery and museum shows of New York, France, and the Southwest.''

About the Author
Barbara Berkenfield grew up amid the noise and soot of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during its heyday as a noisy world of belching steel mills and clanging streetcars. Memories of her childhood continue to surface to this day as poems. Arriving in New York after college, she found her niche as a research consultant at a French gallery and met her husband. Eventually John's career took the family to France where they and two young sons came to cherish its beauties and traditions. Returning to their eastern suburban home after seven years, they never felt truly ''at home'' again until they moved to Santa Fe in 1989. Here Barbara became a free-lance writer, a published poet, worked in art galleries for more than twenty years and continues to be a docent at El Rancho de las Golondrinas in Santa Fe.

The book was our bible during our summer '99 holiday to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Without it we wouldn't have made it in the timeframe we had for sure. Such a reader could easily survive outside the classroom, with only a translation to resort to in emergencies. The vocabulary definitions themselves nicely tread the line between being full and being specific to the text. This follows Pharr's policy on vocabulary, which was 'to preserve some mean between a poverty which is barren and a wealth which is confusing to the student who is trying...both to read Vergil and to learn Latin.' In practice, this means (briefly) listing the principal meanings, but giving first the meaning in that particular context. The result sometimes looks a little odd, with first definitions given including 'celestial' for caerul(e)us (p.3 & p.15), 'stroke' for fingere (p.7) and 'harden by heat' for coquere (p.35), and, since the vocabulary at the back includes latrator but not latrare and pavitare but not pavidus, the book clearly aims to teach the Latin of these 392 lines first and Latin as a language second. But this method is on the whole highly successful, giving exactly the same range of meanings wherever the same word is glossed.(P)...This is an inexpensive and user-friendly edition designed to get students reading the Aeneid as early and rapidly as possible, with few errors and plenty of contextualizing information about the poem as a whole and its culture. Fun to use in the classroom, for home-schoolers, and with your own kids!

I use Latin Everywhere, Everyday to teach my 8th grade class a new Latin phrase everyday. At the beginning of the week I give them five phrases, one for each day of the week, and at the start of each class we discuss one phrase as an attention getter. At the end of the week I have the students do practice questions from this book about the phrases, and then I make up my own written quiz. This book can be used at any grade level and in many different ways. The book includes chapters on and activities with general Latin sayings, Latin state mottoes, and Latin abbreviations that we still use today. The only thing that could be added to this book would be quizzes for teachers to use.

Great resource for an intro to Latin

I purchased this book to use with my two children, ages 11 and 13. We are not doing a formal study of Latin, but i wanted them to become familiar with common phrases found in writing and on buildings. This book far exceeded my expectations. The best part is that my kids are really retaining what they have learned and are so excited when they can either use a phrase themselves or can understand one they read somewhere. The book does a fine job of teaching the most important Latin information that an educationally literate person should acquire.

An Absolute Must for Today's Educators

Every new educator wishes that they could benefit from the experience of a seasoned master teacher as they begin their journey into the world of classroom teaching-to have that mentor there with you at all times. Especially as they encounter today's classrooms and the students that fill them. I almost laugh now as I think about the scenarios presented in the 1955 movie entitled "Blackboard Jungle" and how those seem to pale in comparison to what teachers face in the year 2003. It is a brand new day in education and the challenges that lie within must be addressed openly, honestly, and directly; to pretend that they don't exist serves no one. And our teachers, whether novice or veteran, must be properly equipped to deal with the problems and issues they will most assuredly face. Enter Dr. Debbie Silver and her first book, "Drumming to the Beat of a Different Marcher", and you know that help is on the way.
Dr. Silver's book serves as a perfect handbook for ALL teachers to use when addressing the issues that must be dealt with in today's classrooms. Valuable Insight

Dr. Silver's book is a valuable tool for everyone involved in children's education. It is particularly helpful for new teachers and those who feel of frustrated when some students just seem not to learn, no matter how hard we try.
Well=researched and documented, Dr. Silver explains how children are smart in different ways and, therefore, learn differently. While most of us know this from our courses in education, creating a learning environment for all students is very difficult to do in practice.
The book explains, with self-deprecating humor, how to create a learning environment for all the children we teach. It begins with how to manage a classroom and deal with parents. I found the explanation of the different learning styles and how to address them particularly helpful. There are also sections on building a "classroom community" and how to use technology to enhance differentiated instruction.
The book is easy to read and provides a "how to" for new and experiened teachers, as well as an extensive reading list by chapter. I intend to keep it as a reference to use in my own classroom.

Great book; Beneficial for all grade levels and content areas

This book is great for all content areas and grade levels. I am using this book in a college reading class with elementary, middle, and high teachers. There are great reading strategies in the book along with templates which I love!!! Though the book is suggested for middle school, as an elementary teacher, I feel like I have learned a lot from the book and can adapt the strategies to my classroom. I would recommend this book for teachers wanting to learn more about how to teach reading in the content areas.

GREAT book!

I had to buy this book for a reading class while in college to become a high school science teacher. This is a GREAT resource! There are lots of great usable strategies for any grade level or subject. It's very straight forward and an easy read too. I also found myself getting a lot of inspiration for other potential strategies while reading this book.

Fun and quite functional

Each page has a riddle on it, and as kids solve the problems they slowly figure out the answer to the riddle. This is nice because at the end, if they have gobbledy-gook, they know they've made a mistake and need to fix something. The other reviewer mentioned the answer page. The answer page is just the answer to each one of the riddles, nothing more, but really that's all you need.

Kids usually don't like doing worksheets and often get frustrated wondering if they did the problems correctly, but that's not the case with this series. Every math teacher I've met likes them.

This book contains a series of individual worksheets combined as a book. The answer key section in the back of the book is too brief, in fact in many instances only a single answer is provided for a worksheet that contains dozens of questions.
