The perfect teaching companion (or supplement for those studying the Aeneid on their own) to Virgil's Aeneid and designed to accompany Dr. Boyd's newest edition of her text "Vergil's Aeneid: Expanded Collection" which contains, but is not limited to, all the Virgil material contained on the new AP Latin Exam. Dr. Boyd has given a superior literal translation for the passages in her textbook, giving the flavor of the Latin original and allowing the teacher or student to maneuver through more difficult passages with confidence. The greatest strength of this book, however, lies in the excellent questions for discussion which correspond to each passage of the Latin text. These questions are not designed to test plot content (though they do that), but to challenge students to think and try to analyze Virgil's style and choice of words, syntax, and meaning. The teacher will find more than enough material here not only for classroom discussion, but excellent ideas to encourage creative thought, and the material can even serve as suggestions for questions on tests prepared by the instructor. The Aeneid is a complicated work, but it also represents the summit of pagan Latin literature and is timeless, being recognized as one of the greatest literary works of antiquity (some would say the greatest). Boyd's text and this Teacher's Guide bring this epic tale within the grasp of the student who has mastered the basics of Latin and is ready to move to "real" Latin, that is, Latin written by original authors, and enabling him to appreciate the beauty of this work. Highly recommended!

This book is a must for any Billy The Kid, or Lincoln Co. War buff. Mr. Lavish gets to the point, and backs up what he says. It is very different than your average run of the mill book on the Lincoln County War, and gives a very different view. If this subject is where your interest is, then this is a MUST READ BOOK.

Good information...but

I purchased this book to use when I do vermiculture presentations in elementary classrooms. The information is good, but many of the photos give children inappropriate suggestions about how to treat the worms...on their face, in their mouth...etc.

Good start for worms in the classroom

Teachers: This book will give you confidence in teaching about worms and composting. Intermediate primary students are also able to read and understand the text. Some of the sections include "Starting a vermi-composter," "Feeding your worms," "How a worm eats," and a cute fairy tale that demonstrates the importance of worms. This book is an excellent teacher resource.

Useful Teaching Tool

Squirmy, Wormy Composters is a unique book that teaches children about vermicomposting. It has clear illustrations and language about worm anatomy and reproduction on a child's level. (Not easy to find anywhere else!) There are many photographs of children interacting with worms which can help to overcome the 'yuck' reaction. I have found this book to be a terrific teaching tool.

coyote stories are teaching stories

I watched the Coyote and Roadrunner cartoons as a kid. And that is one adaptation of Coyote stories, if a bit shallow. This is another adaptation. Coyote is in a way the eternal Id, similar in some ways to another Warner Brother's personification of the id: Daffy Duck. Stories have to touch emotional chords to survive. Stories are the software of a culture, perhaps its highest art forms. I used to see the Ramakrien danced, as a kid, overseas, one can see The Nutcracker danced at Christmastime, in the US in the same way. Coyote is Homer Simpson on steroids. He is a very entertaining teacher. Will Rogers used to say that some people learned by reading books, but not many; some by learning from the mistakes of others, but not many; and most people have to learn by peeing on the electric fence for themselves. In the stories, Coyote is the one with the electric fence, so to speak. Native American worldviews are radically different from White Man culture. Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony With Earth Mother, Book 1 (Bk.1) gives some idea of what that life is like. Whispers of the Ancients: Native Tales for Teaching and Healing in Our Time gives some idea of the radically different use of story by indigenous cultures. House of Shattering Light: Life as an American Indian Mystic gives another taste of how different stories are, for native peoples. This book is a safe sort of buffet offering of elements of a very different culture. It's worth it. I never knew Wile E. Coyote had such great depth of character.Coyote Tales Coyote: A Trickster Tale from the American SouthwestCoyote: A Trickster Tale from the American Southwest are others that flesh this out. Hearing Coyote tales from a Native American storyteller is great, too. I heard Dovie Thomasson tell a Coyote story, years ago, I think she is of Kiowa Apache lineage. Her group only tells Coyote stories in the Winter. When she was young, she tried to tell a story out of season; a white faced bumblebee stung her in the throat, and she had to stop. She later mentioned the story to an elder, who said oh yes, that story is protected by the white faced bumblebee, that is one you really don't want to tell out of season. I would not be telling Coyote stories out of season, myself. It is important to respect the culture that birthed a story. Tom Brown, Jr., The Tracker calls himself a Coyote teacher. This is a different kind of teaching, one of giving just enough information to fascinate a child, so the child goes off to learn for him/herself, and them comes back for the next step. Sometimes children find better answers than the adult had. This is a Westernization, but a necessary Westernization, of teaching stories. Recall that the Br'er [Brother] Rabbit stories were all teaching stories. Br'er Rabbit and the Tar Baby is a story about the cycle of revenge, which happens out of consciousness. The story brings it into consciousness, so the cycle can be interrupted. This is a useful lesson. The Bible is full of similar metaphors, as Neville Goddard points out, but Western literalist exegesis ignores this. When you read the Coyote stories, look for the metaphor. If you need practice in this, google the story of Jumping Mouse, by Hyemoyohsts Storm, the metaphor is very easy to see in that story. Metaphor speaks to the deep mind. COyote stories are not easy to translate, just as Australian Aboriginal stories are not easily translatable. This book does rather well.

ages--focuses on the antics and exploits of a typical figure in
the American Southwest: Coyote. Native American Aesop, this
story cycle depicts the protagonist as wily, greedy and vain--
exhibitng the foibles so typical of human beings. His repeated downfalls and frequent failures are examples of what to avoid or how Not to handle various situations. In general it is his vanity to improve his appearance, or his greed for other folks'
property or food which result in his deserved come-uppance.
Like these animals' ability to regenerate themselves after fatal disasters, these tales are timeless and universal in their appeal. Whether variants of one tale or adopted from outside cultures, COYOTE TALES will entertain and enlighten those wise enough to recognize the moral behind the clowning. The excellent
black and white illustrations reveal authentic anthropological detail about the lifestyle of the Pueblo nation.

Grade 1-3-The first book examines ways that animals' bodies and/or behavior help them survive in particular habitats. Types of adaptation include camouflage, hibernation, and migration. The second entry looks at the group of animals that includes the kangaroo, koala, and opossum. The last title covers various methods of locomotion such as swimming, flying, and jumping. In all three books, a two-page spread is devoted to a particular topic. Though none of the information is oversimplified, it is rather generalized. For example, in Marsupial, only one page is devoted to the opossum and it includes a discussion of varieties found in other countries as well as the North American species. A combination of color photographs and drawings adequately illustrate the texts. Though the information provided is simple, the language is a bit too difficult for the newly independent readers whom Kalman seems to be targeting. Many of the scientific terms are boldfaced and defined in the text and/or in the glossary, but there isn't much consistency as to which ones are defined where. Of the three books, Marsupials is the most successful, mainly because it has the narrowest scope. However, none of these offerings is in-depth enough to serve as a primary source for reports. All three are best suited to youngsters looking for brief answers to satisfy their curiosity and casual browsers who are animal enthusiasts.

Animals move in an incredible variety of ways. Some fly. Some swim. Others swing from tree branches. This book looks at more than a dozen ways in which animals get around, and it shows how the body of each animal is equipped for its own form of travel. We see amazing adaptations, from the hairy bristles on the legs of a water beetle (which make the legs more effective as oars when the insect rows through the water), to the patagium, or flap of skin, on each side of a flying squirrel's body (which enables the animal to glide from tree to tree). Readers are bound to learn something new from this book, whether or not they are familiar with all the animals in it. (They probably aren't--do you know what a basilisk is?) For example, both frogs and kangaroos have strong hind legs that are longer than their front ones, and both animals use those long hind legs to hop. But frogs land on their front legs, so they have to stop between leaps; kangaroos land on their hind legs, and so they don't have to pause. The book would benefit from a more extensive glossary, but even so, it is a welcome addition to the Science of Living Things series. Don't be surprised when your little readers start to hop, squirm and wriggle around the house, trying out new forms of locomotion.

Great Book!

I needed an explanation of the Plant Kingdom for a presentation that I was giving. Even thought this was for adults, I wanted the explanation to be simple. This book fit and I will now share with my granddaughters who love to learn anything, Good purchase!
