negates the Aryan Superman nonsense
By John de Angelo
Obscenely biased but good info on Nazi race theory. It negates the Aryan Superman nonsense. The Nazis were far too rational and scientific for such childish notions. This book proves it. I recommend this with Christopher Hutton's "Race and the Third Reich" and V. K. Clark's "Black Nazis II" or Black Nazis III.

A brief but powerful text
By J. A Magill
Mosse's work on the genesis of european anti semitism is both readable and powerful. Through his exploration of nationalism and catholic history he develops a cogent theory of how the christian attitudes towards Jews were formed. While most study on this topic begins in the 19th century, Mosse is able to link it to a far deeper history and in so doing, greatly improve our understanding of this phenomonon.
Any one who wants to understand the Holocaust's progenitors would do well to start with this important text.

Review
This series truly provides a delightful glimpse into the nineteenth century. The illustrations match the stories and are a visual reminder of life in another era. This series of fifteen books is ideal for both Canadian and U. S. pioneer life studies -- Library Materials Guide, Spring 1985

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
Taken from Chapter 16: The beautiful orchard Farmers were very proud of their orchards. After many years of hard work and patience the sight of the beautiful trees full of fruit was a wonderful reward. The tastes of the apples, cherries, peaches, pears, plums and quinces were even better! The young fruit tress had to be tended carefully. They were pruned or trimmed so that the branches grew evenly and the tree was wide rather than tall. The fruit from the trees that grew wild in the new country was small and bitter. If settlers did not bring saplings with them, they improved the wild fruit by experimenting in their orchards. This experiment was called grafting. Grafting means taking a branch or cion from one fruit tree and attaching it to the limb of a different tree. Some farmers were so skillful that they could draft plum branches onto a peach tree!

Great New Mexico Resource!
By KnightBlue
I have known Kathy as a librarian and storyteller since we first moved to New Mexico 6 years ago. When I heard that she had written a book about reading resources of New Mexico I could not wait to be able to peruse it page by page. We are a homeschooling family and are always looking for ways to incorporate community resources into our studies. This book has ideas on every page and is one of the best references for all things New Mexico. I read it from cover to cover gleaning projects, recipes, celebration ideas and more and adding them to our list of 'must dos' this year. I honestly think this lists every known New Mexico resource for children K-12. My only wish is that it had more books written in Navajo-but perhaps that is just a result of too few books in that language. I would highly recommend (and have already) this book to educators everywhere.

READiscover New Mexico
By Cindy Bellinger
In the summer of 2004 a statewide library program brought a diversity of cultures together through reading. This book is a compilation of all the different programs, activities, crafts, celebrations and recipes that were created and gathered up by librarians--in large and small towns all across New Mexico.

Aimed for readers at all levels, this book is the perfect resource for parents, teachers and librarians looking for a grab bag of ideas. Though the subtitle is A Tri-Lingual Adventure in Literacy, only an opening poem is written in three languages--English, Spanish and Navajo. After that the book resorts to English and the celebrations come from Anglo and Hispanic traditions. Still, the book is packed full of information and ideas for the classroom. The back of the book contains reproducible templates, drawings, borders cartoon-like characters that appear in the book.

In 1989 New Mexico became the first state to have an official state cookie--the Biscochito; and this book has 10 different recipes for it. One craft project is cutting thin slices of a small branch, sanding and varnishing the surface and gluing it to refrigerator magnet. One joke is: What is a computer mouse's favorite appetizer? Chile con 128K-so.

Boring and almost useless
By Gringo
This book was a waste of money. It contains very little of interest for my kids. I wanted a fun activity book for them to take on the plane to NM -- something with puzzles, word searches, pictures of the region, and interesting facts and tidbits about the geography, history, and culture of NM. Unfortunately, this book has very few puzzles or interesting information and awful illustrations. Do not recommend.

Lost Treasures & Old Mines, A New Mexico Federal Writers' Project BookFrom Brand: Sunstone Press

Between 1850 and 1912, Territorial New Mexico was home to a diverse mix of peoples. Contesting with those who had lived in the region for thousands of years, an array of newcomers arrived: Hispanic settlers, Anglo homesteaders, ranchers, cowboys, sheepherders, merchants, railroad men and perhaps its chief adventurers--treasure hunters and prospectors. Lost Treasures & Old Mines brims with stories of gold fever, copper ore and silver mining in the American Southwest. In 1541 when Coronado's conquistadors arrived in search of the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola, pre-Columbian natives had long been mining for turquoise. The stories in this collection tell of hidden Indian mines, treasures lost en route to Spain, gold heists on trains and stagecoaches, placer miners roaming the hills and chicanery among claim partners. Geronimo, Victorio, Billy the Kid and U.S. Calvary soldiers thread through these stories, along with lucky characters who strike the motherlode and hapless ones who lose their fortunes. The Lost Juan Mondragon Mine, The Dead Burro Mine, the Lost Mine of the Pedernal, the Adams Diggings, Elizabethtown and Pinos Altos--such places live as shining memories in these oral histories of fabulous fortunes lost and found. Between 1936 and 1940, field workers in the New Deal Works Project Administration's Federal Writers' Project recorded authentic accounts of life in the early days of New Mexico. These original documents, published here for the first time as a story collection, reflect the conditions of the New Mexico Territory as played out in dynamic clashes between individuals and groups competing for control of the land and resources. Lost Treasures & Old Mines, the third in the New Mexico Federal Writers' Project Book Series, features a lively collection of stories and historic photographs of the era. The first and second books in the series are Outlaws & Desperados and Frontier Stories.

Juan De Onate's Colony in the Wilderness: An Early History of the American Southwest, by Robert McGeagh

A generation before the establishment of the European colonies on the East Coast of America, Spanish explorers and friars were trudging the deserts and mountains of the Southwest in search of souls, riches and glory. By 1598, Juan de Onate had established the first permanent settlement in the American Southwest, twenty-two years before the Pilgrims founded Plymouth Colony. The story of this first colony, the explorations, the defeats and successes, the hopes blighted and the hopes fulfilled are told in this concise history of the era.

Review
''A very nice, concise history of New Mexico during the Spanish period, beginning with Cabeza de Vaca and concluding in 1704 with the death of Vargas. Prepared to commemorate the Columbus Quincentennial, the text is an effort to give more credit to Oñate's role in colonization. The heroic effort of these early pioneers is marred by the horrifying cruelty of the conquerors, and policies of the Catholic Church that are impossible to admire from our current vantage point. McGeagh tells the tale honestly and well.'' --Books of the Southwest

''Subtitled 'An Early History of the American Southwest,' this is a short but succinct account of Spain's first colony in the Southwest. In 1598, Juan de Oñate established the first permanent settlement, some 22 years before Plymouth Colony was founded on the East Coast. This is the story of the explorations, the difficulties, the triumphs, and the problems of those first settlers. The book also covers the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the subsequent reconquest by the Spanish in 1692. This concise and accurate account has an index and several illustrations. Dr. McGeagh teaches history and philosophy at Northern New Mexico Community College.'' --Marcia Muth, ''Book Chat'', Enchantment

''New Mexicans have to put up with being mistaken for residents of a foreign country with some regularity by citizens of her own forty-nine sister states. Even American history textbooks ignore the story of our past as it if were not part of the American experience. The Spanish had a head start of more than half a century over the English in the conquest and colonization of North America. Yet to read a standard American history, one would think the story of European involvement on the continent began when the British arrived. Every school child knows about Captain John Smith and Sir Walter Raleigh. How many outside our borders have ever heard of Juan de Oñate, founder of a much earlier European colony in what is now part of the United States. Robert McGeagh set out to right this glaring oversight in his book Juan de Oñate's Colony in the Wilderness. The long title of this short book is somewhat misleading, however. In this slim volume McGeagh manages to cover the entire first 150 years of New Mexico's history after the Spanish arrived. He begins with the odyssey of Cabeza de Vaca and the Arabian slave Esteban wandering through Texas and New Mexico in the 1530s and ends with the establishment of a permanent settlement in Santa Fe by Diego de Vargas in 1692. Despite its small size, this masterfully written history is no perfunctory listing of names, dates and events. A model of succinct prose, McGeagh has created a concise, yet colorful history packed with solid information. At the same time, he brings to life the rich parade of conquistadors, Indian chiefs, friars, settlers, fortune hunters and slaves who played out the epic drama of conquest and colonization.

Juan de Oñate led the entrada north from Mexico in 1598 that founded New Mexico's first European colony on the banks of the Rio Grande above present day Española twenty-two years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. Oñate, a true child of the New World, was born in Mexico to a wealthy mine-owning family and married a descendant of both Cortez and Montezuma. The expedition he headed was enormous: one hundred and seventy families, 230 single men, 7000 head of stock and numerous Indian laborers (who no one bothered to count) made the long, perilous journey north from Mexico in a caravan stretching four miles. The goal was gold and the glory of God, and '…the tenacity with which the Spanish pursued their spiritual goals was duplicated in their zeal to obtain their material objectives.' McGeagh succeeds in conveying a sense of the stunning achievements and genuine heroism of the Spaniards in establishing a permanent presence in a remote and hostile land. At the same time he does not shrink from portraying the savagery and brutality with which they treated the native peoples they encountered in New Mexico. From Coronado in 1540 to de Vargas in 1692, the Spanish left a trail of destruction and blood in their trek throughout the Southwest surpassed only by the Americans in their westward advance some 150 years later. By 1700 the Spanish and the Pueblo Indian had begun to live peaceably side by side, establishing an early multi-cultural society that still leaves its distinctive imprint on New Mexico today. The early effort to stamp out traditional Indian religion led directly to the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. In addition, as McGeagh states, 'The preachment of Christian love and compassion naturally seemed completely paradoxical in the face of the atrocities committed in the name of the Catholic king. Consequently, Spanish Catholicism was hard-pressed to maintain its credibility for most of the 17th century.' McGeagh's fine book leaves one with a renewed sense of the richness, complexity, epic tragedy, excitement, high drama, the shame and the pride in this first clash of cultures in settling the American frontier.'' --Ann Buffington, Mountain Passages
