The story of Spanish settlement in New Mexico begins with Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's expedition into the territory in 1540-1542. The conquistadors were seeking new lands, gold, and converts to Christianity. In 1598, Juan de Onate's expedition of soldiers, settlers and indigenous Mexicans arrived, charged by the Crown to colonize the northern frontier of New Spain. Far from Mexico and the seat of Spanish government, in a land of extremes already inhabited by the First Americans, these settlers proved their tenacity. Farmers, shepherds and townspeople, they lived off the land: they built houses and churches, constructed irrigation ditches, raised crops, wove cloth and hunted for food in an often hostile land. They borrowed, bartered and intermarried with their Pueblo neighbors and weathered an occasional uprising; they battled with Comanche, Apache, and Navajo for control of land and resources. When the American army arrived, they chose sides and paid the consequences. Between 1936 and 1940, field workers in the New Deal Works Project Administration's Federal Writers' Project (WPA) recorded authentic accounts of life in the early days of New Mexico. Happily for us, Hispano settlers were avid storytellers and gave the field writers detailed descriptions of village life, battles with Indians, encounters with Billy the Kid, witchcraft, marriages, festivals and floods. The result is a rich and uniquely regional literature. Stories from Hispano New Mexico is the fourth volume in the New Mexico Federal Writers' Project Book series. The first three titles in the series are Outlaws & Desperados, Frontier Stories and Lost Treasures & Old Mines, all from Sunstone Press.

About the Author
ANN LACY, an artist and researcher/writer, has lived in New Mexico since 1979. She has worked for Project Crossroads, a not-for-profit educational resource group, in projects related to New Mexico history and culture. Participating in preserving open space and preservation efforts, she received a City of Santa Fe Heritage Preservation Award in 2000.

ANNE VALLEY-FOX is co-editor of the New Mexico Federal Writers' Project Book series. She is a poet and writer who has worked for two decades as a writer/researcher for Project Crossroads. Her fourth collection of poetry is How Shadows Are Bundled (University of New Mexico Press, 2009).

Fremont F. Ellis, a famous landscape painter, was born in Virginia City, Montana in 1897. His father was a nomadic dentist and theater operator who traveled from the bustling gold towns of the American West to the metropolitan cities of the east. Ellis began painting at about twelve years of age although he had little art instruction or formal education of any kind. He had his first art showing in El Paso, Texas while still in his teens and was immediately praised for his work. However, his father thought he should have a profession along with his art work, so he studied optometry and had his own practice. But he wasn't happy with the life of a businessman, and after visiting friends in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he decided to make his home there and pursue his art work seriously. In 1921, Ellis joined with four other young painters in Santa Fe-Josef Bakos, Walter Mruk, Will Shuster, and Willard Nash-and together they founded an art society called "Los Cinco Pintores." They called themselves modern artists who encouraged freedom of expression and they made a definite impression on the art movement in Santa Fe. The group disbanded in 1926, but Ellis continued painting until his death in 1985. He showed his work actively in Santa Fe and Los Angeles, his unique impressionistic style earning him a large and dedicated following. His work is in many museum collections including the Museum of New Mexico, the El Paso Museum, the Art Institute in Lubbock, Texas, and the Stark Museum in Orange, Texas. Barbara Spencer Foster is a third generation native New Mexican. She grew up in the shadows of the Manzano Mountains where her ancestors had settled in the 1800s. She is the author of "Girl of the Manzanos," "Pecos Queen," "Fire in the Bosque," and "Santa Fe Woman," all from Sunstone Press.

The pieces are in Spanish but the informative text is in English, as are the careful notes, reference sources and bibliography. Free translations are for comprehension only, not for saying or singing in English. I applaud this choice--Spanish is a mellifluous, musical language with few effective equivalents in English speech rhythms.

Gin Ebinger has been collecting Spanish folk materials for many years, out of love for the culture and a wish to transmit it to the children and teachers in her classes. She has evolved into an active and fully dedicated folklorist. Collecting in the Spanish-speaking areas of New Mexico and southern Colorado yielded some material that had been passed down for generations, and her research trip to Spain revealed many roots. Ignored interview files from WPA projects in the 1930s, students, friends and family who recalled their childhood games--and Gin's scholarship--brought this useful book, Niñez, 'Childhood,' to life. The singing games are especially delightful. There are circles with one in the center, imitative tasks for others to do, leap-frog hops, arches to go under, tag and catch ageless children's delights duplicated in so many cultures. The Spanish words are not difficult to sing. Playing these games now can extend active and tacit proof to our children of our very basic cultural unity.

Yes, a few of the familiar pieces are here--Don Gato (with his background and five melodic variations), and Ambo Hato, introducing us to its dramatic cousin from Spain. Some games, really stories-with-songs, play like mini-operas; the prose stories in the last section invite dramatic development. Told in English, they give some flavor of the originals, but it would have been good to see them printed in Spanish, too. Perhaps a teacher or student in the class would like to do a translation? Many previous generations, determined to assimilate, abandoned their folkways and language; in effect, this buried a body of spoken and sung traditional lore. Gin reminds us that it will be through a revival of indigenous folklore, via the children, that we can help ensure the continuation of this rich culture. Even with the present emphasis on cultural pride, it may well be the partial responsibility of music teachers of Hispanic children to help them value their heritage. In this book from Sunstone Press, she focuses primarily on northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, exploring the links between our mountainous regions and old Spain.

As she presents dozens of youthful chants and games, the reader is drawn into the rhythms of childhood. I found myself remembering the steady beat of old childhood games, as we hopped in and out of the jump rope, or over the cracks in the walk. Ebinger describes one movement research theory, that hearing a steady beat early in life will enhance a child's later motor skill development. In any case, such a beat runs through most of these juegos, making them easy to remember and connect with, even for those whose first language is not Spanish. But it is for those whose first roots are Spanish that Ebinger primarily writes. She sees in the children a turning point, the survival of the culture. And songs such as these nurture both the roots and the memories.

There are also a good number of cuentos, including Don Cacahuate and Pedro Urdimales. One story features San Isidro as a bean and chile farmer, trying to get in his plants on May 15, San Isidro Day. An angel appears, telling him that God doesn't like him plowing on a feast day, and threatening him with hail. San Isidro says he'll make the best of the hail, he is late in getting these plants in. Another angel comes with the same message from God, threatening hoppers and worms. Isidro is undaunted and says, 'Tell God I'd be pleased not to be annoyed by any more young angels.' Yet a third angel comes, this time with the message, 'God will send you a bad neighbor if you don t stop.' Isidro halts. 'All right. Tell God He wins. To have a bad neighbor is too hard to bear even for a saint.' This compact paperback is easy to read, easy to follow, and well-researched. It includes music scores for about half the tunes, with variations in many cases. About the Author
The author, a native of New Mexico, was raised by homesteader grandparents who came to the territory soon after 1900. She early developed an appreciation for the history and folklore of the American Southwest and her collection of legends and lore began with the ''cowboy/frontiersman'' culture of Quay County where she grew up. She is also the author of Aguinaldos, Christmas Customs, Music and Foods of the Spanish-speaking Countries of the Americas from Sunstone Press.

Great Resource for Spanish

This book is a summary of folklore in relation to children. Some knowledge of Spanish is very helpful as you'd need to know how to pronounce the words to play the games. Some of these games seem rather old-fashioned and I don't think many modern children would like them. Consider those a history and folklore lesson. There is some background given on some of the traditions. This book seems to be extracted or have used the same research as Mexican American Folklore published by August House. This is not a book with quick and easy directions as it is more of a reading book. If you want to teach your children songs and games in Spanish, I'd choose another one. If you're a Spanish student or a native speaker who wants to know about the Latin culture, then this might be a good choice.

Different from Class

I bought this thinking it would supplement the class which I am taking with the author, Seth Elsheimer, right now. It is not really anything like the class. You can tell he wrote the book by the voice of the writing but it is basic and not that helpful in preparing for the tests in his CHM 2211 class at UCF. Pass on this one unless you really need more practice problems and a quick overview of Orgo 2.
