To Be A Roman is an amazing book. I'm using it with 4th through 6th graders along with an ancient history textbook and it is great! The kids love it - they're totally engaged and I love it because it offers the depth and breadth that I'm looking for. It challenges while still being readable for these kids.

Is your student studying Latin or the time of the Romans? The To Be a Roman workbook introduces students to what basic everyday life was like during the time of ancient Rome.
The fairly short chapters-17 of them-present the basics of Roman society: its social classes, religious life, housing, domestic life, education, slavery, urban life, laws, farming, occupations, travel, trade, measuring of time and space, leisure and entertainment, and the stages in the lives of boys and men, and girls and women. Each chapter in this 168-page workbook includes basic information along with several black and white illustrations or photos of various artifacts. At the end of each chapter are questions to answer, and sometimes a word search or crossword puzzle.
Be warned, there is no answer key. However, you'll find two review chapters plus a bonus chapter of additional resources, including books, films, websites, historical novels, and more.
To Be a Roman is not a comprehensive study of ancient Roman culture, but it does offer insight on everyday life where other materials don't. Be prepared to talk about some of the areas of Roman life that were harsh, such as leaving babies exposed outdoors to die because of a birth defect or the fact that the baby was an unwanted girl. --Jo Dee Soles, Practical Homeschooling

great book for teachers and homeschoolers

The authors of this book have created something very useful for both classroom teachers and parents who homeschool their children. To Be A Roman is one of best "Roman Culture" books that I have read and used in the classroom. Many books discuss the topics in this text (ranging from family dynamics, politics, and the ancient economy), but they are either dreadfully boring or cursory in their coverage. What is great is that this text can fit with almost any learner. For those new to Roman culture, it provides enough preliminary explanation to bring the ancient world to life. For those who know a little about the Romans already, this book provides details that make the Romans seem more human than we accustomed to.
The chapters are delineated by subject. At the end of each chapter there are a variety of exercises. Some test knowledge, others give ideas for projects or research. All of the chapters and their activities are suitable for middle school and high school students.
I would encourage any parent looking to homeschool their children to use this book as part of their curriculum, just as I would encourage any Latin teacher to use it in the classroom as well. The authors are well-respected Classicists who have done a very good job consolidating a lot of information. They also treat the information without adding critical, judgmental comments. Ultimately, this is a well written book that easy to use and should be a part of any Latin teacher's resources.

For anyone who wants a more complete understanding of the Roman culture

"To Be a Roman: Topics in Roman Culture" is a complete and comprehensive guide to what's usually glossed over about this great civilization - the day to day life of its citizens. Touching on the family life, the religious rituals, the homes in which they lived, and the cities they called there own, both Rome and its other cities - and so much more. The perfect resource for anyone who wants a more complete understanding of the Roman culture, "To Be a Roman: Topics in Roman Culture" is a must have for them and community library reference collections.

An excellent classroom resource.

This book is a fabulous resource, both for a traditional classroom or a homeschool environment. Each chapter begins with an article about the chosen topic (Families, Daily Life, Travel, etc.) and then has a combination of review exercises, discussion questions, activities, and games (crosswords, word searches). I really appreciated that the review sections did not simply test students' knowledge, but asked them to apply what they had learned. For example, after learning about the Senate, students are asked to compare it to modern governments, discuss how they would change it, and so on. My students enjoyed this book, which I would often pull out as a precursor to a research project to give them a brief overview, or as a break at the end of a unit. I highly recommend the book, and in fact have purchased additional copies to give to friends who teach as well.
