Correcting a misapprehension

It seems a shame that such a well-put-together book should be tarred by a single two-star review based on a misapprehension.

Volume II of Peter J. Aicher's Rome Alive is specifically intended as a kind of extended appendix to Volume I -- a compendium of the original sources, in the original languages, for the passages that the first volume gives only in English translations.

As a way of doing business, it seems both academically scrupulous and adaptive to the needs of different audiences. It's pretty clear from the pricing that Bolchazy-Carducci expected to sell a lot more of Volume I than of Volume II. That's reasonable and appropriate.

If you aren't a classicist, and just want the material describing the various locations in the ancient city -- and I've seen none that was better collected or more thoroughly documented -- just buy Volume I. It has everything you'll want.

If, like me, you are a reader of Latin and Greek, and an inveterate checker of sources and translations, Volume II provides the extra clout you'll want -- all the pieces assembled in one place. You can find out exactly what word Livy or Suetonius was using for some troublesome concept. (Yes, publication-level material will probably require that you burrow further into the best editions of these texts, but this can take you a long way, fairly quickly.)

Volume I, therefore, is directed at a broad readership -- the scholar, certainly, but also the tourist or the armchair visitor to ancient Rome. Volume II is the scholarly support for the professional or student classicist. For what it is, it's an excellent resource, and one that should be judged on its success at doing what it set out to do, not something else.

Wonderful supplement to the English version. If you study Latin or Ancient Greek, this source is a treat to the eyes and ears when you read about the location in Rome from original Ancient sources. Just fabulous.

historical hijinx

This book is lots of fun; it's full of howling puns and silly word play. At the same time, it's a real history of Rome (up to the death of Caesar), with all the facts as straight as they're ever going to be. I'm not sure I'd assign it to students with no knowledge of Roman history, but as a supplement to Livy or Cicero, it would be great.

There was also genuine and profound sorrow in the rugged hearts of many in New Mexico, Texas and Arizona, as well as farther afield, and the circumstances surrounding his death, ostensibly at the hands of a most unlikely cowboy named Wayne Brazel, have puzzled and intrigued historians since that spring day in 1908 when he was shot to death and left lying in a sand drift on a lonely road. But was Pat Garrett shot by Wayne Brazel, or hired killer Jim Miller? Brazel confessed, but few believed his story and he was acquitted. Colin Rickards' book sheds light on this unhappy affair which still remains a source of controversy. Colin Rickards has done extensive research on Pat Garrett including checking official court records, investigating contemporary accounts and conducting interviews. He separates fact from fantasy in this meticulously documented account. An authority on frontier history, the author has written numerous articles and books on the Old West. Light fare on the shooting of Pat Garrett, the man best known for shooting Billy the Kid. Unconvincingly sets out that "Killing Jim" Miller was Garrett's assassin, rather than Wayne Brazel -- the man who confessed to shooting Garrett. Best evidence is that Brazel was traveling with Garrett, a difficult man with a touchy temper, and an argument ensued in which Garrett uttered what appeared to Brazel to be a threat, and Brazel took advantage of Garrett's back being turned to shoot him in the back of the head. Garrett's shooting by Brazel was witnessed by a fellow traveler named Carl Adamson. While this version of the killing, a sneaky shot behind the victim's back by a run-of-the-mill character, is not as exciting as a bushwacking by one of the Old West's notorious killers, it is the most plausible, and this book does nothing to dispel that.

One of the major discoveries in this collection is the extent to which specialists and nonspecialists dealing with Gilgamesh have ignored one another. The first section will show that one Assyriologist will use the earlier work of Assyriologists as a basis of any new investigation, but will rarely comment on the work of outsiders. The nonspecialists, for their part, read the Assyriological work very selectively. And the astonishing - and healthy - proliferation of Gilgamesh translations, especially since the 1980s, shows that some are produced by Assyriologists and some are produced by translators who know no Akkadian at all. If this collection has a purpose beyond that of presenting the insights of many gifted readers of this ancient poem, it would be to establish a common ground where Assyriologists and nonspecialists interested in Gilgamesh may meet.
