I thought this book was great...

I traveled to Iran for 2 weeks earlier this year and found it fine for my needs. Some of the info was outdated (travel agents in the US, some hotel stuff, etc). I can't speak about remote areas that other reviewers mentioned, but if you are planning to visit the major areas (Tehran, Shiraz, Esfahan), the book has everything you'd need.

Typical Lonely Planet

It started with Mr. St. Vincent, contiued with Mr Greenway and now a new gentleman has continued this trend in travel writing. This third edition to Iran is simply a mere augmentation of the second. After traveling Iran on the Second edition, a few years after its publication, its comforting that future travelers can budget and plan with up to date prices and information. However, one can travel Iran and write a new book with updated practical information, however its another thing to give an update a new outlook on the slowly changing Iran. Some places in Iran are not worth going to while some are hidden treasure troves of spectacular people and undending fulfilment. Its understandable that the author of a lonely planet guide can not give too much personal credence to places. Paul loved Kermanshaw, I hated it. Paul said a thing or two about Hamadan, he should have said a hundred, and the update doesnt change this form of writers liberty. Tehran is a fantastic city well worth spending time, as with many places, which is something I believe the authors miss. With this kind of coverage of places, a traveler has to let their intuition get the best of them. One must use the guide as what the word implies, guidence. In general it is a good book, and since it is the only proper guide available in the West, it is essential. However it misses the essence of Iran in the new mellenium. There is too much personal opinion. As well, it would be useful if information was provided for upscale travelers as well, who are merely visitng on business. Hopefuly the next edition will not only include the updated prices, but also include the updated Iran.

This Lonely Planet is not good

While the guide is relatively useful for hotels (prices are outdated), it is not very interesting for the restaurants nor transport (many many obvious options aren't listed), nor for other practical information as many of Pat Yale's comments are negative, predicting hassle, bureaucracy or cheating when there is only friendlyness, smiles and enough english to handle the situation.
Her comments on wearing the Hedjab are displaced. If wearing a scarf ruins your holiday to that point, are you realy the right person to write a guide book ?
Pat Yale seems to have been afraid during her trip in Iran, and annoyed by iranians. They are the most friendly people I have encourtered on my many trips. I travelled on my own, and was not pinched in the back or molestated by anyone, never. The Lonely Planet, full of comments warning lone women travellers to better take a guided tour, made me hesitating unneccesarily before my departure.
I did not appreciate her comments on the american blocus, where she pretends that other countries, including Europe and Japan, are too eager to tap on Irans ressources.
Iran and the Iranians, and you as a tourist, definitely desserve a better guide, and Lonely Planet needs more competition.

Grade 1-3-The first book examines ways that animals' bodies and/or behavior help them survive in particular habitats. Types of adaptation include camouflage, hibernation, and migration. The second entry looks at the group of animals that includes the kangaroo, koala, and opossum. The last title covers various methods of locomotion such as swimming, flying, and jumping. In all three books, a two-page spread is devoted to a particular topic. Though none of the information is oversimplified, it is rather generalized. For example, in Marsupial, only one page is devoted to the opossum and it includes a discussion of varieties found in other countries as well as the North American species. A combination of color photographs and drawings adequately illustrate the texts. Though the information provided is simple, the language is a bit too difficult for the newly independent readers whom Kalman seems to be targeting. Many of the scientific terms are boldfaced and defined in the text and/or in the glossary, but there isn't much consistency as to which ones are defined where. Of the three books, Marsupials is the most successful, mainly because it has the narrowest scope. However, none of these offerings is in-depth enough to serve as a primary source for reports. All three are best suited to youngsters looking for brief answers to satisfy their curiosity and casual browsers who are animal enthusiasts.

In 1903 Pedro Sanchez published his Memorias, or Recollections of the Life of the Priest Don Antonio Jose Martinez. This rare book, written in Spanish, is hailed by historians and others as an important and unique contribution to the literary history of New Mexico and the American Southwest. Sanchez was a student of this famous folk hero priest and the book beautifully illustrates the respect and admiration the people held for Padre Martinez. The priest is shown as dedicated to the Church and the people who looked up to him as a champion of social justice, equal rights, the downtrodden and the oppressed. Pedro Sanchez himself, as a product of Padre Martinez's coeducational school in Taos, New Mexico, credits his mentor for his success in his career and life as did many of his other students. Translated into English by noted author Ray John de Aragon, this Spanish and English edition features an introduction by Myra Ellen Jenkins, PhD, a former New Mexico state historian.

About the Author
Ray John de Aragon, a leading scholar on Padre Martinez and the authority on his life and work, translated the original Spanish text of the Sanchez book into English. De Aragon has a Masters in American studies and has been a keynote speaker at public and historical conferences on Padre Martinez whom he has research extensively. He is the recipient of numerous awards and is the author of Padre Martinez and Bishop Lamy, The Legend of La Llorona, and The Penitentes of New Mexico, all from Sunstone Press.

Like a sentinel, The Sacred Heart Church--La iglesia del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus--sits at the crossroads, atop a hill, overlooking the bucolic green valle of Nambe, New Mexico. From the panoramic and hallowed church property, one has clear vistas of the magnificent Sangre de Cristo Mountains. In this most tranquil setting, members of the parish gather every Sunday morning for mass at 8:30. The masses, celebrated by many revered priests and gifted musicians and vocalists over the years, are holy and serene--calm for the soul. This book, through research and interviews by Carolina Romero de Lujan, is a compilation of the church history and is co-authored by her son, Alfredo Celedon. Its purpose is to document, thus preserve, the oral history of the church and cemetery in written form and is designed for the reading and viewing pleasure of the families of Nambe and their succeeding generations, as well as for readers who are interested in northern New Mexico history. This book also serves as a reminder that Nambesenos, through their collective good spirit and work ethic, built the church over 100 years ago, rebuilt it after it burned down in 1946, and continue to maintain its architectural dignity through constant care to this day.

Carolina Romero de Lujan is a life-long resident of Nambe and a meticulous record keeper. She is the daughter of Juanita Sena de Romero and Petronilo, the wife of Ismael Ernesto, and the mother of Alfredo, Ernie, and Jessica Ramona. She raised her family in the valley where she attended Nambe Elementary School and is a graduate of Pojoaque High School. She is retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory. Alfredo Celedon Lujan is hijo of Carolina and Ernesto. He is the husband of Amy and the father of Amanda, Mabel, and Peter. He attended Nambe Elementary School, Pojoaque High School, New Mexico State University, and is a graduate of Pojoaque High School. He is a career educator in northern New Mexico, graduate of New Mexico State University and the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College.
