About the Author
Barbara Weiden Boyd is the Henry Winkley Professor of Latin and Greek at Bowdoin College, where she teaches courses in Greek and Latin languages and literatures, classical mythology, the city of Rome, and the Roman family. Boyd earned her BA in Classics at Manhattanville College, and holds an MA and PhD in Classical Studies from the University of Michigan. She has also taught at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome as a visiting professor for Duke and Stanford Universities, and has been a Visiting Fellow at the Bogliasco Foundation near Genoa, Italy, and at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Since 2002, Boyd has directed (with Dr. Margaret Brucia) an AP Latin workshop in Rome for high school teachers. She has served on the AP Latin Test Development Committee for eight years, three of them as its chair, and has served as a faculty consultant for the grading of the AP Latin exam. Boyd specializes in Latin literature, especially the poetry of Vergil and Ovid. Her books include Ovid's Literary Loves: Influence and Innovation in the Amores (1997); Brill's Companion to Ovid (2002), an edited collection of scholarly essays on the Ovidian corpus; and a textbook for intermediate Latin students, Vergil's Aeneid: Selections from Books 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, & 12 (2001) and its revised edition Vergil's Aeneid: Selected Readings from Books 1, 2, 4, and 6 (2012) along with a number of other Vergil textbooks.

Great introduction to the Aeneid.

I find this a wonderful book companion for the AP class. I wish the grammar appendix was in the book instead of online. The vocab and grammar on the page is really helpful. Wonderfully descriptive notes are a great help to the students.

Great Idea, Deceptive Product

The "cards" match Wheelock, and should work great for their designed purpose. However, the individuals who approved these for production and sale at the publisher, Bolchazy-Carducci, should be horsewhipped or complained about to the FTC for calling these cards. Doubtlessly one of their slick, sharpie bean-counters got a promotion for figuring out to sell cards in cheap book form. What you get for your money is a book of bleached pulp paper that is perforated to be torn into cards. This doesn't even qualify as being card stock (which it should be if they are supposed to be cards, right?). This is merely heavy pulp paper that is only slightly thicker than that which is used to make colouring books for crayons out of. Be prepared to spend up to 8 hours tearing the "cards" apart along the perforations. (This was not a fun task as I have diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome.) Even if you decide to save time by cutting the cards with scissors or a papercutter, you still have to prefold them if you want to see where to cut along the perforations. The "boxes" are separate pages that must be cut and folded a la 2nd or 3rd grade paper assembly projects. These pages are not any thicker than the ones that constitute the "cards," so the "box" that you will have assembled by the time you are done is made of flimsy paper. Be prepared to guard this box to keep it from being easily crushed. Don't expect it to survive very long in your backpack without ending up with a total mess of loose "cards" floating around in there that will be time consuming to gather up. Come on, Bolchazy, how much more would it have cost you to have mechanical paper cutters slice these cards up on your mechanized assembly line? Probably next to nothing. How much to have mechanical box-making equipment assemble real boxes for these...probably not much more in cost. But, most critically, you didn't want to spring for the card stock, though, did you? Don't expect me to buy any more products anytime soon with your name on them. Captive market here, eh, because the students should have the cards to get good grades right? Amazon did a great job of sending me these quickly, but the publisher gets an "F" for this assignment. I doubt my local used book store will be interested in buying these "crude" cards from me for resale when the course is over. Sheesh.

Mediocre quality, excellent tool

As other reviewers have noted, these "cards" have their drawbacks, the biggest of which is the poor quality of perforation. I use the perforation to pull the pages out, then a scissors to cut some of the cards. The cards themselves are a bit thin but then this is a single-purpose, probably single-use, product.

Drawbacks aside, I found these cards invaluable. I just completed Latin 101 at the University of Oregon, and easily got an A for fall term, due in no small part to using these flashcards as a major component of my review and pre-test study time. In contrast, I found the Workbook for Wheelock's Latin to be comparatively useless.

Once you start moving beyond Wheelock, the Vis-Ed flash cards (1000 per pack) are the next step. They're high quality, pre-cut and useful indefinitely.

Not as bad as all that.

Before buying this product I read a number of negative reviews about it. Most of which talked about the poor quality of the paper used for the cards, how the cards themselves tore easily. As for the provided box to hold the cards in I agree that it is useless, but the cards themselves have been quite a help in my studies. The cards are fine as long as you have a decent box to put them in to keep them from getting smashed or torn.

Good overall guidebook...

I found this book to be extremely helpful in covering all the bases of transport, taxes, tipping, typical business hours, history, background, and a good overview of what's where, and how to get there. Often times, we'd have questions about things like poverty level, health coverage, average income, quality of water -- and found that the guide pretty much answered all of those, and more.

The maps aren't super, and because of the size of the book, it made it difficult to carry. Besides, if you're asking a local for directions, you'd want a bilingual map, as the English names of cities/stations drive them crazy. (ie, Mandarin romanizations in a Cantonese city) I do give it credit for accurately pointing out the numerous obscure markets in Tsim Sha Tsui, as well as the various shops in Hong Kong City. The walking guides were surprisingly useful.

The reason why I give it 4 stars is because HK is all about food and shopping, and the book came up seriously short on the food portion. (no pun intended) Despite it being only 3 months since publication (12th edition, Jan 2006) literally *every* restaurant this book recommended (of which we attempted to find) turned out to be non-existent, had changed ownership and had turned into some other shop. I attribute some of this to bad luck, but I seriously doubt the restaurants didn't *all* go out of business in the last 3 months, but rather that the information on the guide was a little outdated.

The section on food is one part I really relied upon to book to help me out, and was pretty disappointed when it didn't come through for me, as the alternatives to an English guidebook aren't great. The alternatives are to ask the hotel clerk (who will recommend the hotel restaurant), or a random stranger (who will recommend his friend/family's restaurant), or read a weekly magazine about which eateries are good (which require Chinese reading skills).

Despite my frugal 4 stars, this guide is considerably better than most, and is worth the small change to purchase, especially when compared to the amount of money you spent to book your vacation.

A vast improvement over the Ninth Edition

Disregard Amazon's reader reviews that precede this one. The earlier comments aren't based on this book at all, but were simply ported to this page from the previous edition's. The well-deserved complaints about "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou," Ninth Edition, do not apply to "Hong Kong and Macau," 10th Edition. Note that "Guangzhou" was dropped from the title.
I never go on vacation somewhere without first buying the Lonely Planet travel book on the destination. So it's been with some frustration that for the last three years, the Hong Kong book has been among the weakest of the series, at least among those I've bought. But the long-awaited update has some badly needed changes and updates.
The previous edition came out in January 1999, several months after Lonely Planet had released another, entirely different Hong Kong book titled simply "Hong Kong." The "Hong Kong" book was pretty skimpy, including a mere 10 pages or so on Macau. But it did have some helpful color maps at the back of the book.
When "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou" came out, it included some badly needed material on Macau, as well as the Chinese border cities of Shenzhen and Zhuhai. Unfortunately, the book also lumped in about 90 pages on Guangzhou, and another eight-page supplement on "Hong Kong Film." For 99-plus percent of the people who are visiting the Hong Kong area, these pages were only dead weight. Virtually nobody visiting Hong Kong plans to visit Guangzhou, and why should they? It's a long trip, and by the book's own admission, there's nothing there for tourists anyway.
Even worse, this book was out of date from the moment it hit the streets. Both the "Hong Kong" and "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou" books gave the location of the Hong Kong Museum of History as Kowloon Park. But the museum had already moved when I visited Hong Kong in November 1998, when the "Hong Kong" book had just came out. And so I was more than a little surprised that "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou" repeated the same mistake in its January 1999 printing!
But what *really* annoyed me was that "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou" didn't have the easy-to-read, easy-to-find color maps of the earlier "Hong Kong" book. Instead, the larger book had ugly, hard-to-read black-and-white maps scattered willy-nilly throughout.
This has changed under the book's all-new author, Steve Fallon. (Damian Harper does not get credit in this edition, despite what Amazon says.) Fallon has dropped the Guangzhou section and other useless padding, making the book a lot more portable. The Museum of History's current address is in there now. And the color maps from the slim "Hong Kong" book also are in the back of the new "Hong Kong and Macau." The new book still uses the hard-to-read, hard-to-find B&W maps for the border towns and Macau's islands, but that's a quibble I can live with. Other general information throughout also seems to be current.
I've been looking over the new book for several days now, and overall, it seems that while the worst parts disappeared, the best stuff carried over to the new edition. For instance, I was glad to see that the map of Shenzhen still has the names of landmarks and hotels in Chinese, as well as English. Showing the Shenzhen taxi drivers the Chinese name of where you want to go is usually the only way for non-Chinese-speaking tourists to communicate their intended destination.
While the new edition is a great improvement, it was at least a year overdue. Three years is a long time to have to wait for an update when so much has changed here, given the change in sovereignty in both Hong Kong and Macau. The ninth edition came out just a couple of months after the Hong Kong handover, and *before* the Macau handover, for crying out loud.
I don't know if I could have honestly recommended the ninth edition of "Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou," but I certainly can do so for the 10th edition of "Hong Kong and Macau." Even if you don't plan on visiting here in the immediate future, it's an interesting read.

HK info is fine, Macau info was garbage

I returned from HK/Macau less than a week ago where my traveling companion had this book. It is full of useful and accurate information on Hong Kong. We found a number of restaurants listed in this book and were pleasantly surprised, however, the Macau sections were next to worthless. I'm convinced that there doesn't exist **anywhere** an accurate map of Macau.

We planned to follow the walking tour of Macau AND tried to, but were unable to follow the instructions - we are both engineers (MIT and former Rocket Scientist) so following directions isn't usually a problem for us.

Bottom line - good for HK, not so much for Macau.

I had Fodor's Hong Kong's 25 Best, 5th Edition (25 Best) and found it less useful for our 13 day trip. It would be fine for 2-3 days however. The Fodor's included a pull out map that was much better than LP provided.

It's a lonely planet indeed!

I used this book heavily during two trips around Iceland in 2000 and 2002, albeit the third edition.
The authors know where the "odd" things are to be found. Thanks to them, I located strange stuff which isn't on the average tourist's agenda: geothermal areas, bubbling sulfurous mud pots, Asian restaurants (in Iceland!), cemeteries. I experienced some lovely, desolate terrain where no one was to be found for miles and miles.
But, then again, that's why this is the "Lonely Planet" guide!
This guide, like other ones published by Lonely Planet, is clearly oriented toward the type of tourist who backpacks and/or hitch-hikes. Nonetheless, it still has much use for the independent tourist who prefers hotels to huts and cars to cabins. Just pick a place and start exploring. Their detailed maps and descriptions won't lead you astray.
A special bonus provided with of Lonely Planet books is the company's "eKno" service, which allows one to call nearly anywhere in the world from anywhere in the world, with tolls automatically debuted from a prepaid account. eKno also allows one to listen to one's email messages. Top-notch guide for adventurous travelers

Since 1999, I have been to Iceland twice and Greenland twice, for a total of seven weeks--extremely unusual for an American. Those trips included extended excursions by bicyle, backpack, and cross-country ski, with some bus excursions as well. Throughout, this book was my primary guide. I found it reliable and an extremely good source of inspiration, particularly for hikes.
I cite my own experience because I clearly fall into the target readership for this book. Car travelers aren't the intended audience, and may be disappointed. This book presumes (as do I, even at age 49) that the best way to see Iceland is afoot, a-pedal, or on one of that nation's wonderful backcountry bus routes. If you're not prepared to carry a backpack onto or off of the buses, you'll probably prefer another guidebook.
My main quibble is with the maps, which were hard to locate when I wanted them, and not very detailed. But you can get great maps in Reykjavik, so that's only a minor problem.

As solid as can be expected for unusual destinations

Despite the availability of internet resources, I think a printed guidebook is particularly helpful for unusual destinations such as these because it puts the hard-to-find information in one place under your fingertips. I used the previous edition of this book to take a week long trip to Greenland in January 2001. Even though a winter excursion to the Arctic is not a common vacation plan, this book told me how much sunlight to expect at what latitudes, estimated prices for air travel between towns, what sort of unpredictability to expect in the Arctic, whether or not it was feasible to do coastal travel by boat in the winter, the best times to see the aurora borealis, and the extent to which dog sleds are used as a 'normal' form of transportation, just to name a few. Of course it also provided detailed descriptions of towns which helped me choose my final destination. While providing the standard Lonely Planet maps, listings of places to stay, currency exchange options, restaurants, and whatnot, this particular guide also provides a healthy dose of reality. It makes clear that some places are quite difficult to visit unless you are well financed, and yet it also provides starting points for the extremely determined. Contrary to previous criticism, the previous edition (published in 1997) does in fact acknowledge the existence of the internet, providing email addresses and websites for further information. I can only imagine that this updated version is more complete. To quickly address the negative feedback that the guide is "outdated", please note the publication date of May 2001. That is quite current for any guide book. I do not think this book or say, "Lonely Planet : Antarctica" should be compared to the other Lonely Planet guides for the simple reason that the locales are some of the most remote on our planet with limited accessibility and unpredictable weather patterns. It's not nearly as easy for a writer or photographer to hop a jet to the Arctic as it is to Europe or Latin America. And once the person is there, he or she does not always have the luxury of roads or regular plane service to travel to the next destination. A person could end up waiting a week in northern Canada (as I did) to hop a plane to the next town on the itinerary. Furthermore, these are "niche" guidebooks which appeal to a very limited percentage of travelers. For economic reasons, they are not as likely to be frequently updated because the readership is not as substantial. My only criticism is as follows: because Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands are fairly remote destinations, I think there should be a deeper emphasis on what activities are available upon arrival, other than hiking, sightseeing, or organized tours. While the natural wonder of the area is amazing, the local cultures have just as much to offer. Furthermore, the Arctic can be a lonely place, even when you have traveling companions. Someone spending a few weeks in these northern wonderlands could benefit from more advice on how to best interact with the locals who spend their lives there.
