Corroborating Evidence III, New and Expanded Edition, by William T. Rasmussen

In this newly revised and expanded third edition of Corroborating Evidence, William Rasmussen, author of three previous true-crime books, continues his investigation into famous, unsolved criminal cases by focusing on two separate, unrelated stories. The first zeroes in on the Cleveland Torso Murders committed between 1934 and 1938, where someone killed and expertly dismembered at least twelve victims in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1938, a letter by someone claiming to be the Torso Killer was mailed from Los Angeles to Cleveland's Chief of Police Matowitz. Approximately eight years later on January 7, 1946, six-year-old Suzanne Degnan was killed and expertly dismembered in Chicago. A seventeen-year-old by the name of William Heirens eventually pled guilty to the Degnan murder and two other murders. In July, 1946, Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) was in Chicago ''terribly preoccupied with the details of the Degnan murder.'' Less than six months later the Black Dahlia was killed and expertly severed in Los Angeles. Was the Cleveland Torso Killer also responsible for the murders of Suzanne Degnan and the Black Dahlia? ''If so, then is William Heirens wrongly incarcerated for crimes he did not commit?'' the author asks. ''I think he was,'' he says. The second investigation turns the spotlight on the Zodiac Killer, who was responsible for at least six murders in California between 1966 and 1969. On October 30, 1966, eighteen-year-old Cheri Jo Bates was brutally murdered in Riverside, California. On December 20, 1968, sixteen-year-old Betty Lou Jensen and seventeen-year-old David Arthur Faraday were killed near Vallejo, north of San Francisco. Someone who identified himself as the ''Zodiac'' claimed to be the killer. He sent taunting letters, notes, greeting cards, codes, secret messages and hidden clues to newspapers and the police, and the killings continued. To this day the identity and location of the Zodiac remain unknown. The author says, ''I think there is a high probability that the Zodiac is still alive and currently incarcerated for some other crime.'' In this edition Rasmussen presents further evidence that may link the Zodiac Killer to other famous unsolved murders. The fascinating and highly documented information contained in this new illustrated third edition of the book could well be a significant development in the Zodiac case as well as the Torso Murders of the 1930s.

Great Information, But As A Kindle Book: A FAILURE
By Attila The Sub
I own all the most germane books on the Black Dahlia, Elizabeth Short, having started my journey down this fascinating yet bloody path years ago with James Elroy's Black Dahlia in the early '80s.

This book, Corroborating Evidence III, appears to be filled with interesting information, but on a Kindle, it is broken up into segments that don't make any sense. AVOID. This book needs to be reconfigured to work on a Kindle. Otherwise, it is just a jumbled mess.

I recommend it, however, in book form. But, Kindle purchasers should be aware of this sloppy version.

Outstanding book makes NEW connections
By AK
The focus of this book is on the Black Dahlia case. Cutting through the recent shoddy and exploitative works on the subject, the author makes very interesting connections between the Dahlia case and similar murders in the midwest. He also presents compelling evidence on a suspect, though I would say he falls short of "proving" this person to be the Dahlia killer. But it is the most interesting and convincing case I have yet read.

My main interest is in the Zodiac case. The author presents some amazing new evidence! Like the Dahlia case, the Zodiac case has become filled with hucksters and hoaxsters. Apparently half the population of California think their stepdad or father was the Zodiac and/or Black Dahlia Killer.

Rasmussen presents evidence about the Robison Family murder case in Michigan on 6/25/68. He shows that a tipster sent in knowledge of the crime using the name ZODIUS. This shares 4 letters with ZODIAC. It appears they BOTH come from the Latin word ZODIACUS. He also shows the police report which indicates the Robison Family was killed with a .22 weapon with six lands and grooves with a right twist. This is a MATCH to the weapon used in the possible Zodiac crime of the murder of Domingos and Edwards at Santa Barbara 1963 and a MATCH to the confirmed Zodiac crime of 12/20/68 the murder of Jensen and Faraday. Also both ZODIAC/ZODIUS sent letters to newspapers asking their words to appear in the paper.

Rasmussen also shows evidence suggesting a possible link to the Valerie Percy murder of 9/18/66. Just one month later, another college girl would be brutally killed, Cheri Jo Bates, who was probably (almost certainly) a Zodiac victim.

Other cases and possible links are explored as well.

This is an excellently researcher and well written work. I would say any person interested in either the Dahlia case or the Zodiac case will enjoy reading this book.

Review
Great pleasure attends the reissue of Bennett's New Latin Grammar by Bolchazy-Carducci. Unavailable since Allyn and Bacon's reprint went out of print many years ago, teachers and students alike can rejoice in its reappearance. Bennett's definitions and explanations of basic grammatical and syntactical points are a paragon of clearness and succinctness. I strongly recommend it for all high-school teachers and for undergraduates at all levels; for graduate students and scholars it is ideal for a quick look since the organization is clear and 'user-friendly.' --Robert I. Curtis, University of Georgia, The Classical Outlook

This is truly Latin grammar at its finest: logical and succinct...indispensable for undergraduate majors and minors and even clear enough to use at the secondary level. It is simply the best. --Bette J. Ruellan, University of San Francisco

What a joy it is to have Bennett's New Latin Grammar available again to a wide audience of students and instructors of Classics! The Grammar presents clearly and precisely with short, specific examples from primary sources the inflections and syntax of Latin and gives a fundamental understanding of the sounds, accent, particles and word formation in the Latin language.

In addition to the clear presentation of these essential principles of grammar and syntax, Bennet's Grammar provides a student with a brief, but well defined history of the Indo-European family of languages, and also of the stages of development of the Latin language.

Students and instructors will find especially helpful Bennett's sections on prosdy, the Roman calendar, Roman names and the definitions and examples of figures of syntax and rhetoric.

I strongly recommend Bennett's Grammar as an essential tool in the learning of every level of instruction. --Richard L. Trapp, San Francisco State University

Kindle Version- Much improved!
By Bert C. Mccollum
I am an advanced Latinist who spends some time every day studying Latin texts. The PRINTED version of Bennett's is one of the most valuable resources I own. It is concise, accurate, and complete. The most imporant features for me are the excellent Table of Contents and Index that allow me to quickly turn to exactly what I'm looking for. I would give the printed version 5 stars.

The KINDLE version does not feature live links from the Table of Contents and lacks the Index all together. If I need to look up something on page 90, I have to turn the page ninety times to find it. This makes the Kindle version useless as a reference tool. I have removed it from my Kindle.

***I just downloaded the NEW Kindle version of Benet's Latin Grammar and it is much improved. It includes a "live" table of contents and even a live index. Best of all it's still free. I have to add three more stars to my original review and give it a perfect 5. I highly recommend this excellent tool. Well done Amazon!!****

Very Useful
By Carey
I'm very happy with this book. It's a small, easy-to-use reference. It also has useful information about the history of the language, the Roman calendar, etc., though not in incredible detail. Because of its size and ease of use, it's the first Latin book I grab when I want to learn or remember Latin syntax. I end up skimming through, invariably, because the book makes it easy and interesting to do so. It's compact, useful, well-formatted, and comfortable to use. Know that it isn't a dictionary; for that, you'd need to go elsewhere. (I'm not a Classics scholar - just a former Latin student who's still interested, occasionally active, and someone who always wants to learn and practice more... if I had the time.)

Vergil's Aeneid: Hero War Humanity, by G. B. Cobbold

Patrick Romane
Here the excitement, adventure, romance and glory of Vergil's classic emerge from a vigorous style and evocative prose.

Book Description
One of the pillars of Western literary tradition, Vergil s Aeneid is also a terrific read: the story of a man whose city is destroyed in war, and of his journey to find his place in destiny. This epic has it all: adventures on the high seas, passion, battles, monsters, magic, meddling gods, and struggles that test the moral fiber of both men and women. The Aeneid has been deemed one of the most influential poems in world literature. And yet, a translation with wide appeal has been lacking until now. G. B. Cobbold joined with Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers to produce an Aeneid that gives the epic its due as the rousing and moving story that it is, while remaining true to the spirit of the Latin original. This an Aeneid like no other: a fresh, page-turning rendition that reads like a novel, but has the vividness of poetic language, with attractive and accessible reader aids. Sure to become a prized standard!

Review
Vergil's Aeneid: Hero, War, Humanity provides a refreshingly modern narrative which engages modern readers with as much power as the Latin original itself. 'Nothing that happens today has not already happened in the past, and there is no tale that has not been told before'. So remarks Cobbold, who believes that Aeneas' journey applies to former and current world situations.

Since the author has intentionally written for the person with no background in Latin, the storyline and references are as easy to follow as in a modern story. The reader familiar with the Aeneid in Latin, or just reading parts of it in Latin, will benefit from a text easily understood.

Students reading the Aeneidfor the first time in Latin will profit from following the story itself and grasping the deeper theme relevant to human experience. Reading an English version with such vitality should encourage Latin students to search in the Latin for the equivalent meaning the English was trying to bring out...Since the translation is in prose, students reading the Latin will more easily appreciate the original wording of the poetic structures.

...The translation achieves the vibrancy of a modern style by deleting names or references not necessary to following the story and by adding words or phrases to explain context that is not familiar to the modern reader without a classical background. Compared to the style of the original Latin, the sentences are shorter, avoiding the standard Latin syntax; though beautiful in the original, lengthy sentences do not evoke the same immediacy for English readers. Unencumbered with footnotes for explanations, the text moves along smoothly and dynamically.

The author has purposefully prepared the English version as a novel. As he points out in his introduction to the translation, he has intended to write the story with a strong plot for today's readers, thereby maintaining the excitement of the story. Both the headings and the illustrations throughout the book keep the reader involved in the action. Changes in scenery are handled with a direct transition. The style of the writing captures the purpose of Vergil. Cobbold's responsible popularization has effectively combined the scholar s knowledge with a novelist s touch.

While some teachers might feel that having their students read the Aeneid in prose is not as authentic as in poetry, the characteristics of the novel fit the purpose of the original well telling a story using the past to inform the present and add a contemporary feel to the message. Moreover, students, especially younger students, will probably find the prose less intimidating and more accessible. The illustrations and accompanying sidebars preserve the flavor of the original epic. The approach of the translation in the form of a novel allows the class to concentrate on the meaning and theme. If read to supply context for reading the Latin, the prose enhances the students appreciation of the original Latin poetry.

...The five appendices in the back add further information especially helpful to a classroom setting:
Appendix I briefly outlines the plot, with about one paragraph per book.
Appendix II provides significant events in Roman history.
Appendix III fills in the genealogy of the cast of characters.
Appendix IV provides 16 thought-provoking discussion questions, intended for a study group, but equally suitable for use in a class, either for class discussion, written essays, or panel discussions.
Appendix V identifies the main characters of the Aeneid.

...Cobbold's recasting of Roman culture in our contemporary vernacular allows English readers to understand exactly why Vergil's work is a classic with universal appeal and will help draw students to study the original Latin. --Vicki Wine, eLitterae

Vergil's Aeneid: Hero, War, Humanity is an impressive English translation of Vergil's classic work of literature. G. B. Cobbold renders Vergil's Aeneid into a novel format with sidebar summaries, which reads very much like an exciting modern adventure story! Enhanced with illustrations, a map of Aeneas' voyage, a glossary of characters, family trees of main characters and gods, a book-by-book outline of the plot of the Aeneid, a timeline of significant events in Roman history, reading group discussion questions, and much more, Vergil's Aeneid truly makes classic literature come alive. Highly recommended for study and discussion groups, and a welcome alternative interpretation for those who are more familiar with Vergil's Aeneid in verse-by-verse form. --The Bookwatch
...The Aeneid has been translated numerous times, but Cobbold's narrative interpretation adds a dimension to the classic tale, giving it the feel of an adventurous novel that will appeal to a wider audience. --Gerald T. Burke, The Historical Novels Review

Part of the reading experience includes spending some time with the classics and G. B. Cobbold has made that much easier with his new translation of Vergil's Aeneid. The author's knowledge of Latin and this classic story has permitted him to retell it as a novel, rather than its original text as a poem about a man whose city is destroyed by war and his long journey to find his destiny. In the process, there's plenty of high drama, passion, battles, monsters, and meddling gods. It speaks to every new generation in a very special way. This new version makes the story especially accessible in many ways, including a glossary of characters, a timeline of significant events in Roman history, and other aids. --Alan Caruba, Bookviews
Vergil's song of the Roman Empire still resounds in the ears of listeners as it has for two millennia. Now, G. B. Cobbold has translated the great Roman epic into English as a novel. Here the excitement, adventure, romance and glory of Vergil's classic emerge from a vigorous style and evocative prose. The narrative depicts and reveals individuals and circumstances, conflicts and resolutions in a manner that is as exciting as the best current adventure stories. This translation of the Aeneid makes Vergil's epic accessible and entertaining for English speaking students.

At the Aeneid's core remains the moral question: do I do as I want or as I ought? Cobbold depicts Aeneas' decisions and dilemmas in this light, telling Vergil's story in simple yet elegant English. The prose clearly depicts the people and events of the epic in a lucid and vivid style providing the edifice that displays Vergil's presentation of the moral quandaries of humanity.

This edition of the Aeneid; is embellished with the enjoyable illustrations of Thom Kapheim whose drawings show people and events in a light yet meaningful way.

For students of Latin but more importantly, for students of the humanities, Cobbold's translation of the Aeneid is an exciting introduction to the great Latin classic. --Patrick Romane

Action! Action! Read all about it!
By nympha marina
This translation of Vergil's epic is gripping! This version is important for it's expressive language and simplicity. It does not weight the reader down with obscure background, minute details, and lengthy accounts and presents the story in a way that can be read with excitement and immediate understanding. I enjoyed the little whimsical pictures which are on almost every page. This is a fun book to read for anyone interested in adventure narratives or the classical world. It could be particularly useful for a student reading the epic for the first time. Anyone would enjoy it for the intensity of the story itself.

This book introduces kids to Yoga the way it should be practiced by people of all ages: as a joyous celebration of life. The poses included are both accessible and challenging, the instructions and background information clear and age-appropriate, at the same time warm and inviting. Wake, by Elizabeth Knox

One sunny spring morning the Tasman Bay settlement of Kahukura is overwhelmed by a mysterious mass insanity. A handful of survivors find themselves cut off from the world, and surrounded by the dead. As they try to take care of one another, and survive in ever more difficult circumstances, it becomes apparent that this isn't the first time that this has happened, and that they aren't all survivors and victims—two of them are something quite other. And, it seems, they are trapped with something. Something unseen is picking at the loose threads of their characters, corrupting, provoking, and haunting them. Wake is a novel about what it really means to try to do one's best, about the choices and sacrifices people face in order to keep a promise like "I will take care of you." It is a novel that asks: What are the last things left when the worst has happened? and about extreme events, ordinary people, heroic compassion—and invisible monsters. An invisible monster is what one can't see coming; with an invisible monster one never knows when they're in danger and when they're safe—if they retreat to their fortress they can't be sure they haven't locked it in with them.

Review
One for fans of Stephen King Red magazine Wake is a triumph all of its own. Knox writes with a rare psychological acuity about humans under pressure in an intolerable, incomprehensible predicament Financial Times Knox keeps the monster off stage and examines the psychological consequences of its depredations on the survivors, subverting the norms of the horror genre and thus making the ambiguous finale all the more startling. Wake reads like a collaboration between Dean Koontz and John Wyndham, rewritten by Margaret Atwood Guardian What starts off as a horror story builds into a taut, psychological sci-fi thriller that is alive to the troubling questions of what happens to humans when civilisation as they know it disintegrates Sunday Times Culture Elizabeth Knox has the most original and lateral literary mind in New Zealand ... I steamed through the book; by the end my hair stood of end. I shouted , "Holy shit!" several times Metro Unflinchingly gory and truly insightful, this stand-out tale of humanity vs horror will keep you up all night Heat magazine

Oooh, got a wicked book hangover... When you are pushed beyond endurance, the monster comes to feed on your most desperate emotions... A fabulous read. Just lost track a bit of one or two of the peripheral characters now and then, but no biggie. I was lost in the story world.

Riveting Read
By Anne Mannion
You quickly get used to the opening zombie gore (not sure I would want to see the film) and then the device of extreme adversity and stress plus physical isolation is put to work.
Some previous reviews found the style of writing confusing, written from different perspectives - I like this and find it interesting.
Knox does a great job of connecting the characters by observing the same scene from different angles. And she does the same from the personal experiences of the characters.
Being an adopted Kiwi, the NZ landscape made it personally relevant for me and she uses Maori terms without feeling the need to spell them out for her reader.
Definitely recommend this book

Multiple Personalities
By Antony Millen
Check out that cover! 'Wake' is the latest in my ongoing review of New Zealand novels. Most of my regular blog readers will know that my posts about books are part reviews and part journal entries connecting my reading to my own thoughts, experiences and events as a writer. For over two years I've focused on reviewing New Zealand books, often by writers who have a connection to me, regardless of the genre: Taumarunui authors (Cate Sutherland, Stuart Campbell, Nix Whittaker), online connections (Tui Allen, Susan Tarr, Mandy Hager) relatives of friends (Kate Duignan, Maurice Shadbolt), or those that have made headlines either through awards or because of controversy (Eleanor Catton, Fiona Kidman, Ted Dawe). Perhaps it’s a Nova Scotian thing – we love to celebrate the achievements and creations of those we know . . . or of those known by the ones we know . . .

Knowing my current interest in New Zealand writing, my wife bought me 'Wake' by an author with which, until recently, I had no connection: Elizabeth Knox. It was a good purchase with a beautiful, very Kiwi cover, and a plot seemingly akin to 'The Walking Dead', a television series my wife and I watch together. In my early reading of it, I discovered it had more in common with Stephen King’s 'Under the Dome' which I read several years ago: a small town, Kahukura, is cut off from the rest of the country by an invisible force creating a community of trapped survivors who might otherwise never have interacted, but now find they must live together and work towards their own salvation.

It is a very well written book with beautiful descriptions of the shore town environment and clever similes where Knox compares natural features to things like computer games and other modern elements. I was struck by Knox’s short sentences and the plethora of characters she introduces. It is chaotic at the beginning as I suppose it would be in such a situation for, not only is the town cut off, but a madness has struck the vast majority of Kahukura’s inhabitants, committing horrific violence to their neighbours and themselves.

Despite the genuine quality of the writing and the intriguing plot, it was difficult to immerse myself in the story as there were so many characters, so much chaos. Knox does a good job of stabilising things somewhat through the character of Theresa, a local police officer who, for reasons explained much later in the book, retains her sanity and endeavours to help those she encounters in the early days of the “No Go Zone”. This device works to a point and we are led to believe that Theresa may be the central protagonist and, indeed, the book ends from her point-of-view. Comparing with 'The Walking Dead', she is 'Wake'’s Rick Grimes.

However, once the madness settles and the bodies are literally piled up, we get to know the other survivors better as they form their community and sort out their present survival and plans for rescuing. For much of the first half of the book, I struggled to separate these characters’ personalities and I’m not sure if that is because of the writing or my reading. I’m certain Knox has provided the necessary information about each one, but I would often get lost trying to picture how Bub was different from Warren or how to distinguish Belle from Holly.

Still, I was mostly OK with this, intrigued by the mysterious, mute man in black who wanders around the place, resisting any attempts to integrate him into the fold. Things felt a bit sluggish until the storyline of Sam and William began to dominate. Without giving too much away, Sam is a brilliant character, literally multi-layered in her personality. Her story becomes integral to the plot and the fate of Kahukura’s remaining residents.

The other reason I found the second half of the book more engrossing was because of a development in my personal circumstances. About that time, I was invited to act as a panellist in next year’s inaugural Ruapehu Writers Festival, speaking alongside Elizabeth Knox herself. In addition to my enthusiasm at being invited to join one of New Zealand’s celebrated authors (most notably for her novel, 'The Vintner's Luck'), I also began to read the book with different eyes, curious as to why the festival’s organisers thought we might make a good team for their topic. As the festival's programme has been developed, our panel’s topic has revolved around darkness in small towns and so it was with this in mind that I read the second half of 'Wake', becoming even more interested in the darkness found in Kahukura – and not just the obvious darkness brought about by the Monster creating the madness, the mayhem and the No Go Zone.

I began to see the darkness in the individuals and recognise this was the strength in Knox’s writing in 'Wake'. One thing I’ve learned from watching 'The Walking Dead' is that the only thing more deadly and frightening than the zombies in a zombie apocalypse are the other humans. But, unlike the television series or films like the 'Mad Max' franchise where most of the dangerous humans are other bands of survivors who crave resources and will stop at nothing to get them, the characters in 'Wake' have no interaction with others outside their community. The real dangers lie within and, in fact, most of their demise can be traced to the behaviour of those surviving alongside them. During their containment, all the positive elements of human nature continue: love, shared meals, tending to illnesses with great affection, sacrifices of time and energy for the greater good; but so too do the negative aspects: jealousy, sloth, deception, theft, domestic violence, murder.

It's a good theme and one I enjoy exploring in my own writing. It's a theme that can answer the question, “What can horror texts tell us about ourselves and our world?” In 'Wake', Knox tells plenty and shows us plenty. I look forward to hearing more from her at the festival in March.

Antony Millen is a Canadian living and writing in New Zealand. He is the author of three novels: Redeeming Brother Murrihy: The River To Hiruharama, Te Kauhanga: A Tale of Space(s) and The Chain

Coastlines: The Poetry of Atlantic Canada, by Tammy Armstrong, Alfred G. Bailey, Elizabeth Brewster, Fred Cogswell, Allan Cooper, Lynn Dav

Atlantic Canada is enjoying a renaissance unknown since the days of Alden Nowlan, Milton Acorn, and John Thompson. Coastlines: The Poetry of Atlantic Canada features work by 60 of the region's finest poets in a volume that will whet appetites for more. The earlier poetry renaissance began in 1945, with the establishment of The Fiddlehead magazine. In this new volume, the present Fiddlehead editor Ross Leckie, and his collaborators Ann Compton, Laurence Hutchman, and Robin McGrath, showcase the lasting effects of that earlier renaissance and confidently forecast that the newest generation of Atlantic poets will help to make poetry, once again, a pre-eminent literary form in Canada.

Coastlines provides expansive reading pleasure because of the astonishing range of poetic intelligences it represents and the myriad ways poets find to work and rework the topography of Atlantic culture and landscape. The earliest poems in the anthology were written in the 1950s by the acknowledged greats — Acorn, Nowlan, and Thompson — and by Alfred Bailey, Elizabeth Bishop, and Charles Bruce. The collection also features work by senior poets such as Kay Smith, M. Travis Lane, Fred Cogswell, and Douglas Lochhead, and mid-career poets such as Elisabeth Harvor, Harry Thurston, and John Steffler. Poets of the post-1995 renaissance include Anne Simpson, Sue Sinclair, Michael Crummey, and George Elliott Clarke, who won the 2001 Governor General's Award; Lynn Davies, Sue Goyette, and Carole Langille have all been recent finalists, and both Brian Bartlett and matt robinson have won the Petra Kenney Memorial International Poetry Prize. The newest voices in Coastlines belong to Tammy Armstrong and Geoff Cook, whose work was selected from manuscripts published in 2002.
