''In the first chapter of this book about Charles Fletcher Lummis, historian Marc Simmons includes a reprint of the long unavailable story of the friendship between Lummis and Amado Chaves (first published as Two Southwesterners, Charles Lummis and Amado Chaves, San Marcos Press, 1968). After suffering a paralytic stroke brought on by overwork, Lummis went to New Mexico to recuperate. He lived for a time with the Chaves family in their hacienda near the village of San Mateo, New Mexico, and cultivated a friendship with Amado Chaves. Over the years, Lummis and Chaves kept up a correspondence. Simmons used these letters as his primary source for Two Southwesterners. Simmons' description of his own association with Chaves' daughter and the discovery of the Lummis-Chaves papers provides readers with a glimpse of the ways in which a skillful historian comes across his primary sources.

In addition to the story of the Lummis-Chaves friendship, the present book contains an essay on Lummis as a photographer. The article, entitled 'Cameras & Controversy,' appeared in New Mexico Magazine (vol. 79, October 2001). An avid photographer, Lummis documented his travels across the Southwest, the Andes, Mexico, and Central America. He shot five-by-eight glass dry-plate negatives on his travels, and then later used the cyanotype process, a printing method based on the light sensitivity of iron salts, to create photos for retail sale. Simmons' Charles F. Lummis concludes with an original Lummis letter, a tribute to Lummis' son who died at the age of six, and the notice of Lummis' death in 1928.

Between 1890 and 1900, Lummis (1859-1928) published seven books about the Southwest: an autobiographical account, A Tramp across the Continent (1892); two tour books, Some Strange Corners of Our Country (1892) and The Land of Poco Tiempo (1893); and four books of folklore: A New Mexico David and Other Stories and Sketches of the Southwest (1891), The Man Who Married the Moon and Other Pueblo Indian Folk-Stories (1894), The Enchanted Burro (1897), and The King of the Broncos and Other Stories of New Mexico (1897). In addition to promoting the Southwest in general, he was a crusader for the Spanish heritage of California. He was editor of the Daily Times, chief librarian of the Los Angeles Public Library, editor of Land of Sunshine (later retitled Out West), and founder of the Southwest Museum. A flamboyant figure with an incredible amount of energy, Lummis continues to fascinate readers with an interest in the Southwest. Written in a smooth-flowing style, Simmons' Charles F. About the Author
Marc Simmons, besides being an aficionado of the writings of Charles F. Lummis, is himself a historian and prolific author. In 1993 he was knighted by order of the King of Spain for his publications on Spanish colonial history of the Southwest. Among his most recent books are New Mexico Mavericks, Stalking Billy the Kid, and a new edition of Southwestern Colonial Ironwork, all published by Sunstone Press.

About the Author
Patrick Fairbairn (1805-1874) was born in Berwickshire, Scotland, studied at Edinburgh University, and was an outstanding scholar among Scottish Presbyterians. After 27 years in pastoral service, he served three years as divinity professor at the Free Church College in Aberdeen before becoming principal of the Free Church College, Glasgow, for 18 years until his death. He is the author of Commentary on Ezekiel and The Pastoral Epistles.

An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes and Earth Structures is an introduction to seismology and its role in the earth sciences, and is written for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students.

The fundamentals of seismic wave propagation are developed using a physical approach and then applied to show how refraction, reflection, and teleseismic techniques are used to study the structure and thus the composition and evolution of the earth. The book shows how seismic waves are used to study earthquakes and are integrated with other data to investigate the plate tectonic processes that cause earthquakes. Figures, examples, problems, and computer exercises teach students about seismology in a creative and intuitive manner. Necessary mathematical tools including vector and tensor analysis, matrix algebra, Fourier analysis, statistics of errors, signal processing, and data inversion are introduced with many relevant examples. The text also addresses the fundamentals of seismometry and applications of seismology to societal issues. Special attention is paid to help students visualize connections between different topics and view seismology as an integrated science.

An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes , and Earth Structure gives an excellent overview for students of geophysics and tectonics, and provides a strong foundation for further studies in seismology.

About the Author
Seth Stein is Professor of Geological Sciences at Northwestern University. He has received the James B Macelwane Medal of the American Geophysical Union, been elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and Geological Society of America, and named to the Institute for Scientific Information Highly Cited Researchers list. He served as Scientific Director of the University Navstar Consortium and on the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology's Executive Committee, and started Northwestern's Environmental Science program.

Michael Wysession is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University. He is the recipient of the Packard Foundation and NSF Presidential Faculty Fellowships for his research into the structure of the Earth's deep interior.

... this book for one star not because I don't like the content of the book

I rate this book for one star not because I don't like the content of the book, but because the quality of the book I received is far from satisfaction! i.e. paper quality, text and figures quality are not even close to the ones I have seen before. I strongly suspect this book and the other two books I bought were produced in an inappropriate way!
PS: I bought these books from Singapore.

Fun with FORTRAN

This book is not an opportunity to use the earth to explain continuous media. Continuum mechanics explains much of the behavior that is observed on the earth. S&W is hardcore geophysics - not for the faint-hearted! The book does still use FORTRAN - can we please move on? But the derivation of the wave equation in the second chapter is a key for any PhD wanna-be to learn for their comps.

Difficult, but informative

I had a seismology class from a professor who was hard to learn from. He was just too smart to come down to the level of many undergraduate students. This book did a great job at helping us meet somewhere in between. It was a tough book to follow in some places. Often making leaps from one equation to the next that for anything short of a seismologist or mathematician took minutes and sometimes hours to follow, but when you finally got through a chapter it usually made sense and the book was well compiled.

Great science series....

This entire series of books on animals, their habitats, life cycles, etc. are wonderful! I own 13 of them now. I use these with my first graders during our animal unit. Each book has fantastic pictures and drawings. The information is presented very well but also simply enough that primary aged students can grasp the concepts and find it fascinating. The books also enable themselves to be read in pieces if you want to skip something or focus on a certain area. I highly recommend books by Bobbie Kalman!

In the fall, the students felt that their hard work was rewarded when they were able to harvest vegetables and fruits from the garden. School gardens helped the rest of the pioneers as well. Some of the food grown in school gardens was distributed to families who did not have gardens of their own.

I was incredibly disapointed. I homeschool my children and was looking forward to using some of the material as teaching tools. It's just another picture book with reference to games I already new.

negates the Aryan Superman nonsense

Obscenely biased but good info on Nazi race theory. It negates the Aryan Superman nonsense. The Nazis were far too rational and scientific for such childish notions. This book proves it. I recommend this with Christopher Hutton's "Race and the Third Reich" and V. K. Clark's "Black Nazis II" or Black Nazis III.

A brief but powerful text

Mosse's work on the genesis of european anti semitism is both readable and powerful. Through his exploration of nationalism and catholic history he develops a cogent theory of how the christian attitudes towards Jews were formed. While most study on this topic begins in the 19th century, Mosse is able to link it to a far deeper history and in so doing, greatly improve our understanding of this phenomonon.
Any one who wants to understand the Holocaust's progenitors would do well to start with this important text.

Among her other publications are Ninez: Spanish Songs, Games and Stories of Childhood and De Colores. She and her husband live in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
