Perfect For My Needs...Thirsty For More

I have been learning Latin for a couple of years on my own with an aim to take the AP exam before returning to school. Catullus has always been one of my favorites, having been introduced to him fairly early on (Wheelock's Latin gives you the unaltered "Kisses" poem as an exercise somewhere around the middle of the book). Since I had read the same group of three or four poems again and again and again in my first couple of years of Latin and after reading "Catullus and His World," I was more than ready to sink my teeth into some more Catullus. This book offered a great opportunity.

The notes are convenient and helpful without depriving you of the chance to decipher the grammar for yourself. Here, however, I'll make one suggestion to the reader: if you're a more advanced student, I would suggest reading the copies in the back without the notes, and only reference them if you need to. Intermediate students, on the other hand, should breathe in the notes as they are quite informative. The poems themselves are interesting, well-selected, and well-printed. The only real deficit is one of quantity; I'd love to see something like this for the entire corpus, if anyone has a mind to put together such a volume.

If you're an Australian medical student, it's VERY useful

"Clinical Examination" is pretty much an essential book if you're studying at medical school in Australia. In the 1990s, it replaced much bulkier and more detailed books that were used in the past. Nick Talley and Simon O'Connor have distilled information from various sources into one book - it's not anything groundbreaking, but it's convenient.
Essentially, it's a guide to how to perform take patient histories and perform clinical examinations. It fairly much to the point, with not a lot of waffle, but has the odd bit of very dry "physician humor" to keep you reading. It won't explain a lot - it'll just tell you what to do.
A word of warning outside Australasia - this book does tend to be relatively fine-tuned to the Australian style of clinical examination, which I understand is quite different to, say, US style examination. I'm not sure that it would transport off Australian shores that well.

Worthy of becoming a classic introductory book

This book has become a trusted friend in the minefield of commencing medical examinations on patients.
The initial chapters relate to general principles of history taking and physical examination. Following that are chapters dedicated to each of the systems of the human body, including a section on psychiatry. Finally there is instruction in writing and presenting your findings as well as screening examination formats.
The text is very readable with ample photographs, diagrams and tables to illustrate and clarify the information given. This book is extremely popular with most students I know because it presents the information clearly and with humour.
This book will reward any buyer in their early years of medical examination, and will continue to be useful well into specialization.

it is a (poorly)maintained book from a public library that has been re-sold with stamp marks blacked out. Poor cover, poor spine and marked pages. Not what i expected from the rating or the price. Not happy Amazon.com - not a good deal at all ;(

I have no doubt that college and university Latin students will want their own copies too!

This is a reference book that your students will use. My only complaint is that it is paperback, but a hardbound cover would have added considerably to the weight of this 288 page book. At a time and in a cultural climate that so little values methodical instruction in grammar, the Latin teacher is all the more challenged to find ways and means to inculcate this essential aspect of a classical and highly inflected language. Moreover, with the 'reading method' holding sway in most pre-collegiate Latin classrooms, finding the time and tools to reinforce the grammar and syntax necessary to progress and understanding becomes of paramount importance in our pedagogy. Anna Andresian brings to Looking at Latin (LL) years of experience teaching Latin, clear insight into the language, and a creative enthusiasm for making the 'medicine' of Latin grammar as palatable as possible.

When considering the potential usefulness of LL, it is important to note that the text is intended for middle and secondary school students: details beyond what is essential to a pre-collegiate curriculum are omitted. The 'guts' of Latin grammar are still here, presented logically and in a visually attractive-if necessarily simplistic-manner. Interested students (and teachers) can always find the 'deeper truths' of Latin grammar by excavating one of the larger reference works.

The material in LL is arranged topically and in categories. There is no particular order-although the natural logic of moving from substantives to verbal elements is followed-so LL can be used to support any of the common textbooks. The Table of Contents is the source for topics and order of presentation. Such preliminary but essential matters as Noun Terminology, Agreement of Adjectives, and Verb Terminology are clearly and concisely introduced. Forms are laid out carefully in charts with boldface, color, and other devices used to highlight key and distinguishing features. Relevant exceptions to the rules are noted with helpful mnemonics (if available) and occasional examples. The author is thankfully aware of and sensitive to the more rarefied aspects of Latin grammar and endeavors to present such perennial challenges as participles, indirect statement, the subjunctive, and conditionals clearly and logically. Appendices of full paradigms complement and complete the text. In its presentation of the necessary forms and functions of Latin grammar and syntax ever likely to be encountered by pre-collegiate students, LL is commendable for its thoroughness and clarity.

The goal of Latin pedagogy is naturally to move from objective presentation of the grammar to internal acquisition, apprehension and progressive expertise in translation. Consistent with this goal, the text is replete with features to enable and enhance visual learning. On each page, material relevant to the grammatical topic is presented in flowchart fashion; crucial elements, terms, and concepts are highlighted with arrows, boxes, stars, and scrolls; short Latin sentences (with literal English translation) illustrating the topic are provided; the sentences and colorful cartoons mix Roman and a wide variety of modern cultural themes with a light touch, all intended both to illustrate the grammar and keep youthful attention. Modern Author breathes life and reality into Latin

A far cry from the boring summers of latin i endured in high school in the 60's this book adds pizzazz and order to an ancient language. The simplicity of the text boxes on each page guide one through and unravel the mysteries of syntax at a glance.

Page by page the author takes you effortlessly through the grammar you thought you would never master in a simple way with just the right dose of humor via perky, yet politically correct pictures that will help imprint the grammar in your mind forever.

If your Latin teacher doesn't use this book, suggest it to her/him. Neatly packaged in a large paperback edition, this is easy to read anyplace from a quiet room to a crowded #6 subway train traveling from Queens to Hunter High School or NYU!.

N.B. this isn't a vocabulary book, however after mastering the techniques outlined in this book if you have a working latin vocabulary you will be able to read and string your own sentences and paragraphs in latin in no time at all.

This guide covers many things that a tourist would like to know. But a year old is too old for fast-changing South Africa.
It is nice to see Lonely Planet adding web pages - but I wish there was an index somewhere rather than having to search through the book looking for them once I'm at the computer!

This book changed my life

I was raised in the Christian religion, but stopped attending church at age 13. In the last ten years, I've read lots of spirituality books--mainly Buddhist or Buddhist-inspired--by Pema Chodron, Caroline Myss, Thich Nhat Hanh, Natalie Goldberg, and others. I usually shy away from "Christian" books, but Seeding Your Soul is so much more than that, perhaps because the author is trained in Aikido and seems also Buddhist-inspired.

The book begins with a consideration of trust, illustrated by an unforgettable story of the author's casually religious Italian father and the astonishingly bountiful vegetable garden his deep and loving trust produced in a formerly empty lot behind his tailor shop. Similarly, his joyful wonder whether "there is a tree in here (in the pit of a peach he's just eaten)" yields, after he casually tosses the pit into their back yard, a peach tree that in later years bears fruit. There is no simpler, clearer illustration of the power of being open to wonder and trust.

Each chapter has a similarly striking story to illustrate the author's considerations of generosity, love, transformation, forgiveness, and healing. Chapters subtly build on the ones before them. The exercises at each chapter's end are short, doable, and very much too the point. Usually I skip exercises, but I did all of these, maybe because they didn't demand a huge chunk of time, but could easily be folded into my life. Bit by bit, I found myself moving with the author toward healing, the final chapter. I have gone through the book twice, and both times it took me further in growth, in different areas. I plan to read it again and again. The process is gentle, sometimes humorous, and always loving. I have already enjoyed many of the suggestions for further reading (books) and viewing (movies) that end each chapter--these extend the growth I've experienced in thoughtful and even fun ways.

I have bought copies of Seeding Your Soul for all my friends. It's a great "gift" book, gorgeously produced and a delight to hold and thumb through. The photographs and their captions draw you into the experience, opening you to each step. This book has brought me back to a deep respect for Christianity's teachings, something that had been drummed out of me by a strict, conservative and fundamentalist religious upbringing.

I can't wait for Dianne Costanzo's next book. She is a gifted writer and a spiritual teacher to watch.

I love books. I love it when a book is so crafted that the look, feel and content create a whole, satisfy all my senses and feed my spirit. Seeding Your Soul is such a treasure. It is a book to savor, to ponder and grow with.

About the Author
Marta Weigle has taught anthropology, English, and American studies at the University of New Mexico since 1972. Currently a University Regents Professor in the Anthropology Department, she has chaired that department and the American Studies Department. Among her many books on the Southwest are the co-authored The Lore of New Mexico (1988, 2003), the edited New Mexicans in Cameo and Camera: New Deal Documentation of Twentieth-Century Lives (1985), and the co-edited The Great Southwest of the Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railway (1996) and Telling New Mexico: A New History (2009). She is also the author of Brothers of Light, Brothers of Blood: The Penitentes of the Southwest and its companion A Penitente Bibliography as well as Spiders & Spinsters: Women and Mythology, all from Sunstone Press. In 2005 she received the inaugural State Historian's Award for Excellence in New Mexico Heritage Scholarship from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division.

Kyle Fiore is an artist and writer teaching at the University of New Mexico, fascinated by student minds and possibilities for human peace. She is co-author of Las Mujeres: Conversations from a Hispanic Community (1980).

To Be A Roman is an amazing book. I'm using it with 4th through 6th graders along with an ancient history textbook and it is great! The kids love it - they're totally engaged and I love it because it offers the depth and breadth that I'm looking for. It challenges while still being readable for these kids.

Is your student studying Latin or the time of the Romans? The To Be a Roman workbook introduces students to what basic everyday life was like during the time of ancient Rome.

The fairly short chapters-17 of them-present the basics of Roman society: its social classes, religious life, housing, domestic life, education, slavery, urban life, laws, farming, occupations, travel, trade, measuring of time and space, leisure and entertainment, and the stages in the lives of boys and men, and girls and women. Each chapter in this 168-page workbook includes basic information along with several black and white illustrations or photos of various artifacts. At the end of each chapter are questions to answer, and sometimes a word search or crossword puzzle.

Be warned, there is no answer key. However, you'll find two review chapters plus a bonus chapter of additional resources, including books, films, websites, historical novels, and more.

To Be a Roman is not a comprehensive study of ancient Roman culture, but it does offer insight on everyday life where other materials don't. Be prepared to talk about some of the areas of Roman life that were harsh, such as leaving babies exposed outdoors to die because of a birth defect or the fact that the baby was an unwanted girl. --Jo Dee Soles, Practical Homeschooling

great book for teachers and homeschoolers

The authors of this book have created something very useful for both classroom teachers and parents who homeschool their children. To Be A Roman is one of best "Roman Culture" books that I have read and used in the classroom. Many books discuss the topics in this text (ranging from family dynamics, politics, and the ancient economy), but they are either dreadfully boring or cursory in their coverage. What is great is that this text can fit with almost any learner. For those new to Roman culture, it provides enough preliminary explanation to bring the ancient world to life. For those who know a little about the Romans already, this book provides details that make the Romans seem more human than we accustomed to.

The chapters are delineated by subject. At the end of each chapter there are a variety of exercises. Some test knowledge, others give ideas for projects or research. All of the chapters and their activities are suitable for middle school and high school students.

I would encourage any parent looking to homeschool their children to use this book as part of their curriculum, just as I would encourage any Latin teacher to use it in the classroom as well. The authors are well-respected Classicists who have done a very good job consolidating a lot of information. They also treat the information without adding critical, judgmental comments. Ultimately, this is a well written book that easy to use and should be a part of any Latin teacher's resources.

For anyone who wants a more complete understanding of the Roman culture

"To Be a Roman: Topics in Roman Culture" is a complete and comprehensive guide to what's usually glossed over about this great civilization - the day to day life of its citizens. Touching on the family life, the religious rituals, the homes in which they lived, and the cities they called there own, both Rome and its other cities - and so much more. The perfect resource for anyone who wants a more complete understanding of the Roman culture, "To Be a Roman: Topics in Roman Culture" is a must have for them and community library reference collections.

An excellent classroom resource.

This book is a fabulous resource, both for a traditional classroom or a homeschool environment. Each chapter begins with an article about the chosen topic (Families, Daily Life, Travel, etc.) and then has a combination of review exercises, discussion questions, activities, and games (crosswords, word searches). I really appreciated that the review sections did not simply test students' knowledge, but asked them to apply what they had learned. For example, after learning about the Senate, students are asked to compare it to modern governments, discuss how they would change it, and so on. My students enjoyed this book, which I would often pull out as a precursor to a research project to give them a brief overview, or as a break at the end of a unit. I highly recommend the book, and in fact have purchased additional copies to give to friends who teach as well.

I love Latina Mythica!! It's great for first years. The vocab is on the corresponding pages, so you don't have to go through and keep flipping to the back. The beginning stories are definitely on a level which is accessible for them and they are enjoyable. Good brief intro to mythology in Latin. The kids (even my high schoolers) enjoy reading the myths. They groan at the Latin, but really enjoy the topic. It's also great for comparisons-I teach at a Catholic school, so when we did the chapters with the creation story we talked about the bible's creation story.

I also have to admit I sit and read the stories myself. We aren't very far into the book, so just how difficult it gets I'm not sure-but what I have used of it, I really enjoy. I have my kids do the grammar and reading questions as well to keep them a little more on task. --Kathy Conklin, Latin-bestpractices Yahoo! group

Good text, poor illustrations

This is a good book for those studying Roman mythology and beginner-intermediate Latin. It is similar to Groton's Latin Stories for Wheelock: it has many stories in Latin, each with a helpful vocabulary list, each story a bit more difficult than the previous one. There is also a master vocabulary in the back. The stories are for the most part told well, using the most popular versions. There are English introductions to the stories, including introductions to some famous authors of antiquity. There are a couple of famous drawings, paintings, or sculptures in each chapter, which is nice. At the end of each story there are some study questions which I could do without but some people may find helpful. If there is anything I didn't really like it would have to be the sketches by Christopher White; they are really awful and completely out of place. But all in all a good book, a very good supplement to my Latin studies.
