Life During the Civil War

The biography about Helen Hunt Jackson is a very good book. I think that it helps you learn about how hard life was for many families during the civil war. A couple cool features about this book are that it includes one of her recipes for ginger crisps and 2 of her poems. I liked this book and I recommend it to you.

Life remembered from a rocking chair

"La Sagouine" is a series of monologues written by Antonine Maillet in the Acadian French dialect today called Chiac (shee-ak). The main character, La Sagouine, a poor humble cleaning woman, recounts episodes of her life in her small village. While rocking back and forth on stage she reflects on many aspects of society, often pointing out class differences between rich and poor. Maillet uses La Sagouine's acceptance of her lot to stir outrage in the audience. For example, La Sagouine accepts as perfectly normal that at a public event like the parish Christmas fair, rich children get new toys while the poor get broken hand-me-downs.

The opening sentence immediately defines the character: "J'ai p'têt la face nouére, mais j'ai les mains blanches", or in English "I maybe got a black face, but I got white hands". Her dirty face indicates her low caste while her white hands represent her menial status as a washer woman and also symbolize her engaging honesty.

The original one-woman plays were created on stage by actress Viola Leger and were a staple of French Canadian television in the late 70s and early 80s.

In writing a dialect, Ms. Maillet surpasses, in my mind, Margaret Mitchell's black dialects in "Gone With The Wind" or Emily Bronte's Yorkshire dialect in "Wuthering Heights". The book is short but, in the original French at least, it is long to read because we can't speed read if we want to savour the rich sounds of Chiac.

Success has gone to their heads!

After checking out an older edition of LP's Spain guide ('98 or '97) I decided to order the '99 edition here. When it arrived I noticed immediately that the book was only about 2/3 the size of previous editions. After perusing the contents I could see why. The book contained less content and many more references to other LP guidebooks (eg Trekking in Spain, city guides, etc.) Lonely Planet has obviously pared down their info in each guide in an effort to sell more books! While not a terribly surprising tactic in today's marketplace I nevertheless felt a little cheated. At $21.95 I don't think I'll buy again!

Cultural information useful, hotel and rest info lacking

In the past I have used lonely planet guides several times after a trip to Peru in which the guide was absolutely indespensible. Spain, however, is another story. While LP was useful for walking tours and highlighting major attractions, with good museum and monument descriptions, the hotel and restaraunt recommendations were virtually useless. By this I mean that most recommended restaurants were sketchy looking except for the "expensive" ones and the hotel guide quoted wrong prices and gives no insight into the hotels. Maybe I hadn't realized that I have outgrown Lonely Planet hotels, but then again maybe un-air-conditioned hotels in 100 degree heat (without fans even) are not worth putting in a travel book. The third world seems to be their purview.

This book continues the impressively comprehensive and reliable tradition of their namesake. We used this book in conjunction with Rick Steves' and were overall very satisfied, even considering that we were mid-range travellers. LP covers every nook and cranny of the country with thorough and accurate information. The maps are excellent. The commentary is informative. The organization is easy to follow and understand. My main critique is that the book might be too objective: it's often unclear if the guide is actually recommending a restaurant, hotel, or sight, or just merely mentioning that it exists. The New Bern invasion... and more!

I recently became interested in this topic during a trip to New Bern. The Union Army landed troops on the Outer Banks and later on the mainland. Their enclave would remain until linked up with Sherman. There is a lot of history in this episode of the Civil War, including Unionist intrigues, ex-slaves fighting for freedom, blockade runners, Confederate ironclads, Pickett's Hangings and pillaging incidents. The author does a great job not only making this "sideshow" more understandable but also more interesting. Well-illustrated with maps, photos and artwork.

New edition spares frustration!

Boyd's revised edition of Vergil's Aeneid is the essential book to prepare for the "AP Latin: Vergil" exam or just become familiar with this favorite. With all the lines on the AP syllabus and no more, Boyd's Aeneid effectively prepares students to be familiar with all the lines that may appear on the test. Each page has a paragraph of Latin text, with numerous footnotes underneath, offering translation help through grammar and vocabulary hints. A folded pull-out glossary in back serves as quick reference to unfamiliar words. Everything necessary to translate a passage is listed underneath--a convenient way to study the Aeneid and any other Latin text.
The Introduction puts Vergil's masterpiece in context, with background on Vergil's life, the mythology he drew from, and even the elements of Roman religion referenced. The Grammatical Appendix helps students not only to translate, but also to pronounce the dactylic hexameter as it was meant to be sung. Besides accommodating the aural learners, Boyd's Aeneid also has a map illustrating Aeneas' wanderings for the visual learner.
While Clyde Pharr's edition has been the most esteemed textbook, the Pharr text contains ALL of books 1-6 only, meaning that students have to take home a heavier textbook and also purchase a separate text for books 10-12 of the Aeneid. Thus, Boyd's revision of Pharr makes this edition even better, sparing students from searching for the passages that will actually be covered: it contains only what is on the syllabus. It is the best way to study Vergil's classic epic.

Perfect AP Prep Book

I took the AP Latin exam this year and used this book. It is the absolute best book for the test. There are tons of notes and vocabulary words listed on each well-organized page, so flipping constantly between text and dictionary is avoided completely. the notes help you to understand what is going on for some of vergil's more... obscure phrases.
this is the only book that combines text (only that material required for the AP exam) with review book with dictionary in an easily managed and well organized edition.
if you're taking the AP exam, do yourself a favor and buy this early in the year. work during the year is easier, and studying at the end for the AP is a breeze. BUY IT!!!

Yet all the while, Father Dominguez maintained the keen eye and curiosity of a born observer. From no other document do we learn so much about daily life in raw and remote late colonial New Mexico. How much a nanny goat cost (2 pesos), a fat pig (12 pesos), a trade knife (1 buffalo hide), a captive Indian girl from twelve to twenty years old (2 good horses and assorted dry goods), or the funeral of a Spanish child with tall cross and cope (8 pesos); how to prepare atole or chocolate (not coffee); the resentment of the colony's merchants toward their Chihuahua creditors and the fatalism of New Mexican families living under constant threat of Comanche attack; or where to catch trout--such details abound. Dominguez's superiors, however, resentful of his unflattering wordiness and occasional wit, filed his commentary away unceremoniously and forgot it. Since its rediscovery in 1928 and now published in a new edition, the unparalleled Dominguez report has often been compared to the 1630 and 1634 memorials of Fray Alonso de Benavides. The contrast could scarcely be sharper. Benavides looked out hopefully upon a young colony bent upon the Christian conversion of the Pueblo Indians, and Dominguez saw realistically what an ever more secular world had wrought. Whereas Benavides condemned Pueblo Indian ceremonial kivas as dens of devil worship, Dominguez routinely inventoried them as men's club houses. For their timely views, we are deeply indebted to both men.

Clearly an Important work and Classic even for Insurgency type warfare

This book is an important and must have classic. For those that think that contemporary maneuver war has been replaced by post-modern insugency, don't bet the farm on it just yet. Certainly Mr. Lind in recent years has taken serious heat for his unconventional views ( no pun intended) on warfare; and if you are familiar with some of the controversy or have read his material you must set all that aside and buy this book anyway.

Despite the fact that this author does not have military experience, in hindsight, as a career soldier, I wish now that I would have had the benefit of this book when it was first published in 1985. This book is clearly written, provides first class examples and is the best book on manuever warfare, bar none.

If you are exploring insurgency and asymmetrical warfare you will still need this book.

For students of insurgency and terrorism you will need to buy this book and think about what the author conveys in terms of asymmetrical warfare, you will have new and wonderful revelations about the conduct of insurgency if you do.

This is THE quintessential primer for Maneuver Warriors!

This primer should be on the reading list of every combat arms and combat support officer and NCO in our armed forces. Bill Lind, a civilian without any military experience, has demonstrated an extraordinary understanding of the art of war. His book has become the "underground bible" for Maneuver Warfare proponents. In this book he discusses the theory of Manuever Warfare and its origins, the principles and techniques required to employ maneuver warfare properly, and the education and training required to make it possible. Much of his work is a 'sort-of' adaptation of the sucessful Blitzkrieg theory. He even discusses the differences of bloody, Attrition Warfare (WWI Trenches) versus the more efficient, life-preserving Maneuver Warfare (Desert Storm). Mr Lind puts these thoughts in the simplest terms even a 'butter-bar' lieutenant could understand. He completes his discussion with a series of lessons written by an experienced USMC Field Grade Off! icer on each principle. Following easy lesson is a brief "homework" exercise designed to test your knowledge and understanding of each principle. William Lind's Maneuver Warfare Handbook is a must read for any serious-minded, professional soldier who wishes to become an exceptional leader and tactician.

Superb military theory

This is a truly influential book. It explains the concept of "Maneuver Warfare" and contrasts it with the US Army's attrition based "AirLand Battle Doctrine". It covers topics such as mission orders, recon pull, decision cycles and tempo, use of the reserve, commander's intent, and other key concepts that teach a junior military leader HOW (vs what) to think.
Based on Boyd's revolutionary OODA cycle theories, it shows how a quick acting, agile force can constantly beat larger, heavier equipped foes. After reading this book you will understand exactly why the German Army of 1940-1941 was so effective against the larger and better equipped French-British, and Soviet Armies.
The book is divided into two halves. The critical part is the first half which explains in clear, understandable terms how maneuver warfare works. The second half is a series of tactical decision games that offer practical examples to teach junior leaders these concepts.
This ideas in this small book were adopted almost verbatim by the USMC for their land war doctrine. This doctrine was so effective in combat against the Iraqi's in 1990 that the US VII Corps had to move up its attack by approx 48 hours to prevent the Iraqi's from completely escaping before the marines pushed them completely out of Kuwait.
This book has served for years as an underground "bible" by maneuver warfare officers looking for a resource to help train junior leaders critical maneuver warfare concepts. While many look to technological answers to 4th Generation Warfare, this book give ideas that apply instead to people and tactics. It leaves the reader with a solid understanding on how men make decisions in combat, as well as how to translate that knowledge to a military advantage. It is a MUST HAVE book for Combat Arms officers and junior leaders.
