This graded reader is a wonderful introduction to reading Latin. The passages are edited to allow students with an understanding of Latin grammatical concepts to apply that knowledge. Unlike many recently published textbooks, the notes and vocabulary in Rome and Her Kings are not underneath each passage, but instead are grouped in sections following the passages. While this may result in considerable page flipping for students who wish to use the notes alongside the text, the separation also discourages dependence on the notes, which is all too easy when they are right below the Latin. Thus students who are stuck on a sentence can refer to the notes or glossary in the back for help, but they are encouraged to try translating on their own, which is what `reading' really is.
Moreover, the content of the passages makes this text an even more appealing resource. When I was taking Latin, we memorized the names of the seven Kings of Rome, and so the order of succession was all I knew. This text starts with the destruction of Troy and journey of Aeneas to Italy and goes through the early historical figures and monarchs of Rome individually, providing interesting stories to give meaning to the names. Students can also find a sense of accomplishment in knowing that they are reading the works of Livy, one of the most celebrated historians of Rome. Rome and Her Kings makes reading Latin interesting through a skillful blend of Roman history and Latin grammar.

About the Author
The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo's literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

His plays are still widely admired in France, and anyone who reads Hernani, his first major dramatic work, will see why. Debuting in 1830, it is early Hugo, but much of his greatness is here in near full force: possibly unequaled emotion portrayal, stirring suspense, bittersweet tragedy, high action, grandiloquent dialogue, etc. Anyone who loves these traits in Hugo's novels will enjoy them here. Though not as ambitious, complex, or original as his later prose work, this is a very fine drama that exemplifies Romantic plays and still stands up very well on its own. Those who have been through Hugo's best work and thirst for more would do well to seek out Hernani.

Favorite math workbook

My fourth grader is almost done with this workbook and of all the different math workbooks we've had he likes this the best. We have him do one page every morning before school and the joke are fun. Nice intro to fractions. I just ordered the other books in the series to try them out.

A great introduction to the speeches of Cicero

Although this commentary on one of the most interesting and enjoyable of Cicero's speeches for the modern reader is heavily slanted to the needs of US students for Advanced Placement Latin, it is nevertheless a great introduction to the speeches of Cicero for anyone learning Latin anywhere. There is a lot of help with grammar and vocabulary, and the methodical way in which the structure of Cicero's periods (long, involved sentences) is explained is particularly clear and helpful. The introductory sections giving the context and historical background to the speech are reasonably comprehensive without being unduly detailed. The notes draw fairly heavily on Professor Austin's Oxford University Press commentary, to which reference is made on more detailed points. However, Austin's edition is for the more learned. For anyone still in the Latin learning process, this book is much more accessible.
On the downside, the commentary does not cover the whole speech. Lines 620 to 892 (about a quarter of the whole) are completely without notes or vocabulary, which is probably not a problem for Advanced Placement students, but disappointing for everybody else.

This is the Cicero book needed for AP Latin

This book contains all of the Cicero required for the AP Latin Literature. It says in the preface that this book was designed specifically for AP students. Each section consists of about 30 lines of Latin (two or three "chapters") followed by explanation of words and difficult grammar (and some of it is extremely difficult). It is difficult to translate, but well worth it. This is the epitomy of persuasion.

The Virtues of the Greek Arts and the Ellipsed "esse"

I am a graduate student in a History PhD program. I just finished reading this with three classmates and our professor as part of an intensive summer Latin class geared toward reading comprehension.

I am in no position to critiqe Cicero.

The editor, Prof. Steven M. Cerutti, of East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina, has provided a book which we all found quite useful for our purposes. The running vocabulary list, which lists a word three times before dropping it, was very helpful, though it seemed as though the last definition listed as a possible translation for the word was the most appropriate one. Some footnotes were more helpful than others, and occasionally, our professor interpreted the grammar in a different way than the footnotes, but on the whole, the editor's work was very helpful to us as students. The Prof said it was "adequate."

great first step into unadapted Latin

I used this as one of my main texts in my first graduate Latin course, and it fit the bill perfectly. The introduction was helpful and relevant, and the notes were copious and nearly always helpful. I found it helpful that the running vocabulary was kept separate from the grammatical notes, though this is, I have discovered, somewhat of a standard format. Contrary to another review, I quite liked that several definitions are given in the running vocabulary, rather than simply giving the one that the editor feels is most appropriate for the given context.

I would highly recommend this for anyone from third year high school Latin on up.

The book contains relevant information, vital to the understanding of Cicero and his writing style as well a running list of vocabulary. Students learn easily from this book and complete the course with a much better understanding of Latin and Cicero. This book is particularly good for those students who wish to pursue a career in the field of classics or just enhance their knowledge of Latin. Buy this book!!

Misleading Title - utterly worthless

Titled; The Fourth Dimension in Architecture: The Impact of Building(s) on Behaviour, I expected great things from this book. I expected from the title (as one naturally would) an exploration and analysis of the built environment together with some anthropological, psychological, sociological and philosophical case studies, research and maybe a brief foray into geomancy or what is now referred to as Feng Shui.

Did I get any of that? No, not really! What I got (and this is where the title is just plain dishonest), is a vague non-academic 'study' of the Deere & Co. headquarters in Moline, Illinois. This book NEVER comes close to even considering (let alone addressing) the central thesis of examining the impact of the built environment on the inhabitants. I'm confused... why choose the title? Why not choose, say, A brief study of the Deere & Co. headquarters in Moline, Illinois'? Well, clearly if they did that, no-one (other that Deere employees) would purchase such a text.

Hall & Hall explain that they did not receive any funding for this research, (p.51) and that this is their opinion was a positive thing because it allowed them freedom. However, I can't help but think that the real situation was rather different. Firstly no-one (aside from Deere & Co.) would have an interest in funding this non-academic, non-research masquerading as academia. Secondly, had someone been mad enough to provide funds, they would have wanted something for their investment, some academic paper they could tout around in periodicals and at conferences, there is simply NOTHING in here that even comes close to fulfilling such ideals.

What this book is, is a very vague and limited study of the opinions of less than 5% of the inhabitants of a SINGLE building, before, during and after inhabitation. To call it 'The Impact of Building(s) on Behaviour', is wholly improper and untruthful. In addition, the exact reason as to why this study was so important is never revealed, neither are the findings of the interviews, nor are the data laid open for scrutiny. This 'study' grandstands and fronts as being academia, it hints at being written by Professors in the field and it clearly is not. It is merely the vague observations of a couple who already had publishing deals and who despite being very ill-informed are trying desperately to convince us that they have published something of literary or academic worth, which they simply have not.

The major downfalls of this 'book' would include the following:
i) It is very disorganised and possesses no real structure or cohesion.
ii) There is no bibliography, the cite only one source.
iii) There seems to be no purpose for the 'study', certainly a rationale or governing thesis is never imparted to the reader.
iv) It is written by a couple who are clearly well out of their depth and out of their fields
v) It is never clear what we are given here. Is it supposed to be a serious academic or architectural study? or just a serious of musings and anecdotes? Who knows?

If you have found this book, and unless your tutor has set it as prescribed reading (please ask them why!) don't even bother with this book. it serves no purpose whatsoever, and should slip quietly out of print. it is utterly without a redeeming feature.

About the Author
Barbara Weiden Boyd is Henry Winkley Professor of Latin and Greek at Bowdoin College, where she teaches courses in Greek and Latin languages and literatures, classical mythology, the city of Rome, Ovid s influence and reception, epic poetry, and other classical topics. She received her PhD in Classical Studies from the University of Michigan, and is the author or editor of several scholarly books and numerous articles on Latin literature, especially the poetry of Vergil and Ovid.

This is the perfect text for AP Latin in high school or for ...

This is the perfect text for AP Latin in high school or for any college course! Containing all the passages relevant to the new AP Exam and a great deal more besides, this is the most user-friendly Virgil text on the market. Boyd gives clear definitions of obscure words and explains difficult passages, provides a foldout vocabulary list of the epic's most high-frequency words, and explains the references in the text which, while understood by Virgil's original audience, are often obscure today. This text allows the student to actually read and enjoy the Aeneid (arguably the greatest epic poem of antiquity...apologies to Homer who is Virgil's only rival) without constantly resorting to a dictionary or an index of proper names. I will be using this text with my upcoming AP Latin class. It is no small thing to create a text as well suited as this one to the needs of students who can learn to appreciate the inestimable beauty of Virgil. I also highly recommend the teacher's guide for its excellent literal translation and questions for in-class discussion. The growing number of schools dedicated to the Classical curriculum, and any institution offering Latin, will find in this text a welcome ally in making Virgil accessible in our time. Macte!

Incredibly abundant notes and commentaries on grammars, sentence structures and historical reference. I highly recommend this book for self-learning or textbook at class.

''Author and veteran journalist Jeanne Toomey is no stranger to the Hamptons, nor to the worlds of high society and crime. She owned a home in Southampton for many years, with her husband, Jim Gray, a former Cleveland Police lieutenant, and she covered many murders for New York City papers and other dailies around the country. Now she has combined her vast police and detective knowledge in her first book, Murder in the Hamptons, staging three society-related deaths right here on the East End. Perhaps in her continued passion for solving mysteries, much of Toomey's book is autobiographical. She has cast herself as private investigator Liz Grady, and her partner in crime is a local police detective, Walt Herrick. Toomey sweeps the reader into her book with the suspicious drowning of a society woman on Dune Road in Southampton, who was a champion swimmer and a friend of Liz Grady's. Grady is called to help in the local investigation, which leads to her involvement in subsequent murders. She notices a pattern to all the killings, besides the fact that all of them involve people on the Blue Book Committee. One of them is an author, who is stabbed with a letter opener, and the third victim is another society woman who dies mysteriously because of a passion for her rose garden. Throughout the book, which is available in all Book Hamptons and at Canio's Books in Sag Harbor, there are references to local names and places, some of which have been changed. Several local newspapers are mentioned, including The East Hampton Independent, The Southampton Press, and The Sag Harbor Express. Toomey also makes reference to local establishments including Gurney's Inn, The American Hotel, Lobster Inn, Driver's Seat, Rogers Memorial Library, to places such as Cow Neck Farm, Gondola Gardens, and Little Fresh Pond, and to local people, including Robert D. L. Gardiner, the late Dr. Emma Bellows of Hampton Bays, Victoria Gardner, Ted Conklin, and various local police chiefs.

The book is fun and fast reading, since the author's journalistic style comes through with brevity, punch, and wit. In her tough newspaper style, Toomey's quotes and descriptions are clear, crisp, and to the point. There are no ponderous paragraphs here, so the story moves quickly. In her sense of detail with each deadly deed, the reader can sense Toomey's keen interest in crime stories. Before writing this book, she wrote often for various 'who dunnit?' detective magazines. Her passion for danger and adventure started early, as one of the city's youngest crime reporters, for The Brooklyn Eagle in 1943. At 21, Toomey was covering some of the top homicides in the metro area. She was assigned to Brooklyn Police Headquarters at Bergen Street, where she got an exclusive story on the disappearance of John Flaherty, head of the grain handlers union of the International Longshoreman's Association. She also covered part of the Alger Hiss trial, and the famous trial of Benjamin Feldman, a druggist who killed his wife and mother-in-law with strychnine. At The Eagle during the '50s, Toomey was assigned to cover ship news in the New York Harbor, where she boarded the ocean liners traveling to Europe. Here she interviewed such notables as Winston Churchill, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Charles Boyer, and Alan Ladd. She later went to work at The Journal American, King Features Syndicate, and the Associated Press. About the Author
Jeanne Toomey takes credit for not being the best journalist in America, but almost surely the one who has worked for the most journals of record--from small weeklies like the Calexico Chronicle to the Associated Press and King Features Syndicate where she acknowledges she was the worst food editor in America. ''My cooking has cured the dogs of begging at table?'' is her claim. Though mainly a journalist, she has also handled society public relations accounts. Jeanne's second book was Assignment Homicide, also published by Sunstone Press.
