the maps need help

I just returned from two months in Pakistan, and I primarily used the Lonely Planet. Using the Lonely Planet for travel can tend to give one the feeling that all countries look and taste the same, and are inhabited by mostly backpackers and english-speaking hotelkeepers. The hotels recommended manage to sustain a surprisingly similar clientele throughout the Middle East and South Asia at least, and it starts to wear thin after a bit. The maps of many cities were not up to LP standards, Peshawar's Old City being a notable example. The Rawalpindi section could use an update, and I must say that the food recommendations generally seem to be stabs in the dark, in which case one is better off stabbing in the dark according to his own tastes. Accomodation selection criteria must be devoid of any Architectural or historical interest factors, but is quite successfully utilitarian. Many wonderfully intriguing and inexpensive old hotels are skipped. The ubiquity of this guide tends to ghetto the Western backpackers in little enclaves, useful both if you wish to avoid them like the plague, or you relish their company. The historical notes are surprisingly knowledgeable in most areas, though some notes concerning the British Raj period are either tritely anti-colonial or of dubious veracity, sometimes both. The Paksitani bureaucracy is a much more flexible entity than the authors would suggest, and things like Foreigner's Registration and exit taxes are not necessarily carved in stone. In conclusion, this guide definitely caters to the trek-minded eco-groover, with disproportionate emphasis laid on the Northern Areas, and on repeating tired environmentalist mantras.

About the Author
BEN DURR, a farm boy from Lincoln County, Mississippi, has lived in Texas the past 40 years and is currently CEO of Memorial Hospital in Uvalde, Texas. He spends free time with his wife, three children and three grandchildren at his wife's Casa de Leona Bed & Breakfast on the Leona River. Growing up on a farm with sharecroppers gave him insight on the cultural and societal structures of the South. Durr has visited all the sites involved in the Battle of San Jacinto and has spent the last 20 years researching, collecting and refining the spurious details of the heroine in this book, his first novel.

ANNE CORWIN spent the first 10 years of her life in the mountains of Colombia where her parents were missionaries. Following her marriage and birth of her daughter, she gained a master's degree in social work. After years of experience in journalism, she has spent much of her adult life traveling, taking her personal sense of God into the worlds of professional charity and public opinion. Living in a cabin near the Nueces River, she now tends a garden and finds herself amazed to be in Texas.

This reviewer says further: Exactly who is Miss Emily Rose? She's the hypothetical angel in the whirlwind battle for Texas' independence from Mexico, who captivates the imagination and leads the reader across several generations of family, Texas, and American history.

MISS EMILY is written in the cinemagraphic style, which shows what the characters are doing and experiencing, rather than merely telling the story, but the authors, Ben Durr and Anne Corwin, have not simply painted vibrant characters on the canvas. They have delicately brushed in the subtleties that bring the characters to life.

For example, when Emily de Zavala's husband dies in Chapter One, she had not seen her cousin Rose for some months and did not recognize her. At the funeral Emily saw an almost familiar female figure among the mourners. ". . . A heavy veil concealed her face; her black dress of coarse cotton showed the tops of well-worn shoes. The woman was surely not of her circle. And yet there was a rare grace about her and that slim figure had a familiar shape. She knew that shape, if she could only remember . . ." When the above passage continues, ". . .But the memories were scrambled and she stood silent. The baby began to whimper in Mr. Smith's arms. The children tugged at her skirt," the authors engage the senses as well as the reader's mind.

Anyone who has ever grieved at the funeral of a loved one, has experienced those perfectly described scrambled memories. Seconds later, the reader almost hears the baby's low cry and feels Mrs. de Zavala's other children tugging on the hem of her dress.

You will want to add this novel to your private collection if you enjoy epic sagas that are fictionalizations of actual events. In this case, the Battle of San Jacinto.

Beautifully written and skillfully crafted, "MISS EMILY" resonates with the ring of authenticity of place and time to the extent that the reader will feel as if he/she is reading a memoir rather than historical fiction.

MISS EMILY, the Yellow Rose of Texas is definitely not in the romance genre, but romance is woven as tightly as Texas barbed-wire around this historical narrative that is a must read!

Here are Haroldie and Sammie Kent, two young black children who were at the forefront of school desegregation in the 1950s; here's Marion Russell, who, with her mother, Eliza, was part of a wagon train down the Santa Fe Trail in the early 1800s; here are Douglas MacArthur and Billy the Kid, before they became (respectively) a general and a gunslinger. It's a unique and vastly informative book; drawing on oral histories, the stories are often told in the subjects' own words, and the richness of detail tells us as much about the past as it does about childhood. RICHARD MELZER is a professor of history at the University of New Mexico/Valencia Campus. A prize-winning teacher and a popular public speaker, he is the author of many books and articles about the American Southwest. Sunstone Press is the publisher of Melzer's focused biography, Ernie Pyle in the American Southwest as well as Breakdown: How the Secret of the Atomic Bomb Was Stolen During World War II and Buried Treasures: Famous and Unusual Gravesites in New Mexico History. He is also the author of Coming of Age in the Great Depression.

This is a little jewel of a book. Spanish teachers looking for "bell work" ideas or "sponge" activities will enjoy this extensive riddle collection featured along with their English translation. At the same time, anyone solely interested in the language or the culture will be entertained by this book in a charming way. The De Bello Gallico of Julius Caesar has been a staple of second-year Latin programmes for many centuries. This work, however, is far too long to be covered entirely in one course, and it has always been the task of the professor to determine which books and chapters of the Gallic Wars were to be surveyed. The recent decision to set a syllabus for De Bello Gallico in the Advanced Placement Latin literature course has simplified this task immensely. This new students' edition of De Bello Gallico, prepared by Hans-Friedrich Mueller, has been issued to address the new AP syllabus.

It is a pleasure to say that Mueller succeeds admirably in this. The presentation of the text has been done according to the pattern of Clyde Pharr's classic edition of the Aeneid: the Latin text with vocabulary and notes on each page. Words in the text that the student has met previously are in italic font; the remainder of the words are to be found in the following vocabulary. There are also copious notes on a variety of subjects: linguistic, stylistic, military, and cultural. Furthermore, in addition to a complete glossary of the words found in De Bello Gallico, there is also a fold-out vocabulary sheet listing high-frequency vocabulary (which would be those words in italic font). This will prove quite worthwhile for the student who is reading along in the text, so that one will not lose his or her place in the text by having to stop and refer to the glossary or to a dictionary. This work includes, along with the Latin text, English translations of all chapters not presented in the original Latin; this, too, meets the requirements of the new AP Syllabus.

There is a very useful appendix containing the grammatical and rhetorical features used by Caesar in De Bello Gallico. This appendix supplements the references to these literary figures that are found in the various footnotes, and helps the student begin to understand the nature of Latin style. Finally, there is a quite complete and highly appropriate introduction containing biographical and literary information about Julius Caesar and his motivations for writing. There is, as well, an informative discussion of the nature and organisation of the Roman army. This helps to clarify for the student the nature and the importance of that institution.

About the Author
Hans-Friedrich Mueller, PhD, a.k.a. Molinarius, serves as the William D. Williams Professor and Chair of Classics at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He is a recipient of the American Philological Association's Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Classics as well as two awards for excellence in teaching at Florida State University. He developed a graduate distance program in classics for high school teachers and was himself a high school Latin teacher for six years. Mueller is the author of Roman Religion in Valerius Maximus (Routledge, 2002), the editor of an abridgment of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (Modern Library, 2003), and the translator of Mehl's Roman Historiography (Wiley-Blackwell, 2011). Molinarius's high school teaching experience (combined with insights gained from four school-age daughters) has served him well as author of this text and as co-author (with Rose Williams) of Caesar: A LEGAMUS Transitional Reader (Bolchazy-Carducci, 2012).

Amazing!!!

I purchased this to use with my freshman English class because I've discovered that kids are coming to us with little skill in grammar, spelling, or punctuation. I copied the tasks into SmartBoard documents, and my students work on them each day. One of the new teacher evaluation tools used in my state has performance tied to ACT scores, and my district mandated that we work on ACT prep every day. This book is my ticket to paradise as far as that's concerned. It helps me detect deficiencies in grammar so that I can provide more intense instruction as needed. I also like that each week is focused on a different topic, whether comics or cacti. It's a tremendous resource.

Excellent book

I purchased this book for my 9th grader's daily practice in Korea. It has a short but very useful project for each day. It is very helpful to learn or review a language skill for his age. I love this book.

Thomas Edward ('Black Jack') Ketchum (October 31, 1863 April 26, 1901) was executed for an attempt to hold up the C. & S. train between Des Moines and Folsom in the northeaster corner of New Mexico. His other daring deeds as a desperado were not considered by the court. Ketchum, whose career began as an humble horse thief, wrote his own ticket with tragic results. This new edition in Sunstone's Southwest Heritage Series includes a new foreword by Marc Simmons, an excerpt from F. Stanley's biography by Mary Jo Walker, and a tribute to F. Stanley by Jack D. About the Author
F. Stanley (Father Stanley Francis Louis Crocchiola) was a history buff whose curiosity and inner fire drew him to the study of people and places and events that had gone unnoticed until he saw them. It has been said that he wandered across the American Southwest like a Johnny Appleseed of history, planting seedlings in the form of booklets and leaving their later nurturing to others. 'An easterner by birth but a southwesterner at heart, Father Stanley Francis Louis Crocchiola had as many vocations as names,' says his biographer, Mary Jo Walker. 'As a young man, he entered the Catholic priesthood and for nearly half a century served his church with great zeal in various capacities, attempting to balance the callings of teacher, pastor, historian and writer.' With limited money or free time, he also managed to write and publish one hundred and seventy-seven books and booklets pertaining to his adopted region under his nom de plume, F. Stanley, The initial in that name does not stand for Father, as many have assumed, but for Francis, which Louis Crocchiola took, with the name Stanley, at the time of his ordination as Franciscan friar in 1938. All of F. Stanley's titles have now reached the status of expensive collector's items.

My Home Town-Clayton NM

I was raised just outside Clayton, New Mexico, where the hanging took place. The pictures of the Blackjack hanging were placed in the window of the Eckland Hotel in Clayton (circa 1947) and we kids were totally fascinated with them, even if they were gory.

The pictures are still on display at the hotel but now in the bar.

Having some knowledge of Blackjack, i can say the story was pretty factual

My uncle was also involved in teaching and school administration all over this area, so I had a number of opportunities to vist many of the communities mentioned in the book .
