La Conquistadora, The Story of the Oldest Statue of the Virgin Mary in the United States, by Sue Houser

The oldest image of the Virgin Mary in the United States--a petite wooden statue--accompanied Spanish Conquistadors and missionaries to the Kingdom of Nuevo Mexico in 1625. Her existence has been tumultuous. She was rescued from a burning church, kidnapped and held for ransom, and had her wooden form mutilated and remade. This book conveys the essence of devotion given to the statue who is yearly celebrated at La Fiesta de Santa Fe and yearly carried in procession based on a promise made over 300 years ago. She is the Queen of New Mexico, enthroned in her own chapel at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in the heart of Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has the wardrobe of a Spanish Queen with over 200 exquisite gowns and priceless crowns and jewelry. Her name is La Conquistadora, ''Our Lady of the Conquest.'' Was she a conqueror of territories or a conqueror of hearts and healer of human weaknesses? This is her story.

Finding Heart in the Conquest
By Dino Leyba
As I read the book, I found myself inspired, walking the journey along with our beloved Lady as she made her way to the Basilica of St. Francis in Santa Fe. I will visit her there each and every time I visit the City Different as she now has found a special place in my heart because of this wonderful book. Read on, enjoy!

Wonderfu! I learned something
By Irene I. Blea
I'm a native New Mexican and often write about the land of my birth. I thought I knew the story of La Conquistadora. However, I've just finished reading Sue Houser's new book, La Conquistadora (Sunstone Press). It is wonderful! The book puts into historical perspective the story of the statue of the Virgin Mary and how it came to the "New World." I knew most of the saint's history, its journey into New Mexico and how the residents of the state where enchanted with her. However, I did not know the contemporary, international, story of the saint so elegantly displayed in the Catholic Cathedral and Basilica in Santa Fe. The Lady is not only internationally famous, but she has a rich wardrobe; and as Ms. Houser notes, a collection of jewlery worthy of a queen. Further, the photos in the book are lovely, done with reverance; and the stories of people devoted to the Queen of New Mexico are spiritually motivating. I want to visit the blessed statue again because now I know of her fame outside of New Mexico and the stories of those that construct and donate to her wardrobe; some of them are famous. Do yourself a favor, find out why Sue Houser has joined thousands of people who lost their heart to the much loved virgencita. Enjoy the insights gained in this book. Blessings

and beautiful dresses and their makers for those interested in art
By c johnson
Sue Houser has certainly gifted us with her stories of La Conquistadora, which add depth and understanding to the history of New Mexico. This statue represents far more than a representation of the Virgin Mary, she also sheds light on those people who followed her on her faith journeys from Spain to Santa Fe, to El Paso and back again. No wonder she is held in such high regard! Houser deftly weaves the history of the church, the people and the image into a fascinating tale brimming with fires, rough roads and a kidnapping for the adventurous, and beautiful dresses and their makers for those interested in art. This quiet little book will be a blessing

Hispano Homesteaders, The Last New Mexico Pioneers, 1850-1910, by F. Harlan Flint

After Santa Fe was founded in 1610, the Hispano people were restless to expand their colony. They slowly pushed their borders to the north, establishing little villages along the Rio Grande and dozens of its tributaries. Their progress was often interrupted, first by the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and later by fierce resistance from the native people whose territory they were invading. Nonetheless, over the centuries of Spanish and Mexican rule, their frontier plaza villages survived. During their long journey, these unique people retained a strong sense of their Spanish identity and tradition. Most remarkably, they also continued to speak a version of castellano, the sixteenth century language of Cervantes. Historians usually say that the outer boundary of the Hispano homeland was defined by the 1860s or 1870s. But the last of the Hispano homesteaders were not finished and continued to create new settlements in the final decades of the nineteenth century and even the early years of twentieth century. This is the never before told story of a few of these New Mexico Hispanos, among the last pioneers, who made their home along a little known river in the high mountain wilderness at the northern edge of New Mexico. And it was happening at just about the time that New Mexico became a state.

New Mexico Mavericks (Hardcover), by Marc Simmons

"I first saw New Mexico as a kid, in 1950," the author says. "At once I fell under its hypnotic spell, as have so many others. My commitment to become a writer about things New Mexican was born shortly thereafter. From more than a half century of prowlings along the byways of the state, I've managed to glean a fair knowledge of its peoples and culture. "What continues to impress me is that history in New Mexico lies so close to the surface. Here one continually runs into Indians, Hispanos and fourth or fifth generation Anglos whose lives and outlook are firmly rooted in the years before yesterday. Moreover, their personal histories are enriched by the backdrop of an extraordinary landscape. These realities have provided me an abundance of material for carving out the series of short narratives compiled in the book." Marc Simmons is a professional author and historian who has published more than forty books on New Mexico and the American Southwest. His popular "Trail Dust" column is syndicated in several regional newspapers. In 1993, King Juan Carlos of Spain admitted him to the knightly Order of Isabel la Católica for his contributions to Spanish colonial history.

BILLY’S BOYHOOD

Billy the Kid had a short life! He was only twenty-one when Sheriff Pat Garrett shot him dead at Fort Sumner, New Mexico on July 14, 1881. All of the events that made him famous were crowded into the three years preceding his death.

The boyhood of Billy the Kid, therefore, formed a major part of his life. For most of it, we have only fragmentary information, and some episodes of his youth are mired in controversy.

Some twenty years ago I was invited to Silver City to speak at the dedication of a new state historical marker for the local Pioneer Cemetery. The most noted person buried there, I observed at the time, was Catherine Antrim, Billy’s mother. She had died of tuberculosis in 1874 when he was fifteen.

The older histories acknowledged that Billy had spent his teens in Silver City, but they were fuzzy about how he got there and where he had been born. Historians have recently filled in a few of the pieces.

We now believe that Billy was born in the Irish slums of New York City, at 210 Greene Street, to be specific. He was christened Henry McCarty at the nearby Church of St. Peter.

About 1864 Billy’s father died, and his mother Catherine took him and his older brother Joe to Indiana. There she established a relationship with one William H. Antrim who was thirteen years her junior.

Together, they all moved to Wichita, Kansas about 1870 where Antrim tried his hand at farming and Catherine McCarty took in laundry. By 1871, they had gone to Denver and two years later popped up in Santa Fe.

There on March 1, 1873 Catherine McCarty finally made things legal, by marrying William Antrim at the First Presbyterian Church. Her two young sons stood up as witnesses.

Almost immediately, the family headed down to Silver City. They may have decided that the climate in that corner of the Territory could benefit Catherine, who suffered from an advanced case of tuberculosis.

They settled into a log house at the end of Main Street, and Antrim began odd-jobbing and perhaps doing a little prospecting. His youngest step-son, Henry McCarty, was now being called Henry Antrim.

For reasons not clear, a few folks referred to him as Billy Antrim, the name of his step-father. Later, others would call him Kid Antrim. And eventually out of all of this came the coining of the moniker Billy the Kid, perhaps the most celebrated outlaw name in the annals of the Old West.

Billy, it seems, always looked younger than his true age. Hence, the nickname Kid. One of his childhood chums, Anthony Conner, said years later that Billy was "really girlish looking."

In fact, there is some reason to believe that when several Silver City schoolboys appeared in a stage production at Morrill’s Opera House, young Billy Antrim (formerly Henry McCarty) played the part of a girl.

Several of Conner’s other recollections of the future outlaw are revealing. "In those days, Billy was one of the best boys in town," he said. "He was very slender, weighed over 75 pounds, and had coal black hair and eyes."

"He got to be quite a reader, too. He was always sprawled out somewhere reading a book, when he wasn’t working at Knight’s Butcher Shop. Finally he took to reading the Police Gazette and dime novels."

That Billy cut his teeth on the Police Gazette, which featured crime stories, is certainly curious since he himself would make his mark on history as a criminal. Then of course, within twenty years, Billy the Kid would be a recurring figure in dime novels, the trashy literature consumed by the masses.

On the whole, however, the boy’s youth seems to have been pretty tame and those who actually knew him then would claim afterward that he had been well behaved. The popular story, occasionally still heard today, that Billy had gunned down a man who insulted his mother, is pure fiction--part of the legend fabricated by dime novelists and others.

It was after Mrs. Antrim died in 1874 that her son, without her restraining hand, started to go astray. Billy’s step-father gave him little attention and the boy engaged in some petty thefts.

At one point, he and a pal stole a basket of clothes from a Chinese laundry, mainly as a prank. But easy-going Sheriff Harvey Whitehill thought Kid Antrim needed to be taught a lesson, so he jailed him.

Anthony Conner believed the sheriff merely wished Billy to understand where such conduct might lead. Instead, the boy made a daring escape by climbing up the jailhouse chimney.

He fled to Arizona Territory where in 1877 he killed near Camp Grant his first man, a blacksmith who bullied him. From there, Billy the Kid made his way to New Mexico’s Lincoln County to keep a date with his destiny.

Adèle Hugo: La Misérable, by Leslie Smith Dow

Victor Hugo didn't much care for Adèle because he was never sure she was his daughter. Even so, he made her join the rest of his family as they shared his exile on the island of Jersey. Adèle was virtually imprisoned. The lack of outlets for her artistic gifts cramped her mind, and daily seances loosened her grip on reality. No wonder she fell in love with a feckless English soldier, Albert Andrew Pinson. His ardour for everything about her except her money cooled rapidly, but her passion for him burned white hot. Adèle dogged Pinson's footsteps, first to Halifax and then to Barbados, sometimes in a state of dementia. At last, a former slave rescued her from a Bridgetown street and took her home to France. Victor committed Adèle to an asylum, and there she stayed for the rest of her life, even though she was at times no less lucid than he.

Review
Love ItBy H. Watson on May 15, 2007Format: PaperbackAnyone who is fascinated with this woman will love this book, as there is not much out there about her!

A great buy, well worth the money, it explains a lot that happened in the movie too.

Review of Leslie Smith Dow's other work: "As a young child I was enthralled with the popular musical, The King and I. The story had all the makings of a perfect fairy tale, with Anna captivating the heart of the King of Siam. Now, with a new film version of The King and I about to be released I wanted to find out more about the real woman behind the well known legend.
Through extensive research and detective work, author Leslie Smith Dow has successfully peeled back the layers of myth to reveal a very different, but equally extraordinary Anna. Through her research she debunks some of the details of Anna's early life revealing a very unromantic childhood of poverty and squalor. This book took me right into the heart of this extraordinary woman as she struggled to survive as a young widow with two small children. Her life as a Governess at the Saimese Court was fascinating, but equally impressive was the life she led after leaving Siam. I was very interested to read of her many accomplishments in Canada after moving to Halifax Nova Scotia with her daughter and son-in-law. She worked very hard to make her mark on both Halifax and Montreal leaving a lasting legacy of work that remains to this day.
Leslie Smith Dow has done a remarkable job of giving us a true portrait of Anna Leonowens and I highly recommend this book."

From the Back Cover
Ottawa writer Leslie Smith Dow bases Adèle Hugo's sad yet exciting life story on Adèle's own diaries, the Hugos' voluminous correspondence, and recollections written by friends of this strange family. Adèle Hugo: La Misérable, her second biography, follows the highly acclaimed Anna Leonowens: A Life Beyond the King and I. For more historical biography, try out The Diary of Death: 1819

Good detail, too much personal politics
By Mark Kittell
My assessment of this book, one of the few providing a full examination of the subject, is an "average"--meaning that for its detail it is worthy of five stars, but the relative lack of objectivity by the author calls its credibility into question. Adele is of course a "victim" of the "patriarchy," although even Dow is forced to admit that her actions were in large part influenced by neo-feminist George Sand, and not for particularly positive results. We are told Adele supposedly had potential to be a great writer, even more so than her father, although this is just a "conjecture" on Dow's part, because much of Adele's writing was done in almost indecipherable code that only she could fully comprehend (and also could have been evidence of her growing madness). The credibility of the author is particularly questionable in regard to Adele's father, Victor Hugo--who even more than Albert Pinson is the "villain" of the story. Not only does Dow ignore his progressive politics which included support for universal suffrage, but attempts to degrade his literary accomplishments at every opportunity (there is no mention, for example, of the universally-acclaimed The Hunchback of Notre Dame or Les Miserables; to do so would expose her opinions to more obvious ridicule).

Victor Hugo in this narrative is nothing more than a womanizer, a domestic tyrant and a over-rated poet and author of whom there is no logical explanation for his fame. As for Pinson, it has to be admitted that for all his personal failings, one could not truly blame him for his attitude toward Adele. After all, it was she who casually turned down his marriage proposal for the sake of her feminist theories, and her subsequent pursuit of him seemed to him evidence of a very bizarre and unstable personality (which was, in fact, the case). Sure, he took money from her like she used her father like a bank, but whose fault was that?

Still, the book manages to give the impression that a great deal of effort went to uncovering as much detail as possible into the life of Adele Hugo, and in fact there is no denying that sometimes fact can be more fascinating than fiction. Even Dow cannot entirely white-wash the sad reality of her life, since simply in its telling one cannot escape the sense of a life terribly misguided by emotional an mental instability.

The Tragic Days of Billy the Kid (Southwest Heritage), by Frazier Hunt with a New Foreword

Since a July night in 1881 when he was shot down at the age of 21, Billy the Kid has been a victim of the myths that surrounded and captured him. This vivid interpretation of the Kid's life and character will come as an exciting revelation to readers who may have been familiar only with the earlier fictionalized versions. For here is real, moving tragedy painted in broad brush strokes with the vivid hues of the stark American Southwestern landscape.

Never before has there been brought into true focus the Lincoln County War, which broke out in 1878 in the then Territory of New Mexico, and which furnished the background and the period for the adventures of this extraordinary boy. The literature concerning both the desperate cattle war and the singular young outlaw have necessarily been constructed around a thin framework of fact with its papier mache façade of myth and legend.

So persistent have been these legends that the true character of the Kid seemed almost beyond reach. Indeed, the Western poet, Arthur Chapman, once wrote that ''Billy the Kid must remain wholly the most unaccountable figure in frontier history.''

About the Author
Frazier Hunt (1885 - 1968) had the good fortune to have access to a great mass of fresh and unpublished source material which fully documents this thrilling history of the Kid and his times. It is a new and rather appealing boy who now comes to light--an alert, likeable yet tough youngster, adored by the native Mexicans no less for his fluency in Spanish than for his kindness and consideration, but no wanton killer. In place of the former distorted figure of legend, a young man of flesh and blood and heart emerges into clear perspective. So at last we have the real Billy the Kid--authentic, true--and completely accountable.

Compelling
By Jeff M. Schwehn
This compelling journalistic narrative of the life of Billy the Kid was the first to utilize the vast collection of documents and interviews gathered by Maurice Garland Fulton and J. Evetts Haley on Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War. However, Hunt's imagined thoughts and dialogue attributed to Billy and his associates and adversaries need to be taken with several grains of factual salt. Still, Hunt manages to capture better than many other narrators the context of frontier New Mexico and how frontier Lincoln County events and surroundings snatched away not only Billy's hopes and dreams but his life as well.

This provided some great resources for our recent visit, but the book is outdated. If you plan an activity based on this book's recommendation be sure to call or check a website to make sure the attraction still exists.

Breezy, Practical
By Lynn Michelsohn
Both this guide and "Children's Guide to Santa Fe" provide basic information about the usual activities and attractions popular with children in Santa Fe: the Children's Museum, Palace of the Governors, the Plaza, and lots of others. Both are great guidebooks written for parents to help them select places to visit and activities to include when they take their children to Santa Fe.

This guide is more informal than the other--breezy even--and its information seems more personalized, yet practical. It focuses more on outdoor activities, but also includes useful descriptions of child-friendly (yet interesting) restaurants. It is shorter and a little cheaper than the other.

You will likely be happy with either guidebook to help you select activities for your children to enjoy in the wonderful place that is Santa Fe.

Of course, if you are looking for a guide that is written for children rather than for parents--one that can be your child's own--I recommend I See Santa Fe!: A Children's Guide and Coloring Book

I actually bought this book while at Auschwitz. It was recommended by our tour guide-one Stanislaw Macksaw-who was a Polish survivor of a German work camp and who lost relatives to both the Germans and the Russians. The book recounts the various perspectives of three SS camp workers; a repentant guard, an unrepentant doctor and the fairly straightforward account of the camp commandant while he was awaiting execution, who looks to neither repent or gloat but to leave a record of his actions for history to judge. Different motives drove each to write his particular section and each gives the reader some insight into the mind of the Allegemeine SS. The camp commandant's piece reads like a bureaucrat's account of his seemingly mundane job, leaving the reader with little insight into the evil which was served. The guard seeks to expiate some of his guilt for the crimes which he was a part of, while the doctor revels in the wickedness of which he was a part without acknowledging any guilt. A good book for those with an interest in the Holocaust or World War II history.

From someone who visited Auschwitz
By CdnGinger
I read this book while I was living in Poland, before visiting Auschwitz. I highly recommend it as it provides an interesting glimpse into the minds of the men who ran the camp. The most interesting account is that of Dr Kremer, one of the most instrumental figures in the exterminations. His account is in the form of a diary, where the news of extermination is side by side with more mundane things like the purchase of new buttons for a coat or the consumption of roast beef for dinner. A thoroughly interesting and excellent book.

Corroborating Evidence IV, A True Crime Story, by William T. Rasmussen

In Corroborating Evidence IV, William Rasmussen, author of four previous true-crime books, continues his investigation into famous, unsolved criminal cases by focusing on two separate, unrelated stories. The first zeroes in on the Cleveland Torso Murders committed between 1934 and 1938, where someone killed and expertly dismembered at least twelve victims in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1938, a letter by someone claiming to be the Torso Killer was mailed from Los Angeles to Cleveland's Chief of Police Matowitz. Approximately eight years later on January 7, 1946, six-year-old Suzanne Degnan was killed and expertly dismembered in Chicago. A seventeen-year-old by the name of William Heriens eventually pled guilty to the Degnan murder and two other murders. In July, 1946, Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia) was in Chicago ''terribly preoccupied with the details of the Degnan murder.'' Less than six months later the Black Dahlia was killed and expertly severed in Los Angeles. Was the Cleveland Torso Killer also responsible for the murders of Suzanne Degnan and the Black Dahlia? ''If so, then is William Heriens wrongly incarcerated for crimes he did not commit?'' the author asks. ''I think he was.'' The second investigation turns the spotlight on the Zodiac Killer, who was responsible for at least six murders in California between 1966 and 1969. On October 30, 1966, eighteen-year-old Cheri Jo Bates was brutally murdered in Riverside, California. On December 20, 1968, sixteen-year-old Betty Lou Jensen and seventeen-year-old David Arthur Faraday were killed near Vallejo, north of San Francisco. Someone who identified himself as the ''Zodiac'' claimed to be the killer. He sent taunting letters, notes, greeting cards, codes, secret messages and hidden clues to newspapers and the police, and the killings continued. To this day the identity and location of the Zodiac remain unknown. The author says, ''I think there is a high probability that the Zodiac is still alive and currently incarcerated for some other crime.'' Rasmussen identifies possible links between the murders of Valerie Percy on September 18, 1966, in Kenilworth, Illinois and the Richard Robison Family in Good Hart, Michigan, June, 1968. Rasmussen presents compelling evidence that may connect the Zodiac Killer to these murders. In this book Rasmussen continues the investigation by comparing the Zodiac Killer and Charles F. Albright, a convicted serial killer currently incarcerated in Amarillo, Texas, known as the ''Eyeball Killer.'' Albright was a neighbor of Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963, when Oswald rented a room from Gladys Johnson at 1026 North Beckley Avenue, in Oak Cliff, Texas. The author questions whether Albright knew Oswald in 1963, before Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby. The fascinating and highly documented information contained in this new illustrated book could well be a significant development in the Zodiac case as well as the Torso Murders of the 1930s.
